Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book: The idiosyncratic genius of Padgett Powell shines through in nine stories that bend the conventions of short fiction. Padgett Powell's literary stage is a blurred vision of the American South. His characters are bored, sad, assured, confused, deluded, and often just one step away from madness. The stories they populate are madder still, delivered by a voice enthralling and distinctive. Whether he's chronicling a housewife's encouragement of adolescent lust, following two good ol' boys on their search for a Chinese healer, or delving into the mind of an unstable moped accident survivor as he awaits a hefty settlement check, Powell revels in the irregularities of the mundane. His people occupy bar stools and strip clubs, pickup truck cabs and mental health clinics, looking for love, drugs, answers. According to the New York Times Book Review, "Mr. Powell is like a fabulous guest at a dinner party, the guy who gets people drinking far too much and licking their dessert plates and laughing at jokes--for which not a few of them will hate themselves in the morning."

Humanity does what it always does. We exploit them. Until, that is, the Wergens find a way to circumvent their addiction... From the towering skyscrapers of Earth to the methane lakes of Titan, from the ice-plains of Pluto to distant alien gas giants with steel-crushing gravity, Wergen: The Alien Love War explores personal stories of unrequited love set against the cosmic backdrop of the conflict between the two species. Mercurio D. Rivera's Wergen stories have wowed readers and critics alike. Now, for the first time, the full arc of the human/Wergen relations is revealed: the conflict, cooperation, love, betrayal, and more. "Mindblowing hard science fiction" - N.K. Jemisin, Hugo Award Winning Author "Rivera gradually introduces a surprising level of ambivalence and complexity. What initially seems benevolent becomes quite the opposite, before evolving again. There are twists followed by more twists, heightening a powerful sense of alienation and menace. The conceptual and ethical switchbacks... are dizzying." - Tor.com "Fascinating and satisfying... exploring the nature of love. Is love something deeply spiritual or simply the result of chemical reactions in the brain?" - The Fix "The mystery of love's origins and endings are universal for humans and aliens alike, something that transcends mere biochemistry." - Tangent Online "Rivera has shown great invention here and written something that will touch you deeply." - SF Revu

Book excerpt: This writing is not meant to replace any legitimate doctors care, and you are free to share this information with any professional that you feel has not been so energetically affected by alien spirit to where their judgment would be too compromised to benefit you. Surely a doctor can find even more possibilities other than what I have found helpful to work with consistency in this writing; otherwise, this writing could prove to be a beneficial supplemental aid to the unusual energetic alien operations happening among us and hopefully help bring more of a balanced (or removal to any imbalanced) energy trying to engage you with the ability to ritually cause sickness and/or disease.

  • Publisher : The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press
  • Release : 2007-06-15
  • ISBN : 9882378773

Download or read book The Question of the Other written by Bernhard Waldenfels and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from a series of lectures that Bernhard Waldenfels delivered in honour of the Chinese philosopher Tang Chun-I, The Question of the Other is a collection of seven papers introducing what he calls a new sort of responsive phenomenology. This means that our experience does not start from our own intentions or from our common understanding, but from something that happens and appeals to us, disturbing our projects and forcing us to respond. We only become ourselves by responding to the Other. Hence otherness is not restricted to the otherness of the Other or to that of another order, it rather penetrates ourselves. Bernhard Waldenfels, born in 1934, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Munich in 1959. He taught at Munich until 1976 when he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum. Since 1999 he is Professor Emeritus. He has been a visiting professor in Rotterdam, Paris, New York, Louvain-la Neuve, Costa Rica, Debrecen, Prague, Rome, Vienna, and Hong Kong. He is a cofounder of the German Society for Phenomenological Research. The tremendous success of China's economic reform, in contrast with the vast difficulties encountered by the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries in their transition, has attracted worldwide attention. Using a historical, comparative and analytic approach grounded in mainstream economics, the authors develop a consistent and rational framework of state-owned enterprises and individual agents to analyze the internal logic of the traditional planning system. They also explain why the Chinese economy grew slowly before the market-oriented reform in 1979 but became one of the fastest growing economies afterwards, and why the vigour/chaos cycle became part of China's reform process. The book also addresses to the questions that whether China can continue its trend of reform and development and become the largest economy in the world in the early 21st century, and what the general implications of China's experience of development and reform are for other developing and transition economies. The first edition has been well-received and is the standard textbook or reference for students and researchers of China studies. In this thoroughly revised edition, the authors have updated the data and information in the book and include a new chapter on the impact of China's WTO accession on its economic reforms and causes of the current deflation. 5

Book Game Love

  • Author : Jessica Enevold
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2015-01-09
  • ISBN : 147661878X
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Game Love written by Jessica Enevold and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does love have to do with gaming? As games have grown in complexity, they have increasingly included narratives that seek to engage players with love in a variety of ways. While media attention often focuses on violent emotions and behavior in gaming, love has always been central to the experience. We love to play games, we have titles that we love, and sometimes we love too much or love terrible games for their shortcomings. Love in gaming is rather like love in life--often complicated and frustrating but also exciting and gratifying. This collection of fresh essays explores the meaning and role of love in gaming, describing a number of ways--from coding to cosplay--in which love can be expressed in, for and around games. Investigating how gaming involves love is also key to understanding the growing importance of games and gamers as cultural markers.
