Download or read book Vector and Geometric Calculus written by Alan Macdonald and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook for the undergraduate vector calculus course presents a unified treatment of vector and geometric calculus. This is the printing of August 2022. The book is a sequel to the text Linear and Geometric Algebra by the same author. That text is a prerequisite for this one. Its web page is at faculty.luther.edu/ macdonal/laga. Linear algebra and vector calculus have provided the basic vocabulary of mathematics in dimensions greater than one for the past one hundred years. Just as geometric algebra generalizes linear algebra in powerful ways, geometric calculus generalizes vector calculus in powerful ways. Traditional vector calculus topics are covered, as they must be, since readers will encounter them in other texts and out in the world. Differential geometry is used today in many disciplines. A final chapter is devoted to it. Download the book's table of contents, preface, and index at the book's web site: faculty.luther.edu/ macdonal/vagc. From a review of Linear and Geometric Algebra: Alan Macdonald's text is an excellent resource if you are just beginning the study of geometric algebra and would like to learn or review traditional linear algebra in the process. The clarity and evenness of the writing, as well as the originality of presentation that is evident throughout this text, suggest that the author has been successful as a mathematics teacher in the undergraduate classroom. This carefully crafted text is ideal for anyone learning geometric algebra in relative isolation, which I suspect will be the case for many readers. -- Jeffrey Dunham, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Natural Sciences, Middlebury College

Book excerpt: Reflecting the significant contributions of Russian mathematicians to the field, this book contains a selection of papers on tensor and vector analysis. It is divided into three parts, covering Hamiltonian systems, Riemannian geometry and calculus of variations, and topology. The range of applications of these topics is very broad, as many modern geometrical problems recur across a wide range of fields, including mechanics and physics as well as mathematics. Many of the approaches to problems presented in this volume will be novel to the Western reader, although questions are of global interest. The main achievements of the Russian school are placed in the context of the development of each individual subject.

Book Clifford Algebra to Geometric Calculus

Download or read book Clifford Algebra to Geometric Calculus written by David Hestenes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix algebra has been called "the arithmetic of higher mathematics" [Be]. We think the basis for a better arithmetic has long been available, but its versatility has hardly been appreciated, and it has not yet been integrated into the mainstream of mathematics. We refer to the system commonly called 'Clifford Algebra', though we prefer the name 'Geometric Algebra' suggested by Clifford himself. Many distinct algebraic systems have been adapted or developed to express geometric relations and describe geometric structures. Especially notable are those algebras which have been used for this purpose in physics, in particular, the system of complex numbers, the quaternions, matrix algebra, vector, tensor and spinor algebras and the algebra of differential forms. Each of these geometric algebras has some significant advantage over the others in certain applications, so no one of them provides an adequate algebraic structure for all purposes of geometry and physics. At the same time, the algebras overlap considerably, so they provide several different mathematical representations for individual geometrical or physical ideas.

Book Vector Analysis for Computer Graphics

Download or read book Vector Analysis for Computer Graphics written by John Vince and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete introduction to vector analysis, especially within the context of computer graphics. The author shows why vectors are useful and how it is possible to develop analytical skills in manipulating vector algebra. Even though vector analysis is a relatively recent development in the history of mathematics, it has become a powerful and central tool in describing and solving a wide range of geometric problems. The book is divided into eleven chapters covering the mathematical foundations of vector algebra and its application to, among others, lines, planes, intersections, rotating vectors, and vector differentiation.

Book Problems and Worked Solutions in Vector Analysis

Download or read book Problems and Worked Solutions in Vector Analysis written by L.R. Shorter and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A handy book like this," noted The Mathematical Gazette, "will fill a great want." Devoted to fully worked out examples, this unique text constitutes a self-contained introductory course in vector analysis for undergraduate and graduate students of applied mathematics. Opening chapters define vector addition and subtraction, show how to resolve and determine the direction of two or more vectors, and explain systems of coordinates, vector equations of a plane and straight line, relative velocity and acceleration, and infinitely small vectors. The following chapters deal with scalar and vector multiplication, axial and polar vectors, areas, differentiation of vector functions, gradient, curl, divergence, and analytical properties of the position vector. Applications of vector analysis to dynamics and physics are the focus of the final chapter, including such topics as moving rigid bodies, energy of a moving rigid system, central forces, equipotential surfaces, Gauss's theorem, and vector flow. Book excerpt: This concise introduction to the methods and techniques of vector analysis is suitable for college undergraduates in mathematics as well as students of physics and engineering. Rich in exercises and examples, the straightforward presentation focuses on physical ideas rather than mathematical rigor. The treatment begins with a chapter on vectors and vector addition, followed by a chapter on products of vector. Two succeeding chapters on vector calculus cover a variety of topics, including functions of a vector; line, surface, and volume integrals; the Laplacian operator, and more. The text concludes with a survey of standard applications, including Poinsot's central axis, Gauss's theorem, gravitational potential, Green's theorems, and other subjects.

Book Vector Analysis Versus Vector Calculus

Download or read book Vector Analysis Versus Vector Calculus written by Antonio Galbis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to facilitate the use of Stokes' Theorem in applications. The text takes a differential geometric point of view and provides for the student a bridge between pure and applied mathematics by carefully building a formal rigorous development of the topic and following this through to concrete applications in two and three variables. Key topics include vectors and vector fields, line integrals, regular k-surfaces, flux of a vector field, orientation of a surface, differential forms, Stokes' theorem, and divergence theorem. This book is intended for upper undergraduate students who have completed a standard introduction to differential and integral calculus for functions of several variables. The book can also be useful to engineering and physics students who know how to handle the theorems of Green, Stokes and Gauss, but would like to explore the topic further.
