Book A Polynomial Approach to Linear Algebra

Download or read book A Polynomial Approach to Linear Algebra written by Paul A. Fuhrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Polynomial Approach to Linear Algebra is a text which is heavily biased towards functional methods. In using the shift operator as a central object, it makes linear algebra a perfect introduction to other areas of mathematics, operator theory in particular. This technique is very powerful as becomes clear from the analysis of canonical forms (Frobenius, Jordan). It should be emphasized that these functional methods are not only of great theoretical interest, but lead to computational algorithms. Quadratic forms are treated from the same perspective, with emphasis on the important examples of Bezoutian and Hankel forms. These topics are of great importance in applied areas such as signal processing, numerical linear algebra, and control theory. Stability theory and system theoretic concepts, up to realization theory, are treated as an integral part of linear algebra. Finally there is a chapter on Hankel norm approximation for the case of scalar rational functions which allows the reader to access ideas and results on the frontier of current research.

Book Computer Algebra and Polynomials

Download or read book Computer Algebra and Polynomials written by Jaime Gutierrez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra and number theory have always been counted among the most beautiful mathematical areas with deep proofs and elegant results. However, for a long time they were not considered that important in view of the lack of real-life applications. This has dramatically changed: nowadays we find applications of algebra and number theory frequently in our daily life. This book focuses on the theory and algorithms for polynomials over various coefficient domains such as a finite field or ring. The operations on polynomials in the focus are factorization, composition and decomposition, basis computation for modules, etc. Algorithms for such operations on polynomials have always been a central interest in computer algebra, as it combines formal (the variables) and algebraic or numeric (the coefficients) aspects. The papers presented were selected from the Workshop on Computer Algebra and Polynomials, which was held in Linz at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) during November 25-29, 2013, at the occasion of the Special Semester on Applications of Algebra and Number Theory.

Book Integers Polynomials and Rings

Download or read book Integers Polynomials and Rings written by Ronald S. Irving and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began life as a set of notes that I developed for a course at the University of Washington entitled Introduction to Modern Algebra for Tea- ers. Originally conceived as a text for future secondary-school mathematics teachers, it has developed into a book that could serve well as a text in an - dergraduatecourseinabstractalgebraoracoursedesignedasanintroduction to higher mathematics. This book di?ers from many undergraduate algebra texts in fundamental ways; the reasons lie in the book’s origin and the goals I set for the course. The course is a two-quarter sequence required of students intending to f- ?ll the requirements of the teacher preparation option for our B.A. degree in mathematics, or of the teacher preparation minor. It is required as well of those intending to matriculate in our university’s Master’s in Teaching p- gram for secondary mathematics teachers. This is the principal course they take involving abstraction and proof, and they come to it with perhaps as little background as a year of calculus and a quarter of linear algebra. The mathematical ability of the students varies widely, as does their level of ma- ematical interest.

Book Polynomial Algorithms in Computer Algebra

Download or read book Polynomial Algorithms in Computer Algebra written by Franz Winkler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years now I have been teaching courses in computer algebra at the Universitat Linz, the University of Delaware, and the Universidad de Alcala de Henares. In the summers of 1990 and 1992 I have organized and taught summer schools in computer algebra at the Universitat Linz. Gradually a set of course notes has emerged from these activities. People have asked me for copies of the course notes, and different versions of them have been circulating for a few years. Finally I decided that I should really take the time to write the material up in a coherent way and make a book out of it. Here, now, is the result of this work. Over the years many students have been helpful in improving the quality of the notes, and also several colleagues at Linz and elsewhere have contributed to it. I want to thank them all for their effort, in particular I want to thank B. Buchberger, who taught me the theory of Grabner bases nearly two decades ago, B. F. Caviness and B. D. Saunders, who first stimulated my interest in various problems in computer algebra, G. E. Collins, who showed me how to compute in algebraic domains, and J. R. Sendra, with whom I started to apply computer algebra methods to problems in algebraic geometry. Several colleagues have suggested improvements in earlier versions of this book. However, I want to make it clear that I am responsible for all remaining mistakes.

Book Polynomials and Polynomial Inequalities

Download or read book Polynomials and Polynomial Inequalities written by Peter Borwein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an introduction to the geometry of polynomials and a discussion of refinements of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, the book turns to a consideration of various special polynomials. Chebyshev and Descartes systems are then introduced, and Müntz systems and rational systems are examined in detail. Subsequent chapters discuss denseness questions and the inequalities satisfied by polynomials and rational functions. Appendices on algorithms and computational concerns, on the interpolation theorem, and on orthogonality and irrationality round off the text. The book is self-contained and assumes at most a senior-undergraduate familiarity with real and complex analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book extends the high school curriculum and provides a backdrop for later study in calculus, modern algebra, numerical analysis, and complex variable theory. Exercises introduce many techniques and topics in the theory of equations, such as evolution and factorization of polynomials, solution of equations, interpolation, approximation, and congruences. The theory is not treated formally, but rather illustrated through examples. Over 300 problems drawn from journals, contests, and examinations test understanding, ingenuity, and skill. Each chapter ends with a list of hints; there are answers to many of the exercises and solutions to all of the problems. In addition, 69 "explorations" invite the reader to investigate research problems and related topics.

It is addressed to researchers in the field.

Book Numerical Polynomial Algebra

Download or read book Numerical Polynomial Algebra written by Hans J. Stetter and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many important areas of scientific computing, polynomials in one or more variables are employed in the mathematical modeling of real-life phenomena; yet most of classical computer algebra assumes exact rational data. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of the emerging area of numerical polynomial algebra, an area that falls between classical numerical analysis and classical computer algebra but, surprisingly, has received little attention so far. The author introduces a conceptual framework that permits the meaningful solution of various algebraic problems with multivariate polynomial equations whose coefficients have some indeterminacy; for this purpose, he combines approaches of both numerical linear algebra and commutative algebra. For the application scientist, Numerical Polynomial Algebra provides both a survey of polynomial problems in scientific computing that may be solved numerically and a guide to their numerical treatment. In addition, the book provides both introductory sections and novel extensions of numerical analysis and computer algebra, making it accessible to the reader with expertise in either one of these areas.

Book Positive Polynomials and Sums of Squares

Download or read book Positive Polynomials and Sums of Squares written by Murray Marshall and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of positive polynomials brings together algebra, geometry and analysis. The subject is of fundamental importance in real algebraic geometry when studying the properties of objects defined by polynomial inequalities. Hilbert's 17th problem and its solution in the first half of the 20th century were landmarks in the early days of the subject. More recently, new connections to the moment problem and to polynomial optimization have been discovered. The moment problem relates linear maps on the multidimensional polynomial ring to positive Borel measures. This book provides an elementary introduction to positive polynomials and sums of squares, the relationship to the moment problem, and the application to polynomial optimization. The focus is on the exciting new developments that have taken place in the last 15 years, arising out of Schmudgen's solution to the moment problem in the compact case in 1991. The book is accessible to a well-motivated student at the beginning graduate level. The objects being dealt with are concrete and down-to-earth, namely polynomials in $n$ variables with real coefficients, and many examples are included. Proofs are presented as clearly and as simply as possible. Various new, simpler proofs appear in the book for the first time. Abstraction is employed only when it serves a useful purpose, but, at the same time, enough abstraction is included to allow the reader easy access to the literature. The book should be essential reading for any beginning student in the area.
