Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book provides a new and well-motivated introduction to calculus and analysis, historically significant fundamental areas of mathematics that are widely used in many disciplines. It begins with familiar elementary high school geometry and algebra, and develops important concepts such as tangents and derivatives without using any advanced tools based on limits and infinite processes that dominate the traditional introductions to the subject. This simple algebraic method is a modern version of an idea that goes back to René Descartes and that has been largely forgotten. Moving beyond algebra, the need for new analytic concepts based on completeness, continuity, and limits becomes clearly visible to the reader while investigating exponential functions. The author carefully develops the necessary foundations while minimizing the use of technical language. He expertly guides the reader to deep fundamental analysis results, including completeness, key differential equations, definite integrals, Taylor series for standard functions, and the Euler identity. This pioneering book takes the sophisticated reader from simple familiar algebra to the heart of analysis. Furthermore, it should be of interest as a source of new ideas and as supplementary reading for high school teachers, and for students and instructors of calculus and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the traditional purposes of such an introductory course is the training of a student in the conventions of pure mathematics: acquiring a feeling for what is considered a proof, and supplying literate written arguments to support mathematical propositions. To this extent, more than one proof is included for a theorem - where this is considered beneficial - so as to stimulate the students' reasoning for alternate approaches and ideas. The second half of this book, and consequently the second semester, covers differentiation and integration, as well as the connection between these concepts, as displayed in the general theorem of Stokes. Also included are some beautiful applications of this theory, such as Brouwer's fixed point theorem, and the Dirichlet principle for harmonic functions. Throughout, reference is made to earlier sections, so as to reinforce the main ideas by repetition. Unique in its applications to some topics not usually covered at this level.

Book Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell Geometry Algebra Trigonometry

Download or read book Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell Geometry Algebra Trigonometry written by George F. Simmons and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒGeometry is a very beautiful subject whose qualities of elegance, order, and certainty have exerted a powerful attraction on the human mind for many centuries. . . Algebra's importance lies in the student's future. . . as essential preparation for the serious study of science, engineering, economics, or for more advanced types of mathematics. . . The primary importance of trigonometry is not in its applications to surveying and navigation, or in making computations about triangles, but rather in the mathematical description of vibrations, rotations, and periodic phenomena of all kinds, including light, sound, alternating currents, and the orbits of the planets around the sun.Ó In this brief, clearly written book, the essentials of geometry, algebra, and trigonometry are pulled together into three complementary and convenient small packages, providing an excellent preview and review for anyone who wishes to prepare to master calculus with a minimum of misunderstanding and wasted time and effort. Students and other readers will find here all they need to pull them through.

Book An Introduction to Analysis

Download or read book An Introduction to Analysis written by Arlen Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its title indicates, this book is intended to serve as a textbook for an introductory course in mathematical analysis. In preliminary form the book has been used in this way at the University of Michigan, Indiana University, and Texas A&M University, and has proved serviceable. In addition to its primary purpose as a textbook for a formal course, however, it is the authors' hope that this book will also prove of value to readers interested in studying mathematical analysis on their own. Indeed, we believe the wealth and variety of examples and exercises will be especially conducive to this end. A word on prerequisites. With what mathematical background might a prospective reader hope to profit from the study of this book? Our con scious intent in writing it was to address the needs of a beginning graduate student in mathematics, or, to put matters slightly differently, a student who has completed an undergraduate program with a mathematics ma jor. On the other hand, the book is very largely self-contained and should therefore be accessible to a lower classman whose interest in mathematical analysis has already been awakened.

Download or read book Calculus written by William Bauldry and published by Addison Wesley Publishing Company. This book was released on 1999 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first generation of calculus reformers exploited emerging technologies and the theme of multiple representations of functions. These pioneers also demonstrated effective, innovative teaching techniques, including collaborative learning, writing, discovery, and extended problem solving. Calculus: Mathematics and Modeling introduces a second generation of calculus reform, combining the lessons of the first generation with advances in differential equations through the use of discrete dynamical systems. This teaching philosophy requires a computational environment in which students can move smoothly between symbolic, numeric, graphic, and textual contexts. The text requires use of a computer algebra-capable graphing calculator.

Book Mathematical Analysis I

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis I written by Claudio Canuto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-08 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the volume is to provide a support for a first course in Mathematics. The contents are organised to appeal especially to Engineering, Physics and Computer Science students, all areas in which mathematical tools play a crucial role. Basic notions and methods of differential and integral calculus for functions of one real variable are presented in a manner that elicits critical reading and prompts a hands-on approach to concrete applications. The layout has a specifically-designed modular nature, allowing the instructor to make flexible didactical choices when planning an introductory lecture course. The book may in fact be employed at three levels of depth. At the elementary level the student is supposed to grasp the very essential ideas and familiarise with the corresponding key techniques. Proofs to the main results befit the intermediate level, together with several remarks and complementary notes enhancing the treatise. The last, and farthest-reaching, level requires the additional study of the material contained in the appendices, which enable the strongly motivated reader to explore further into the subject. Definitions and properties are furnished with substantial examples to stimulate the learning process. Over 350 solved exercises complete the text, at least half of which guide the reader to the solution. This new edition features additional material with the aim of matching the widest range of educational choices for a first course of Mathematics.

Download or read book Real Mathematical Analysis written by Charles Chapman Pugh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was plane geometry your favourite math course in high school? Did you like proving theorems? Are you sick of memorising integrals? If so, real analysis could be your cup of tea. In contrast to calculus and elementary algebra, it involves neither formula manipulation nor applications to other fields of science. None. It is Pure Mathematics, and it is sure to appeal to the budding pure mathematician. In this new introduction to undergraduate real analysis the author takes a different approach from past studies of the subject, by stressing the importance of pictures in mathematics and hard problems. The exposition is informal and relaxed, with many helpful asides, examples and occasional comments from mathematicians like Dieudonne, Littlewood and Osserman. The author has taught the subject many times over the last 35 years at Berkeley and this book is based on the honours version of this course. The book contains an excellent selection of more than 500 exercises.

Download or read book Understanding Analysis written by Stephen Abbott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elementary presentation exposes readers to both the process of rigor and the rewards inherent in taking an axiomatic approach to the study of functions of a real variable. The aim is to challenge and improve mathematical intuition rather than to verify it. The philosophy of this book is to focus attention on questions which give analysis its inherent fascination. Each chapter begins with the discussion of some motivating examples and concludes with a series of questions.

Book Elementary Functions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrei Bourchtein
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-05-31

Download or read book Elementary Functions written by Andrei Bourchtein and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the study of different kinds of elementary functions ubiquitous both in high school Algebra and Calculus. To analyze the functions ranging from polynomial to trigonometric ones, it uses rudimentary techniques available to high school students, and at the same time follows the mathematical rigor appropriate for university level courses. Contrary to other books of Pre-Calculus, this textbook emphasizes the study of elementary functions with rigor appropriate for university level courses in mathematics, although the exposition is confined to the pre-limit topics and techniques. This makes the book useful, on the one hand, as an introduction to mathematical reasoning and methods of proofs in mathematical analysis, and on the other hand, as a preparatory course on the properties of different kinds of elementary functions. The textbook is aimed at university freshmen and high-school students interested in learning strict mathematical reasoning and in preparing a solid base for subsequent study of elementary functions at advanced level of Calculus and Analysis. The required prerequisites correspond to the level of the high school Algebra. All the preliminary concepts and results related to the elementary functions are covered in the initial part of the text. This makes the textbook suitable for both classroom use and self-study.

Book Advanced Calculus

  • Author : Lynn Harold Loomis

  • ISBN : 9814583952

Download or read book Advanced Calculus written by Lynn Harold Loomis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.
