Download or read book Tallahassee FL Travel Guide The Capital of Florida A Journey Through USA eBook written by Baktash Vafaei and published by StateGuides. This book was released on with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tallahassee is the capital of the U.S. state of Florida and is located in the north of the state, near the border with Georgia. The city has a population of about 200,000 people and is known for its rich history, beautiful parks, and vibrant arts scene. Tallahassee has a long and interesting history dating back to pre-Columbian times when it was settled by various Native American tribes. The city was founded in 1824 and quickly became an important commercial center in Florida. During the American Civil War, Tallahassee was an important supply point for the Confederate Army and was besieged twice by Union troops, but was successfully defended. In the decades following the Civil War, Tallahassee experienced growth, especially after Florida was named the railroad capital of the South in 1905. The city also became an important educational location when Florida State University and Florida A&M University were founded. During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s, Tallahassee played an important role, as it was one of the first cities in Florida to end racial segregation in public institutions. Today, Tallahassee is a thriving city with a rich history that is honored in various museums and monuments throughout the area. Visitors can visit the Museum of Florida History to learn about the state's history, or visit the Tallahassee Historic District to see restored 19th-century buildings. Tallahassee also hosts regular events and festivals, including the Tallahassee Film Festival, Springtime Tallahassee Festival, and the Southern Shakespeare Festival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many have dreamed of seeing Florida at a slower pace than through the windshield of a car whizzing along the interstate, and yet few have done so. Road Biking Florida provides an exquisite tour of the Sunshine State, offering bike routes for every taste and moment. Each ride—whether along highways or quiet rural lanes, from short 25-mile rambles to 100-mile classics—has been ridden and reviewed personally by local author Rick Sapp. He highlights not only the unique features of the road but also the people, the ecology, and the history of the areas covered. The author’s passion truly brings alive those halcyon rides under hammocks of oak draped with Spanish moss, past whitetail deer munching on acorns, along stretches of white sand beaches, and through wide expanses of the Everglades and swamp.
