The work, well structured and composed of original research, shows through a didactic approach the current lines of work in which the construction sector in Spain is developing. Nowadays, nobody doubts that we are immersed in a process of change and technological innovation that fully affects the industry, and the construction sector is no stranger to it. Advances in technology and its application to everyday life, the excessive consumption of natural resources and the need to apply circular economy strategies, or the development of new sustainable construction materials, are some of the issues addressed in this book. Thus, in line with European guidelines and the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda, the European Union has established a roadmap that promotes responsible economic growth. It is for this reason that it is essential to address new ways of conceiving building in our country, and for this reason, it has been essential to have various collaborators from renowned Universities and Research Centres that have wanted to be part of this work. Undoubtedly, all the original research presented here deals with the process of innovation in building and is linked to the common paradigm of sustainability. However, despite the complexity of some of the topics covered in this compendium, the authors have tried to unify the criteria of academic rigour and agile and accessible presentation. For this reason, it is understood that this book is suitable both for doctoral students and researchers, as well as for people interested in popularising science with a basic training. This is perhaps the strong point of this work, which has been polished as a result of the criticisms received from all those colleagues who have been kind enough to read the final document and help to improve it. We would also like to thank all the authors who have responded to our call and have kindly contributed their excellent research to the creation of this book. The works that make up the different Chapters have been selected through a blind peer review process and are the result of the wide-ranging concerns and issues that are of concern to building professionals in the year 2024. Last but not least, we would like to thank the Department of Building Technology and especially its Director, Mr. Carlos Morón Fernández, for giving us the opportunity to carry out this initiative by providing us with the necessary means. Se reúnen los conocimientos especializados del personal del Banco Mundial y el aporte de numerosos especialistas para sintetizar buenas prácticas y recomendaciones basadas en experiencia global que no responden a intereses comerciales, financieros ni políticos, entre otros. El material presentado tiene como objetivo servir de guía imparcial para maximizar el impacto y afrontar los desafíos que conllevan los sistemas ferroviarios urbanos en las ciudades de países desarrollados y en desarrollo. Book excerpt: This book presents several complex case studies related to water management and planning in the context of pollution, growing demands, and global climate change in Mexico, but which are also relevant for other countries in Latin America. These concerns are of critical importance for policymakers who are coping with multiple conflicting interests. Water availability in Mexico is polarized, with abundant rainfall and large rivers in the south, and desert-like conditions in the north. The central region, which is the most industrialized, is overpopulated. Mexico City pours millions of cubic meters of “blackwater” into the northern valley daily and receives its clean water from the south. To address these unsustainable conditions, the world's 4th biggest water treatment plant went into operation in 2018. The water infrastructure and governance must satisfy the demands of all sectors, including agricultural, urban, and economic activities. At the same time, water resources are affected by drought, and climate change puts constraints on the supply. As such, regulation and monitoring are important when it comes to adherence to agreed plans and priorities. The book is divided into four sections. 1: Water Availability discusses quantitative aspects, such as supply, methods of calculation, and fracking. 2: Water Quality highlights pollution risks and diagnosis of water resources. 3: Water Allocation examines the sectoral demands and vulnerability due to unsustainable irrigation. 4: Water Governance and Management focuses on laws, urban rules, national parks, planning, and integrated water resources management, among other topics. The chapters include illustrative case studies in Mexico, such as basins, cities, reservoirs, and aquifers, water supply demand assessment, planning, and management.

Book excerpt: The protection of water resources from deterioration in quality by pollution discharges is probably the biggest challenge in sustainable water resources management in the recent decades. In practice, most countries have adopted pollution control strategies and measures which are based on ‘end-of-pipe’ solutions: wastewater treatment plants and adjustments to the regulations, including taxes for wastewater discharges (Conventional Strategy). Although this approach involves very high costs, on many occasions, this strategy has been a complete failure. The research described in this book contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for the previously outlined problem. It was based on the validation of the Three-Step Strategic Approach concept (3-SSA), which includes: 1) prevention or minimisation of waste production; 2) treatment aimed at recovery and reuse of waste components, and 3) disposal of remaining waste with stimulation of natural self-purification of the receiving water body. The study showed overall positive effects of the 3-SSA, in comparison of Conventional Strategy, on wastewater management in the Upper Basin (389 km) of the Cauca river, the second most important river in Colombia. The Cost Benefit Analysis clearly favoured the 3-SSA, generating a major impact on the river water quality at lower cost compared to the Conventional Strategy.

Book excerpt: There is an urgent need to develop and improve low cost technologies for wastewater treatment. Simultaneously treating wastewater and producing duckweed in a pond system is, therefore, an attractive solution contributing to both environmental protection and food production. Duckweed has excellent qualities: a high protein content, a high growth rate and is an easy crop to handle. The small plant turns nitrogen from wastewater into a food source. This thesis reports on the effect of different operational variables, like anaerobic pre-treatment, the combination of algae and duckweed ponds and pond depth. Improved nitrogen removal was obtained through the combination of duckweed ponds with algae ponds. Duckweed pond systems could be designed with shallow depth without affecting nitrogen removal efficiency. This research is the result of the cooperative effort between the EIDENAR, Univalle, Cali, Colombia and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands.
