Download or read book Eric J Hanson s Financial History of Alberta 1905 1950 written by Eric John Hanson and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Hanson Albertas first, and arguably greatest, economist wrote a number of influential books on federal-provincial relations, education finance, health care finance, and energy economics. His doctoral thesis was entitled A Financial History of Alberta, 1905-1950 and was found by Paul Boothe at the University of Alberta library while Boothe was doing research on Alberta government spending almost forty-five years after it was written. This "forgotten gem" sheds light on the institutional, economic, and public development of the province from a financial perspective. With a detailed and analytical introduction, this edited work provides historical perspective on the perennial problems facing Alberta's fiscal managers: wildly fluctuating revenues, in-migration, seemingly insatiable demands for infrastructure, high-quality public services, and resistance to taxes while exuding an optimistic attitude for the future.

Download or read book Politics and Public Debt written by Robert Ascah and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 1999-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the window of history, Politics and Public Debt examines the influence of debt-holders over fiscal and economic policy-making by Canadian governments. Robert Ascah focuses on debt management issues faced by the Canadian government between 1930 and 1952, a time shaped by stresses of depression, war, and reconstruction. He takes special note of Alberta's historic default of 1936, an event as little known as it was defining for both the province's finances and the country's. In Politics and Public Debt, economists, political scientists, bankers, investors, historians, and students interested in Canadian politics, government and the future of public finance will find valuable background and perspective on a subject that affects us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, Alberta municipalities have endured hardships they have not faced since the Great Depression. Download or read book Agrarian Revolt in W Canada written by Sharp and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1948 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark study meticulously traces the evolution of the farmers' movement on the prairies, which led to the birth of the co-operative movement and such populist political movements as the Progressive Party, the Social Credit, and the CCF/NDP. Out of print for almost 30 years, "The Agrarian Revolt" has remained a primary resource for scholars studying the history of this region. The trends which Sharp identified and examined continue to be crucial for an understanding of prairie politics today, for the Reform Party (now the Canadian Alliance Party) is a direct ideological descendant of the earlier populist movements considered in "The Agrarian Revolt."
Download or read book Rethinking Canadian Economic Growth and Development since 1900 written by Vincent Geloso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book upturns many established ideas regarding the economic and social history of Quebec, the Canadian province that is home to the majority of its French population. It places the case of Quebec into the wider question of convergence in economic history and whether proactive governments delay or halt convergence. The period from 1945 to 1960, infamously labelled the Great Gloom (Grande Noirceur), was in fact a breaking point where the previous decades of relative decline were overturned – Geloso argues that this era should be considered the Great Convergence (Grand Rattrapage). In opposition, the Quiet Revolution that followed after 1960 did not accelerate these trends. In fact, there are signs of slowing down and relative decline that appear after the 1970s. The author posits that the Quiet Revolution sowed the seeds for a growth slowdown by crowding-out social capital and inciting rent-seeking behaviour on the part of interest groups.
Download or read book Fighting from Home written by Serge Durflinger and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Verdun, English and French speakers lived side by side. Through their home-front activities as much as through enlistment, they proved themselves partners in the prosecution of Canada's war. Shared experiences and class similarities shaped responses based first and foremost in a sense of local identity. Fighting from Home paints a comprehensive, at times intimate, portrait of Verdun and Verdunites at war. Durflinger offers an innovative interpretive approach to wartime Canadian and Quebec social and cultural dynamics in this history of the Canadian home front during the Second World War.
