Book The Art and Politics of Asger Jorn

Download or read book The Art and Politics of Asger Jorn written by Karen Kurczynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading figure of the postwar avant-garde, Danish artist Asger Jorn has long been recognized for his founding contributions to the Cobra and Situationist International movements - yet art historical scholarship on Jorn has been sparse, particularly in English. This study corrects that imbalance, offering a synthetic account of the essential phases of this prolific artists career. It addresses his works in various media alongside his extensive writings and his collaborations with various artists' groups from the 1940s through the mid-1960s. Situating Jorn's work in an international, post-Second World War context, Karen Kurczynski reframes our understanding of the 1950s, away from the Abstract-Expressionist focus on individual expression, toward a more open-ended conception of art as a public engagement with contemporary culture and politics. Kurczynski engages with issues of interest to twenty-first-century artists and scholars, highlighting Jorn's proposition that the sensory address of art and its complex relationship to popular media can have a direct social impact. Perhaps most significantly, this study foregrounds Jorn's assertion that creativity is crucial to subjectivity itself in our increasingly mediated 'Society of the Spectacle.'

Book Albert Oehlen Big Paintings by Me with Small Paintings by Others

Download or read book Albert Oehlen Big Paintings by Me with Small Paintings by Others written by Francesca Benini and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist as collector: Albert Oehlen's own artworks nail-to-nail with masterpieces from his personal collection.00The dual role of artist-collector is always an exciting coupling, and when the artist-collector is as elusive and discreet as Albert Oehlen, it is downright seductive. Albert Oehlen "big paintings by me with small paintings by others"?published on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition at the MASI Lugano in 2021?witnesses Oehlen as an exhibited artist, a curator, and a collector. For the first time in such an extensive form, many of his own artworks are nail-to-nail with masterpieces from his collection. He devised a precise exhibition path in close collaboration with Francesca Benini and Christian Dominguez, and the catalogue reflects this precious dialogue. The connections between Oehlen's and the artists in his collection speak for themselves; readers will readily spot the many and various alignments in terms of their ideas about art and the big questions they seek to answer.00Exhibition: MASILugano, Switzerland (05.09.2021 - 20.02.2022).

  • Pages : 102 pages

Book excerpt: Meese's work includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and performances but also extends to writing, stage design, and directing within the field of theatre and opera. His practice addresses certain uneasy aspects of German political history and seeks to adopt ideological symbols and empty them of meaning. The subjects of his work have included Richard Wagner's three act opera Parsifal, and more recently, the American actor, John Wayne. Wayne's portrayals of unconquerable cowboys in over 80 Westerns, serve as the inspiration for a new suite of drawings entitled ERZMARSHALL. Newly conceived for the exhibition is an immersive installation that occupies an entire room. Combining painting, drawing, and sculpture, the work provides an environment in which the viewer can bear witness to Meese's wide-ranging imagination. Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Jonathan Meese: DR. TRANS-FORM-ERZ at David Nolan Gallery, New York, 27 October - 17 December 2016.

Book Albert Oehlen

  • ISBN : 9781905464142
  • Pages : 4 pages

Download or read book Albert Oehlen written by Albert Oehlen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing Albert Oehlen's interest in posters, this volume contains loose, unbound images of ten paintings contained within a large fold-out poster set designed by the artist. Closely associated with the Cologne art scene and the Neue Wilde movement, Oehlen was also formally a member of the Lord Jim Lodge along with Martin Kippenberger, among others. The artist's latest series of paintings vividly merge image, text and symbol in an explosive form that Oehlen has called 'free collage'. Combining oil, inkjet print collage and spraypaint on canvas, Oehlen's paintings are characterised by dirty smears at their centre; reflecting the artist's ability to interrogate the possibilities of painting and challenge the viewer's reading of visual language.

Book Albert Oehlen Boxed Edition

Download or read book Albert Oehlen Boxed Edition written by Klaus Kertess and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited to 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist, each signed by the artist. Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen's paintings play the medium for all it's worth. After an early realization that the so-called death of painting actually freed his enthusiasm as to the number of aspects through which one could expand painting, Oehlen, got to work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his post-non-representational art. In his most recent work group Oehlen expands painting through the use of blatant advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork. Never without a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor, his work seems to be winking at us as it dares us to change the way we look at an image. Klaus Kertess throws a light on the years from 1988 onwards, when Oehlen saw himself self-consciously as a painter and started his first abstract works, then continued to probe the limits of the medium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Jonathan Meese Daniel Richter Tal R the Men who Fell from Earth written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Three international heavyweights in contemporary painting will join forces when Danish Tal R and his two German colleagues and friends, Jonathan Meese and Daniel Richter, hold a joint exhibition at Holstebro Kunstmuseum, under the title 'The Men Who Fell from Earth.' In recent decades, with an almost unrestrained energy, these three artists have made a name for themselves as significant innovators of the painting tradition. Their inspiration is often drawn from the borderline of what is generally acceptable, and the result is fabulous imagery that demonstrates great colouristic and expressive strength. Although there is sometimes a lot of humour present, the subjects addressed by Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter and Tal R are both serious and urgent"--Publisher's website.
