Book The Imagined Arctic in Speculative Fiction

Download or read book The Imagined Arctic in Speculative Fiction written by Maria Lindgren Leavenworth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imagined Arctic in Speculative Fiction explores the ways in which the Arctic is imagined and what function it is made to serve in a selection of speculative fictions: non-mimetic works that start from the implied question "What if?" Spanning slightly more than two centuries of speculative fiction, from the starting point in Mary Shelley’s 1818 Frankenstein to contemporary works that engage with the vast ramifications of anthropogenic climate change, analyses demonstrate how Arctic discourses are supported or subverted and how new Arctics are added to the textual tradition. To illuminate wider lines of inquiry informing the way the world is envisioned, humanity’s place and function in it, and more-than-human entanglements, analyses focus on the function of the actual Arctic and how this function impacts and is impacted by speculative elements. With effects of climate change training the global eye on the Arctic, and as debates around future northern cultural, economic and environmental sustainability intensify, there is a need for a deepened understanding of the discourses that have constructed and are constructing the Arctic. A careful mapping and serious consideration of both past and contemporary speculative visions thus illuminate the role the Arctic has played and may come to play in a diverse set of practices and fields.

Rahlys, disillusioned with urban life, the commercial use of her artistic talent, and an unfaithful boyfriend, returns to Alaska and purchases Trapper Bean’s log cabin in the pristine wilderness of the Northern Susitna Valley, seeking peace and solitude to paint. Unfortunately for Blaze, life in rural Alaska isn’t as peaceful as she expected. Among her many startling discoveries is that her sexy new handyman, Jack Thornton, has already ‘claimed’ the territory that her new lodge is sitting on, and he doesn't plan to leave… Further complicating matters, Jack makes it clear to Blaze that there are a good many things that go bump in the Alaskan night, and when a pack of werewolves goes rogue and starts killing or turning everyone along the Yentna River, Blaze and Jack find themselves in a fight for survival in this magic-soaked Land of the Midnight Sun. Book The Palgrave Handbook of Arctic Policy and Politics

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Arctic Policy and Politics written by Ken S. Coates and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic has, for some forty years, been among the most innovative policy environments in the world. The region has developed impressive systems for intra-regional cooperation, responded to the challenges of the rapid environmental change, empowered and engaged with Indigenous peoples, and dealt with the multiple challenges of natural resource development. The Palgrave Handbook on Arctic Policy and Politics has drawn on scholars from many countries and academic disciplines to focus on the central theme of Arctic policy innovation. The portrait that emerges from these chapters is of a complex, fluid policy environment, shaped by internal, national and global dynamics and by a wide range of political, legal, economic, and social transitions. The Arctic is a complex place from a political perspective and is on the verge of becoming even more so. Effective, proactive and forward-looking policy innovation will be required if the Far North is to be able to address its challenges and capitalize on its opportunities.

Book Bear Down Bear North

    Book Details:
  • Author : Melinda Moustakis
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2012-10-01
  • ISBN : 0820338931
  • Pages : 175 pages

Download or read book Bear Down Bear North written by Melinda Moustakis and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her debut collection, Melinda Moustakis brings to life a rough-and-tumble family of Alaskan homesteaders through a series of linked stories. Born in Alaska herself to a family with a homesteading legacy, Moustakis examines the near-mythological accounts of the Alaskan wilderness that are her inheritance and probes the question of what it means to live up to larger-than-life expectations for toughness and survival. The characters in Bear Down, Bear North are salt-tongued fishermen, fisherwomen, and hunters, scrappy storytellers who put themselves in the path of destruction—sometimes a harsh snowstorm, sometimes each other—and live to tell the tale. While backtrolling for kings on the Kenai River or filleting the catch of the Halibut Hellion with marvelous speed, these characters recount the gamble they took that didn't pay off, or they expound on how not only does Uncle Too-Soon need a girlfriend, the whole state of Alaska needs a girlfriend. A story like “The Mannequin at Soldotna” takes snapshots: a doctor tends to an injured fisherman, a man covets another man's green fishing lure, a girl is found in the river with a bullet in her head. Another story offers an easy moment with a difficult mother, when she reaches out to touch a breaching whale. This is a book about taking a fishhook in the eye, about drinking cranberry lick and Jippers and smoking Big-Z cigars. This is a book about the one good joke, or the one night lit up with stars, that might get you through the winter.

Book The Alaskan

  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book The Alaskan written by James Oliver Curwood and published by Arose Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaskan by James Oliver Curwood, is the story of Mary Standish and her escape from her past into the uncivilized wilderness of Alaska in the early 1900s. It is the story of Alan Holt and his fight to protect the Alaskan resources of his own vast ranch land and the people he loves. As the two stories intertwine, tragedy strikes Mary aboard the steamer bound for Alaska prompting Alan to fight against the politics and corruption behind the tragedy that also threaten the native people and land of Alaska. The stories of Mary and Alan lead to gripping action on the Alaskan frontier where men fight battles as in the days of the American Wild West with the law hundreds of miles away across the wilderness. This novel tells about the real problems that Alaskans faced in 1910 before the discovery of oil - when gold, crops, herds, and land were the commodities people fought over. James Oliver Curwood spent many years in this wilderness and wrote authentically from first hand experience of the struggles between conservation in land development, and the greed and corruption of those that would plunder the land. He was an ecologist before it was popular and was appointed Chairman of the Game, Fish, and Wildlife Committee of the Michigan Department of Conservation in 1927.

Book Flickering in the Arctic

Download or read book Flickering in the Arctic written by FAA Cwg and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique anthology celebrates the Community Writers Group of Fairbanks, Alaska. Founded in April 1998, the Community Writers Group includes writers from all walks of life and levels of experience. What they share is their passion for writing and their commitment to helping one another grow. These emerging writers take a clear-eyed look at their past and present lives, including adventures operating the Healy Roadhouse, running a dog sled team down a well packed trail, and hitting pay dirt at Ketchum Creek. Not all adventures are Alaskan in spirit, though. One story tells of a woman's miraculous recovery from breast cancer, another follows a runaway boy who jumps a freight train with nothing more than a pork chop to sustain him. Other stories and poems draw upon fantasy. How does a vampire who dislikes the taste of blood cope? What if a boy led his family out of a blizzard by pretending to be the leader of a French-Indian tribe who defied British soldiers? These writers speak from the heart, a heart as big as all outdoors. Pull up a chair and join them.

Book excerpt: Imagine a place where people know each other by the color of their parkas, where dogs are citizens, and where a handshake is as good as currency. Imagine a time when the wild went on forever, and the only link to the outside was a brave pilot with a shy smile. Imagine a world blanketed in snow and warmed by people.... Delightfully, that time is now, and that place is Alaska--but not just anywhere in Alaska. Here, the little towns are the last great secret of the Last Frontier; true Alaska living is found in small villages full of scruffy cabins and original characters. Author Slim Randles knew and loved one such town, presented here as the fictional Kahiltna. In this classic of Alaska fiction, the array of mushers and pilots, cheechakos and sourdoughs who call Kahiltna home are exuberantly true to life, as are their adventures, from the hilarious to the horrible. In the season of the long dark, it is the small town that lets Alaskans fend off the isolation and chill of winter near the top of the world.
