This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Historical Sitka Spruce Plantations at Unalaska Bay, Alaska The Aleutian Islands extend miles (1770 km) in a southwest arc from the Alaska Peninsula to the Commander Islands of East Asia and separate the Bering Sea from the North Pacific Ocean. The most striking feature of the Aleutian Islands is the treeless landscape. Absence of forests was an obstacle to colonization of the region during the 18th and 19ln centuries. The nearest forests were more than 500 nautical miles (926 km) northeast of the Aleutian Islands and wood was needed for firewood, construction of houses and other buildings, and repair of ships. Driftwood was substituted for timber in building construction and other uses. Early 19th century Russian settlers transplanted Sitka spruce (picea sitchensis (bong) Carr.) from south east Alaska or Kodiak Island to Unalaska and neighboring islands (fig. Success of the plantationsz attracted the attention of visiting botanists, and many additional attempts were made to establish trees in the Aleutian Islands during the 19th and 2oth centuries. Thousands of seedlings from Kodiak, southeast Alaska, and the con tiguous 48 States were transplanted during World War II to reduce the monotony of the landscape, beautify dwellings, and control erosion of disturbed soils (bruce and Court Sitka spruce was the most successful species, and many seedlings transplanted during the 19th century and World War II survived on sheltered sites in Unalaska Bay. Trees transplanted during the early 19th century produced natural regeneration on disturbed sites after World War II. A dense 19th century grove on Expedition Island and several small World War II plantations on Amaknak Island provided an opportunity to measure tree size and growth. The measurements were used to estimate the growth and yield of fully stocked plantations on productive sites in Unalaska Bay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Alaska: Letters of Mrs. Eugene S. Willard The world is often tempted to think that the age of faith has passed away. In the midst of the greed of money-making, the rivalries of social display and the selfishness of pleasure-seeking, even the Church herself is almost surprised at high heroic sacrifice for the cause of Christ and the salvation of men. Perhaps this may partially account for the pleased surprise with which many have perused these letters as they have come fresh from the front of missionary operations on the remote borders of our own land. But as the great Head of the Church is "the same yesterday, to-day and for ever," so his heroic spirit of sacrifice springs to life eternally beautiful in the heirs of his grace. Book Alaska Nuggets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alaska Nuggets Classic Reprint written by Frank Bernard Camp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Nuggets Throughout the ages which have elapsed since the first man was banished from the Garden of Eden, the wanderlust has lured both men and women to the far corners of the earth in quest of something new and strange. The lure of the glittering metal called gold and the desire for unbridled freedom have caused man and also woman to leave behind the comforts of civilization to journey over the "unblazed trails" which lead through the "open places" of the big "out-doors." These men and women are known as Pioneers and it is to them and the children of them that the credit should go for the blazing of trails into unknown lands. The Pioneers of Alaska, those men and women who prospected the remote places of the Territory, where they established camps that have since become thriving towns and cities, deserve the lion's share of the credit for the development of Alaska. These hardy, sincere men and women have builded a lasting foundation on which those who follow in their footsteps can erect permanent homes, and in the years to come the "Chechaco" who journeys to Alaska, will find all of those things that are to be found at the present time in the highly civilized communities throughout the world. Alaska, now an infant in swaddling clothes will soon learn to walk. Her footsteps will be guided by the sons and daughters of the men and women who blazed the trails to the far camps, and as she grows she will take her rightful place among the other states of the union, and her people will have a voice in the councils of the Nation. The verses in this little volume are not literary gems such as the famous poets have written; they are simply a collection of typical Alaskan life and have been written with the sincere desire to portray Alaska and the people of Alaska as they really are. I am confident that those people who know Alaska will see the real in all the lines. I am also certain that those people who have yet to know the real Alaska will be greatly assisted in the lesson they must learn before they can know it, by reading these humble lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rainbow's End: Alaska So the little hand, soft and white as a crumpled rose-leaf, snuggled into the larger palm, and the tiny fingers, with implicit child trust, confided themselves to the others leading, were it to the ends of the earth. And they two left the turmoil, the un-ease, the grime of Chicago behind them, shaking the dust of that city from their happy wandering feet. The tired brown eyes and the merry blue ones looked gladly into one another. The pilgrims laughed softly to themselves when the wheels began to turn and they realized they were actually started for the end of the rainbow. Hats were placed upon the broad shelf over the door, wraps hung upon numerous brass hooks. The little body screwed herself into a corner of the "make-believe house" and gazed out upon the "slippery country," while the other looked musingly about the compartment. Time was, and not so long ago, when a contortionist was the only person who could come out whole from a night's railway travel. People having spines, and those whose joints worked but one way, suffered through the long night watches in wretchedness which distinctly lowered their moral tone. The name Sitka, referring to Sitka, Alaska, and the names coast Spruce, tideland spruce, and yellow spruce (ll)i -sometimes used for this species - are descriptive of its range, which is restricted to a long, narrow strip along the Pacific Ocean from California to Alaska (fig. Width varies to a maximum of about 130 miles in Alaska, which is the distance from the western shore of the islands to the limit of the type on the sea slope of the coastal mountains. Moving south the range generally narrows but is very irregular, with spruce reaching many miles up coastal streams. Maximum width in Washington and Oregon is 25 to 30 miles. Book excerpt: Into the Wild meets Helter Skelter in this riveting true story of a modern-day homesteading family in the deepest reaches of the Alaskan wilderness—and of the chilling secrets of its maniacal, spellbinding patriarch. When Papa Pilgrim, his wife, and their fifteen children appeared in the Alaska frontier outpost of McCarthy, their new neighbors saw them as a shining example of the homespun Christian ideal. But behind the family's proud piety and beautiful old-timey music lay Pilgrim's dark past: his strange connection to the Kennedy assassination and a trail of chaos and anguish that followed him from Dallas and New Mexico. Pilgrim soon sparked a tense confrontation with the National Park Service fiercely dividing the community over where a citizen’s rights end and the government’s power begins. As the battle grew more intense, the turmoil in his brood made it increasingly difficult to tell whether his children were messianic followers or hostages in desperate need of rescue. In this powerful piece of Americana, written with uncommon grace and high drama, veteran Alaska journalist, Tom Kizzia uses his unparalleled access to capture an era-defining clash between environmentalists and pioneers ignited by a mesmerizing sociopath who held a town and a family captive.

Book Into the Wild

Download or read book Into the Wild written by Jon Krakauer and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. This is the unforgettable story of how Christopher Johnson McCandless came to die. "It may be nonfiction, but Into the Wild is a mystery of the highest order." —Entertainment Weekly McCandess had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Not long after, he was dead. Into the Wild is the mesmerizing, heartbreaking tale of an enigmatic young man who goes missing in the wild and whose story captured the world’s attention. Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and, unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild. Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interest that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the drives and desires that propelled McCandless. When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris. He is said to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity, and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding—and not an ounce of sentimentality. Into the Wild is a tour de force. The power and luminosity of Jon Krakauer's stoytelling blaze through every page.

Book excerpt: This “engrossing” (The Wall Street Journal) national bestseller and true “heartbreaking tale of tragedy and redemption” (Hampton Sides, bestselling author of Ghost Soldiers) reveals how a discovered diary—found during a brutal World War II battle—changed our war-torn society’s perceptions of Japan. May 1943. The Battle of Attu—called “The Forgotten Battle” by World War II veterans—was raging on the Aleutian island with an Arctic cold, impenetrable fog, and rocketing winds that combined to create some of the worst weather on Earth. Both American and Japanese forces tirelessly fought in a yearlong campaign, with both sides suffering thousands of casualties. Included in this number was a Japanese medic whose war diary would lead a Silver Star–winning American soldier to find solace for his own tortured soul. The doctor’s name was Paul Nobuo Tatsuguchi, a Hiroshima native who had graduated from college and medical school in California. He loved America, but was called to enlist in the Imperial Army of his native Japan. Heartsick, wary of war, yet devoted to Japan, Tatsuguchi performed his duties and kept a diary of events as they unfolded—never knowing that it would be found by an American soldier named Dick Laird. Laird, a hardy, resilient underground coal miner, enlisted in the US Army to escape the crushing poverty of his native Appalachia. In a devastating mountainside attack in Alaska, Laird was forced to make a fateful decision, one that saved him and his comrades, but haunted him for years. Tatsuguchi’s diary was later translated and distributed among US soldiers. It showed the common humanity on both sides of the battle. But it also ignited fierce controversy that is still debated today. After forty years, Laird was determined to return it to the family and find peace with Tatsuguchi’s daughter, Laura Tatsuguchi Davis. Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Mark Obmascik “writes with tremendous grace about a forgotten part of our history, telling the same story from two opposing points of view—perhaps the only way warfare can truly be understood” (Helen Thorpe, author of Soldier Girls).
