Book excerpt: The rich artistic traditions of Alaska Natives are the subject of this landmark volume, which examines the work of the premier Alaska artists of the twentieth century. Ranging across the state from the islands of the Bering Sea to the interior forests, Alaska Native Art provides a living context for beadwork and ivory carving, basketry and skin sewing. Examples of work from Tlingit, Aleutian Islanders, Pacific Eskimo, Athabascan, Yupik, and Inupiaq artists make this volume the most comprehensive study of Alaskan art ever published. Book Alaska Native Artistic Revitalization

Download or read book Alaska Native Artistic Revitalization written by Nadia Jackinsky-Horrell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a study of Alaska Native artistic revival based on fieldwork in several communities in Alaska, archival research, discussions with Alaska Native artists and object-based studies. Each chapter focuses on specific aspects of revival including case studies of art forms that have been described as "revived" or "reviving," the history of colonization in Alaska as an important aspect affecting the loss of cultural and artistic traditions, and factors that have contributed to the revival movement such as the impact of the passage of the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act (1971), institutional and private patronage of Alaska Native arts, the public school system in Alaska, and governmental support for Native arts. It concludes with a discussion of new directions for Alaska Native art forms that express cultural revival. This dissertation situates artistic revival activities as an integral and ongoing aspect of Alaska Native art history that is influenced both by Alaska Native communities and non-Native forces. Artistic revival activities are found to occur as part of the decolonization process, as a result of encouragement from the arts market and governmental powers, and out of a desire among Alaska Native peoples to correct misinformation about Alaska Native history and culture that has been perpetuated through popular media. By examining revival activities taking place throughout the state of Alaska from multiple angles, this dissertation fills in a gap in the art historical literature where previous publications that have examined revival have tended to focus only on Southeast Alaska on the Northwest Coast or only provided limited information on the subject.

Book Not Just a Pretty Face

Download or read book Not Just a Pretty Face written by Molly Lee and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in a full-color second edition, Not Just a Pretty Face is an engaging exploration of the role of dolls and doll making in Alaska Native cultures. From ancient ivory carvings to the thriving tourist market, dolls and human figurines have played integral parts in the ritual, economic, and social lives of Native Alaskans. Dolls served as children's playthings, represented absent community members at ceremonies, and predicted the movements of game animals for shamans. Not Just a Pretty Face surveys these and other uses of dolls and figurines, illustrating in beautiful color photographs the diversity of the doll-making tradition in Eskimo, Athabaskan, and Northwest Coast Native communities. Authors explore the ethnographic literature, twentieth-century oral histories, and photographic documentation of dolls and the doll-making process. Contemporary doll makers explain, in their own words, how they learned to make dolls and what doll making means to them. The second edition features a photo essay on Rosalie Paniyak of Chevak, one of the most influential doll makers in Alaska today. Not Just a Pretty Face provides a panoramic view of an ancient tradition and situates the art of doll making within a contemporary context. Scholarly, yet accessible, Not Just a Pretty Face is a lively contribution to the literature on dolls, anthropology, and Native studies.

Book Northwest Coast and Alaska Native Art

Download or read book Northwest Coast and Alaska Native Art written by Christopher Patrello and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full-color publication highlights beautiful objects--both useful and ceremonial--made by the Indigenous artists of the Northwest Coast and Alaska. Since 1925, the Denver Art Museum has collected both historic and contemporary arts from these regions on the criterion of aesthetic quality. This guide, published on the occasion of the reopening of the Denver Art Museum's permanent collection galleries for Northwest Coast and Alaska Native art, includes seldom-told stories about individual artworks, as well as the museum's history of working with living Native artists. From the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition to recent commissions by Marianne Nicolson and Michael Nicholl Yahgulanaas, the Denver Art Museum has long been committed to collaborating with and incorporating contemporary artists into the collection. Alongside the museum's first-rate collection, contributions from four contemporary Indigenous artists provide context for historical works created by their cultures.

Book Representation and Marginalization

Download or read book Representation and Marginalization written by Dawn Drake Biddison and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Alaska, contemporary Native artists are creating compelling works of art, yet, in the literature and exhibitions about Native North American contemporary art, Alaska Native art receives little if any attention. In this study, I assess how contemporary Alaska Native art is presented to the public to evaluate whether these representations marginalize this artwork. I examine the creation, exhibition and reception of contemporary Alaska Native art based on the perspectives of the artists, exhibit evaluations and viewer responses. My goal in this study is to substantiate the need to address the way Alaska Native art is presented and to analyze current practices. In particular, I seek to emphasize the importance of creating contextualized presentations of contemporary Alaska Native art using multiple perspectives and interpretive media based on collaboration between the exhibitors of public art and Native artists and communities. By creating more inclusive, informative representations of Alaska Native art, presentations can begin to address the differing requirements of a variety of audiences, utilize the critical attention given to Native American and Euro-American art elsewhere and provoke a re-thinking of preconceptions that continue to diminish the accomplishments of Alaska Native artists"--Leaf iii.
