Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States needed a road to Alaska so they could defend the Aleutians from Japan. They sent soldiers to build the Alaska Highway. The segregated Black 97th Engineers built the road in Alaska, and when their disorganized white officers struggled to make progress, the army replaced their commander. The new one got the job done but ignored military protocol and discipline, so the army, worried about undisciplined black soldiers, replaced him too. And to put the fear of God into the soldiers, the army trumped up a mutiny charge against ten of them and sentenced them to long prison terms at hard labor.

Book excerpt: We Fought the Road is the story of the building of the Alaska-Canada Highway during World War II. More than one third of the 10,607 builders were black; thought to be incapable of performing on a war front by many of their white commanding officers. Their task--which required punching through wilderness on a route blocked by the Rocky Mountains and deadly permafrost during the worst winter on record--has been likened to the building of the Panama Canal. Unlike most accounts that focus on the road's military planners, We Fought the Road is boots-on-the-ground and often personal, based in part on letters from the "Three Cent Romance," the successful courtship via mail discovered in the authors' family papers

Book Special Powers and the Nine Rings

Download or read book Special Powers and the Nine Rings written by Mike J. Rockeyfeller and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Special Powers and the Nine Rings, author Mike J. Rockeyfeller talks about the clues left behind as each of the people from his life meet their fate. From an early age, Rockeyfeller was suspicious of his relatives as they discounted his right to property over the years. His Uncle Gee just took his fathers land, car, and truck as his own when he died, never considering his nephews right to his own fathers property. Rockeyfeller lives his life by accepting his intuition and recognizing that events do not happen by chance. There is no specific time to relax ones senesces and ignore intuition. He recounts the instances where his intuition is borne out in the events that take place, from a friend accidently shooting himself with twenty-three hours of his birthday to the death of his selfish Uncle Gee in a train crash. Destiny has its own plan, and once its in place, there is no going back. There are dates that have special meaning in each persons life. You can uncover the dates that have significance in your life and relate them to all that is meaningful to you. Claim the good karma for yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying To Alaska—A Cross-Continent Adventure Join writer and pilot William S. Walker on one of general aviation’s most revered long-distance trips—a flight to Alaska. Walker writes, “Alaska is one of those ultimate journeys for aviators from the Lower 48 because it takes most of them completely out of their comfortable environments, not for just a four-hour stint or for a few days, but for weeks or longer. We were in the air 74 hours, flying more than 7,000 miles in a 59-year-old Cessna. It was probably the longest flying trip I will ever undertake and perhaps the best I will ever fly, although I hope there is even better to come.” Alaska Highway Flight Log is Walker’s personal daybook of the trip with distances, maps, airport identifiers and, foremost, his personal observations on the flying trip of a lifetime.

Book The Corps of Engineers

Download or read book The Corps of Engineers written by Karl Christian Dod and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers Engineer operations in support of the U.S. Army in the war against Japan. The story begins with the defense build-up in 1939 and ends with the Japanese surrender aboard the battleship Missouri on 2 September 1945. Geographically, Engineer operations extended from the Panama Canal to India and from Alaska to Australia, in actual or potential areas of conflict. The author has attempted not only to depict various types of Engineer operations but also to indicate how Engineer work helped implement Allied strategy. Included are discussions of the Engineer position in the command structure and a general account of both Engineer combat and service missions within a given theater. -- From the Preface.
