Book excerpt: Every Australian has formed their own opinion of Alan Bond, the high-flyer who stayed to face the music. Bond, the autobiography, is his chance to tell it how it really was. In Alan Bond's long-awaited autobiography, Bond, written with bestselling author Rob Mundle, the famous Australian answers his critics and reflects on his mistakes as well as the outside influences that were working to bring him down. He deals with family tragedies, including the death of his daughter Susanne, and gives his own engaging account of how he went from working-class signwriter to national hero to jail inmate. There are the first tentative forays into property development in the Perth suburbs while his family lived in a garage; the America's Cup win that stopped the nation; his part in the creation of the Australian icon, the Boxing Kangaroo; his bankruptcy, trials, and his imprisonment for over three-and-a-half years, as well as the subsequent rebuilding of his life. Along the way Alan Bond provides a telling snapshot of how business was done in the 1980s; of how the normal caution of banks and corporate leaders was tossed aside at the first smell of success and profits. Bond tackles the myths and rumours that have developed around this former Australian of the Year. He concedes he has made mistakes personally and professionally. Here he talks about where he went wrong and why he fell so far. In 2015, aged seventy-seven, Alan Bond died after complications from open-heart surgery.

Book The Rise and Fall of Alan Bond

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of Alan Bond written by Paul Barry and published by Bantam. This book was released on 1991 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alan Bond won the America's Cup in 1983, Australia celebrated and welcomed him as a hero. Now, seven years later, the nation's most famous entrepreneur has become almost a villain. His empire is in ruins, he owes billions of dollars to the banks, and a special investigation has started into his business dealings. THE RISE AND FALL OF ALAN BOND is the story of how we made this man a hero and why he fell from grace. It is also the story of an era-- when Greed was Good; when banks blindly lent billions of dollars to Australia's high-flying entrepreneurs to build their paper empires. Smiling, loud-mouthed, uncomplicated, almost always cheerful, Alan Bond was a rags-to-riches success, a role model for young Australians. The poor immigrant-turned-signwriter who became a multi-millionaire was living proof that, for those who worked hard and believed in themselves, Australia was the land of opportunity. But there was another Alan Bond-- the one who didn't care a damn for the rules, the one who manufactured profits, the one who paid himself massive fees for services of doubtful value. Award-winning ABC-TV FOUR CORNERS reporter Paul Barry made headlines in 1989 with his dramatic revelations about Bond Corporation's business deals and its Cook Islands tax schemes. Now he traces Alan Bond's scramble to the top of the pile, how he plundered his public companies and how the banks and corporate regulators let him do it. But the THE RISE AND FALL OF ALAN BOND is not just about a business empire; it is about the man and what drives him on. It is about a boy who longed to see his name in lights, who was desperate to be accepted by establishment, who wanted to be Sir Alan.

Book Readings in Distributed Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Readings in Distributed Artificial Intelligence written by Alan H. Bond and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most artificial intelligence research investigates intelligent behavior for a single agent--solving problems heuristically, understanding natural language, and so on. Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) is concerned with coordinated intelligent behavior: intelligent agents coordinating their knowledge, skills, and plans to act or solve problems, working toward a single goal, or toward separate, individual goals that interact. DAI provides intellectual insights about organization, interaction, and problem solving among intelligent agents. This comprehensive collection of articles shows the breadth and depth of DAI research. The selected information is relevant to emerging DAI technologies as well as to practical problems in artificial intelligence, distributed computing systems, and human-computer interaction. "Readings in Distributed Artificial Intelligence" proposes a framework for understanding the problems and possibilities of DAI. It divides the study into three realms: the natural systems approach (emulating strategies and representations people use to coordinate their activities), the engineering/science perspective (building automated, coordinated problem solvers for specific applications), and a third, hybrid approach that is useful in analyzing and developing mixed collections of machines and human agents working together. The editors introduce the volume with an important survey of the motivations, research, and results of work in DAI. This historical and conceptual overview combines with chapter introductions to guide the reader through this fascinating field. A unique and extensive bibliography is also provided.

Book Electrochemical Science and Technology

Download or read book Electrochemical Science and Technology written by Keith Oldham and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemistry is a discipline of wide scientific and technological interest. Scientifically, it explores the electrical properties of materials and especially the interfaces between different kinds of matter. Technologically, electrochemistry touches our lives in many ways that few fully appreciate; for example, materials as diverse as aluminum, nylon, and bleach are manufactured electrochemically, while the batteries that power all manner of appliances, vehicles, and devices are the products of electrochemical research. Other realms in which electrochemical science plays a crucial role include corrosion, the disinfection of water, neurophysiology, sensors, energy storage, semiconductors, the physics of thunderstorms, biomedical analysis, and so on. This book treats electrochemistry as a science in its own right, albeit resting firmly on foundations provided by chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Early chapters discuss the electrical and chemical properties of materials from which electrochemical cells are constructed. The behavior of such cells is addressed in later chapters, with emphasis on the electrodes and the reactions that occur on their surfaces. The role of transport to and from electrodes is a topic that commands attention, because it crucially determines cell efficiency. Final chapters deal with voltammetry, the methodology used to investigate electrode behavior. Interspersed among the more fundamental chapters are chapters devoted to applications of electrochemistry: electrosynthesis, power sources, “green electrochemistry”, and corrosion. Electrochemical Science and Technology is addressed to all who have a need to come to grips with the fundamentals of electrochemistry and to learn about some of its applications. It will constitute a text for a senior undergraduate or graduate course in electrochemistry. It also serves as a source of material of interest to scientists and technologists in various fields throughout academia, industry, and government – chemists, physicists, engineers, environmentalists, materials scientists, biologists, and those in related endeavors. This book: Provides a background to electrochemistry, as well as treating the topic itself. Is accessible to all with a foundation in physical science, not solely to chemists. Is addressed both to students and those later in their careers. Features web links (through www.wiley.com/go/EST) to extensive material that is of a more tangential, specialized, or mathematical nature. Includes questions as footnotes to support the reader’s evolving comprehension of the material, with fully worked answers provided on the web. Provides web access to Excel® spreadsheets which allow the reader to model electrochemical events. Has a copious Appendix of relevant data.

Book Falling Bombs and Siren Songs

Download or read book Falling Bombs and Siren Songs written by Alan Bond and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Bond was a child of London, shaped by the horrors of World War II. He survived the worst of the London Blitz era before being sent to live in Devon. Even though he was sent away for his own safety, life with his elderly relatives compared rather unfavourably with life among the falling bombs. As a young man, he decided upon a career in medicine. After earning his degree at university, he followed another dream of life abroad. He settled in Tasmania to work as an anaesthetist. This new existence proved too challenging for his marriage to survive, so he started over again as a single man. But life had other plans in store for this adventurer. He met the Blonde, and his life changed forever. Now retired, he and his Australian lady shared a time of adventure on the high seas, daring the often challenging waters of the Tasman Sea and the Bass Strait. On board their boat, a wooden cutter, they explored the beautiful coasts of Tasmania and uncovered some of the ghosts of the state's colonial past. Alan Bond's story is one of adventure, loss, and newfound love, of second chances, surprises, and dreams pursued and achieved.
