This book was released on 2000-11-08 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adapt traditional library techniques to the task of indexing, cataloging, and metadata creation for Internet resources! The rapid shift toward digital resources in K-6, higher education, adult education, and other learning communities, has greatly increased the demand on the information professionals to manage this new technology. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet, the first book of its kind, helps clarify the process of cataloging and indexing the vast quantities of data available in digital form, so that users can readily access the information they need. This comprehensive volume documents the experiences of metadata creators (both catalogers and indexers), library administrators, and educators who are actively engaged in projects that organize Internet resources for educational purposes. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet shares the problems the authors encountered in the far-reaching project of creating metadata for a new class of resource, as well as the solutions and options they found. Tackling the salient issues of cataloging and indexing, Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet: examines the status quo of cataloging Internet resources explores the relationship between traditional cataloging practices and Internet cataloging introduces a number of educationally focused metadata schemes, including ARIADNE, GEM, and IMS examines theoretical and practice aspects of metadata in relation to today's evolving Internet-based educational terrain discusses specific projects, including ALADIN, PEN-DOR, the Schomburg Research Library, and a catalog of Greek sculpture fragments for the Perseus Project offers charts, figures, screen shots, and Web addresses for initiatives using metadata to facilitate access This is an exciting time to be involved with information services. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet presents the ideas and experiences of the pioneering librarians who are mapping the intricacies of the World Wide Web. Book Distributed Optimization with Application to Power Systems and Control

Download or read book Distributed Optimization with Application to Power Systems and Control written by Engelmann, Alexander and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical optimization techniques are among the most successful tools for controlling technical systems optimally with feasibility guarantees. Yet, they are often centralized—all data has to be collected in one central and computationally powerful entity. Methods from distributed optimization overcome this limitation. Classical approaches, however, are often not applicable due to non-convexities. This work develops one of the first frameworks for distributed non-convex optimization.

Book Creeping Environmental Problems and Sustainable Development in the Aral Sea Basin

Download or read book Creeping Environmental Problems and Sustainable Development in the Aral Sea Basin written by Michael Glantz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental degradation in the Aral Sea basin has been a touchstone for increasing public awareness of environmental issues. The Aral crisis has been touted as a 'quiet Chernobyl' and as one of the worst human-made environmental catastrophes of the twentieth century. This multidisciplinary 1999 book comprehensively describes the slow onset of low grade but incremental changes (i.e. creeping environmental change) which affected the region and its peoples. Through a set of case studies, it describes how the region's decision-makers allowed these changes to grow into an environmental and societal nightmare. It outlines many lessons to be learned for other areas undergoing detrimental creeping environmental change, and provides an important example of how to approach such disasters for students and researchers of environmental studies, global change, political science and history.

Book Physiology of the Cladocera

Download or read book Physiology of the Cladocera written by Nikolai N. Smirnov and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Cladocera, Second Edition, is a much-needed summary of foundational information on these increasingly important model organisms. This unique and valuable review is based on the world's literature, including Russian research not previously widely available, and offers systematically arranged data on the physiology of Cladocera, assisting with explanation of their life and distribution. It features the addition of new sections and a vast amount of new information, such as the latest data on feeding, nutrition, pathological physiology, chemical composition, neurosecretion, and behavior, as well as hormonal regulation, antioxidants, and the biochemical background of effects of natural and anthropogenic factors. Additional expertly updated contributions in genetics and cytology, and a new chapter in embryology, round out the physiological chapters, and provide comprehensive insight into the state of knowledge of Cladocera and their underlying mechanisms. Cladocera crustaceans have become globally studied for many purposes, including genetic, molecular, ecological, environmental, water quality, systematics, and evolutionary biology research. Since the genome of Daphnia was sequenced and published, that system has gained much wider exposure, also leading to a rapidly growing awareness of the importance of understanding physiological processes as they relate to evolutionary and ecological genomics as well as ecogenomic toxicology. However, the physiological background on Cladocera has been fragmentary (including on the other 700 known species besides Daphnia), despite the extensive literature on species identification and morphology. This work addresses this issue by collecting and synthesizing from the literature the state of knowledge of cladoceran physiology, including discussion on both adequately and inadequately investigated fields, and thus directions of future research. - Summarizes fundamental information obtained in recent years, including on steroids, antioxidants, hormones, nanoparticles, and impact of wastewater of pharmaceutical industries - Provides the foundational information needed for scientists and practitioners from a variety of fields, including conservation and evolutionary biology, genomics, ecology, ecotoxicology, comparative physiology, limnology, zoology–carcinology, and water quality assessment - Features coverage of both Daphniids and representatives of other families, with attention drawn to little-studied aspects of their physiology, especially of those living in the litt oral zone - Includes guidance to the literature on cladoceran physiology in four languages - Discusses advantages and shortcomings of Cladocera as experimental animals and indicators of water quality

Book Evacuee Encounters on the Soviet Home Front During the Second World War

Download or read book Evacuee Encounters on the Soviet Home Front During the Second World War written by Natalie Belsky and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first to examine the experiences of the millions of Soviet civilians evacuated to the interior of the country during the Second World War in the context of their encounters and relations with local communities and populations across Soviet Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Siberia, and the Urals. The book considers the impact of this episode of massive population displacement across Eurasia on individuals, communities, and society more broadly. It explores how the challenges associated with wartime displacement gave rise to tensions between evacuees and local residents. These frictions, in turn, forced individuals to interrogate the meaning, terms, and limitations of citizenship and belonging in the Soviet Union. Evacuation thus played a critical role in the changing relationship between citizens and the Soviet state in the war and postwar periods. Furthermore, this study pays particular attention to the plight of Soviet Jewish evacuees, who constitute the largest contingent of Holocaust survivors in Europe, and the rise of anti-Semitism on the Soviet home front during the war. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars of the Second World War, migration and displacement, the Holocaust, Soviet Jewish history, and the Soviet experience more broadly.
