The book opens with two theoretical essays on the subject of subversive tendencies and myth reinvention in the contemporary novel. From there, it moves on to the analysis of essential texts. Firstly, classical myths in works by authors such as André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino or Christa Wolf (for instance, Theseus, Oedipus or Medea) are discussed. Then, myths of biblical origin – such as the Flood or the Golem – are revisited in the work of Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes and Cynthia Ozick. A further section is concerned with the place of modern myths (Faust, the ghost, Ophelia…) in the fiction of Günter Grass, Paul Auster, or Clara Janés. The contributors have also delved into the relationship between myth and art – especially in the discourse of contemporary advertising, painting and cinema – and myth’s intercultural dimensions: hybridity in the Latin American novels of Augusto Roa Bastos and Carlos Fuentes, and in the Hindu-themed novels of Bharati Mukherjee. This volume emerges from the careful selection of 37 essays out of over 200 which were put forward by outstanding scholars from 25 different countries for the Madrid International Conference on Myth and Subversion (March 2011). Abren el libro dos estudios teóricos sobre la tendencia subversiva y la reinvención de mitos en la actualidad. Prosigue el análisis de diversos textos de primera importancia. En primer lugar se revisan los mitos clásicos en autores como André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino o Christa Wolf (p. ej., Teseo, Edipo, Medea). En segundo lugar, la reescritura de los mitos bíblicos según Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes o Cynthia Ozick (p. ej., el diluvio o el Golem). En tercer lugar, mitos modernos en la ficción de Günter Grass, Paul Auster o Clara Janés (p. ej., Fausto, el fantasma, Ofelia). El estudio se centra en el intercambio comercial con Nueva España y los vericuetos de la prohibición comercial entre colonias. Muestra, por una parte, el carácter imperialista de la corona que gobernó sus posesiones del Nuevo Mundo como colonias más que como reinos en el aspecto económico, aunque una de las primeras cosas que el tráfico del cacao puso en evidencia es que la prohibición de la Corona del siglo XVII no detuvo la exportación de cacao, aunque sí frenó el crecimiento de Guayaquil. Por otra parte, la investigación establece el tráfico naviero, los montos de las cargas de cacao que arribaron a Acapulco y las manifestaciones de los precios en el mercado de la ciudad de México y trata de demostrar que la oferta creciente de cacao guayaquil, ayudó a mantener los precios estables en un contexto general de crecimiento de los precios en la segunda parte del siglo XVIII.

La reciente elección de un nuevo pontífice, de nacionalidad argentina, el Papa Francisco, está por ver por dónde se inclinará. En el presente texto se aborda el tema de la relación de la Iglesia y el Carlismo en la España contemporánea. El Carlismo nunca se sintió favorecido por la Iglesia, institución que ha cruzado el Rubicón desde la época de Juan XXIII, en la que se afirmó el pluralismo político y se negó el apoyo al proyecto democristiano de Joaquín Ruíz Giménez. Todo ello ha hecho crecer lo que ya se creía enterrado: el anticlericalismo. Un ejemplo de la respuesta carlista fue la advertencia de Don Javier al cardenal Tarancón, presidente entonces de la Conferencia Episcopal Española. En el texto se relatan desde los enormes privilegios que goza la Iglesia actual hasta su enfrentamiento a todo planteamiento que significara un avance o renovación ideológica de la sociedad española. Posiblemente este trabajo escandalizará a algunos y, sin embargo, a otros les parecerá que nos hemos quedado cortos. El asunto tiene su lógica, ya que lo contrario sería creer que la actual sociedad española pasa de todo. Pero está demostrado que no es así.

Over a decade, ELCA aims to follow more than ten thousand households in urban and rural zones in Colombia; until now there have been six follow-up years.
