Imam W. Deen Mohammed, (2.) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., (3.) Mr. Elijah Muhammad, (4.) Mr. Abdul Malik Shabazz also known as Malcolm X, and finally Mr. Fredrick Douglas. I believe the vision seen by Dr. King in his I have a dream speech will only be fulfilled in the religion of Al Islaam (Islam). The demographics of the West remain sluggish, while the population of the Muslim world explodes, widening the cultural gap and all but guaranteeing the outbreak of war. Leaving aside the media's sound and fury on this issue, measured analysis shows another reality taking shape: rapprochement between these two civilizations, benefiting from a universal movement with roots in the Enlightenment. The historical and geographical sweep of this book discredits the notion of a specific Islamic demography. The range of fertility among Muslim women, for example, is as varied as religious behavior among Muslims in general. Whether agnostics, fundamentalist Salafis, or al-Qaeda activists, Muslims are a diverse group that prove the variety and individuality of Islam. Youssef Courbage and Emmanuel Todd consider different degrees of literacy, patriarchy, and defensive reactions among minority Muslim populations, underscoring the spread of massive secularization throughout the Arab and Muslim world. Book excerpt: At the time of his death in 1979, Ayatullah Taleghani was chairman of Iran's Revolutionary Council, a member of the Assembly of Experts elected to draft a constitution for a new Islamic Republic, and also leader of Friday prayers in Tehran. He had just delivered seven lectures on the Qur'an for television. He had recently travelled to northern Iran to mediate in conflicts with the Kurds. A fe months before that, in what were the final weeks of the old regime, he had arranged mourning ceremonies for masses of dead civilians and headed demonstrations calling for a new governmnet under the leadership of Khomeini. All this Taleghani accomplished in the space of mere ten months - - his release from prison for the last time had only come in November 1978. A foremost religious scholar with a reputation for independent thought, Taleghani spent most of his life in Tehran, where his outspoken opposition to the Pahlavi rulers resulted in his spending many years behind bars. There, with an inordinate amount of time for reflection and talk, he worked ceaselessly, writing his most notbale works and lecturing he fellow inmates. The prisons were packed with political dissenters, and many who have figured prominently in revolutionary Iran received theri schooling in Islam fro Taleghani.

Christian Martyrs under Islam explains how Christians across the early Islamic caliphate slowly converted to the faith of the Arab conquerors and how small groups of individuals rejected this faith through dramatic acts of resistance, including apostasy and blasphemy. Using previously untapped sources in a range of Middle Eastern languages, Christian Sahner introduces an unknown group of martyrs who were executed at the hands of Muslim officials between the seventh and ninth centuries CE. Found in places as diverse as Syria, Spain, Egypt, and Armenia, they include an alleged descendant of Muhammad who converted to Christianity, high-ranking Christian secretaries of the Muslim state who viciously insulted the Prophet, and the children of mixed marriages between Muslims and Christians. Sahner argues that Christians never experienced systematic persecution under the early caliphs, and indeed, they remained the largest portion of the population in the greater Middle East for centuries after the Arab conquest. Still, episodes of ferocious violence contributed to the spread of Islam within Christian societies, and memories of this bloodshed played a key role in shaping Christian identity in the new Islamic empire. Christian Martyrs under Islam examines how violence against Christians ended the age of porous religious boundaries and laid the foundations for more antagonistic Muslim-Christian relations in the centuries to come.
