Book excerpt: There are planets not meant to be colonized by humans. For three decades they will sleep, while their great colonial starship transports them to what is believed to be the perfect world. Their ship is state-of-the-art and totally automatic, allowing the passengers to remain in suspended animation for most of the journey. When they wake, they expect to find a virgin planet, unspoiled by the hands of man - a world where they can pursue happiness in a safe and free environment. The naive colonists from Earth have a different reality to face. Readers Favorites AL CLARK (Book One) Literary Review ★★★★★ by Paul F. Johnson Al Clark by Jonathan G. Meyer grabs the readers attention from the first page. One of my favorite genres is science fiction, above all, space opera. I found Al Clark to be space opera and more. I call it space adventure. The author has created a strong, believable set of characters, particularly the First Six. The story plot is strong and steady with several well designed twists, leaving a true space opera and space adventure fan expectantly waiting to turn the next page. I strongly recommend this book for those that enjoy good sci-fi. Good story. Book excerpt: On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest’s lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say—and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return. But young John Redlantern will break the laws of Eden, shatter the Family and change history. He will abandon the old ways, venture into the Dark…and discover the truth about their world. Already remarkably acclaimed in the UK, Dark Eden is science fiction as literature; part parable, part powerful coming-of-age story, set in a truly original alien world of dark, sinister beauty--rendered in prose that is at once strikingly simple and stunningly inventive.

Book Moscow the Fourth Rome

  • Author : Katerina Clark
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

Download or read book Moscow the Fourth Rome written by Katerina Clark and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early sixteenth century, the monk Filofei proclaimed Moscow the "Third Rome." By the 1930s, intellectuals and artists all over the world thought of Moscow as a mecca of secular enlightenment. In Moscow, the Fourth Rome, Katerina Clark shows how Soviet officials and intellectuals, in seeking to capture the imagination of leftist and anti-fascist intellectuals throughout the world, sought to establish their capital as the cosmopolitan center of a post-Christian confederation and to rebuild it to become a beacon for the rest of the world. Clark provides an interpretative cultural history of the city during the crucial 1930s, the decade of the Great Purge. She draws on the work of intellectuals such as Sergei Eisenstein, Sergei Tretiakov, Mikhail Koltsov, and Ilya Ehrenburg to shed light on the singular Zeitgeist of that most Stalinist of periods. In her account, the decade emerges as an important moment in the prehistory of key concepts in literary and cultural studies today-transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, and world literature. By bringing to light neglected antecedents, she provides a new polemical and political context for understanding canonical works of writers such as Brecht, Benjamin, Lukacs, and Bakhtin. Moscow, the Fourth Rome breaches the intellectual iron curtain that has circumscribed cultural histories of Stalinist Russia, by broadening the framework to include considerable interaction with Western intellectuals and trends. Its integration of the understudied international dimension into the interpretation of Soviet culture remedies misunderstandings of the world-historical significance of Moscow under Stalin.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize An extraordinary, “playful, moving, and wholly remarkable” (The Guardian) coming-of-age novel filled with myth and magic from one of England's greatest living writers. An introspective young boy, Joseph Coppock is trying to make sense of the world. Living alone in an old house, he spends his time reading comic books, collecting birds’ eggs, and playing with marbles. When one day a rag-and-bone man called Treacle Walker appears on a horse and cart, offering a cure-all medicine, a mysterious friendship develops and the young boy is introduced to a world beyond his wildest imagination. Luminous, evocative, and sparely told, Treacle Walker is a stunning fusion of myth, folklore, and the stories we tell ourselves.
