Book Business Road Warriors

  • Author : Eddie Morgan

  • Pages : 86 pages

Download or read book Business Road Warriors written by Eddie Morgan and published by Realization Press. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Business Road Warriors is a photo essay of the people, places and stories of the individuals encountered during business travel in the late 1980's. It includes images of the crew and fellow travelers (many with their personal stories), as well as the terminals, the equipment, and the support personal required to make it all work. The late eighties was a time before the common use of the internet and email. A vast majority of people did not have cell phones (no one had smart phones) and few had computers in their homes. Vendor/customer relationships were primarily face to face. Business travel was a fact of life for many industries, as face to face relationships were the preferred way to communicate with customers and prospects. This book includes images of terminals, equipment, the workers and the crew who made the system function. In addition, it includes images of some fellow travelers and the personal stories of the crew and the travelers. The pilots and flight attendants were professionals who were the face of the industry to the travelling public. They each had a story, and many shared those stories in this book. In addition to the pilots and the flight attendants there was an army of essential workers who made the system work, but were almost invisible to many travelers. Airplanes themselves were changing at a rapid rate during this time. The older planes were basically flown manually by highly skilled pilots. The newer ones contained avionics and were, to a much greater degree, computer controlled. Fellow travelers were fascinating. Many shared personal information about themselves with a total stranger. These unsubstantiated vignettes are sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, personal trials and sometimes dreams of passengers sitting next to them. Personal details were often volunteered to perfect strangers sitting next to them in an airplane. While we rush headlong into the future, a nostalgic look into where we were three decades ago can be a rest.

Book excerpt: PLANESPOTTING IN THE 80s is a photographic and textual exploration of airliner activity in the 1980s, with particular emphasis on Philadelphia International Airport and the region. This exciting book includes images and descriptions of airlines and aircraft that have long since vanished from operation. Names like Eastern, Allegheny Commuter, TWA, Piedmont, and even Pan Am evoke memories from years past. PHL itself has grown to become today "s hive of activity for domestic and international operations on a major scale. The reality of today "s world has dampened the ability to access the vantage points once enjoyed by spotters at airports around the globe. The enthusiasm and solidarity of spotters, however, remains strong, and that spirit can be felt throughout the pages of this publication. Anyone who has an interest in aviation, an interest in travel, or an association with the region will certainly enjoy this step back in time.

Book excerpt: Though we routinely take to the air, for many of us flying remains a mystery. Few of us understand the how and why of jetting from New York to London in six hours. How does a plane stay in the air? Can turbulence bring it down? What is windshear? How good are the security checks? Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular column, "Ask the Pilot," unravels the secrets and tells you all there is to know about the strange and fascinating world of commercial flight. He offers: A nuts and bolts explanation of how planes fly Insights into safety and security Straight talk about turbulence, air traffic control, windshear, and crashes The history, color, and controversy of the world's airlines The awe and oddity of being a pilot The poetry and drama of airplanes, airports, and traveling abroad In a series of frank, often funny explanations and essays, Smith speaks eloquently to our fears and curiosities, incorporating anecdotes, memoir, and a life's passion for flight. He tackles our toughest concerns, debunks conspiracy theories and myths, and in a rarely heard voice dares to return a dash of romance and glamour to air travel.

Book The Textual Life of Airports

Download or read book The Textual Life of Airports written by Christopher Schaberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about airport stories. It is about common narratives of airports that circulate in everyday life, and about the secret stories of airports-the strange or hidden narratives that do not always fit into standard ideas of these in-between places. Tales of near disaster, endless delays, dramatic weather shifts, a lost bag that suddenly appears-such stories are familiar accounts of a place that seems to thrive on and recycle its own mythologies. The Textual Life of Airports shows how airports demand to be read. Working at the intersection of literary studies and cultural theory, Schaberg tracks airport stories in American literature, as well as in a range of visual texts (film, airport art, magazine illustrations). It accounts for how airports appear in literature throughout the twentieth-century, while also examining the influx of airport figures in markedly post-9/11 literature and culture. These literary and cultural representations work together to form "the textual life of airports."
