Book Southeast Asia Cruising Guide

Download or read book Southeast Asia Cruising Guide written by Elaine Morgan and published by Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson Ltd. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only guide to Southeast Asia that covers the entire length and breadth of a region frequently visited by round-the-world sailors, many of whom leave Australia to head west. This 2008 edition concentrates on the most frequented routes and includes the most popular stops. There are hundreds of possible anchorages, the most popular of which are usefully summarised in tables. Introductory sections cover planning and the last part of the book deals with more general topics including advice on provisioning and the problems that are often faced by cruisers.Stephen Morgan and Elaine Davies first arrived in the region over 30 years ago. They work in Hong Kong- Stephen Davies as Director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and Elaine Morgan as a writer and editor. While this pilot is aimed at yachtsmen and indeed was surveyed from the Davies/Morgan yacht, it is just as relevant to the commercial or military mariner. The part of the world described in this work is one of the most interesting on our planet. Culturally, scenically, climatically and commercially- it has everything. This excellent book - now in its second edition, describes it all very enticingly.Set to the usual high standard of the Imray pilots that precede it, this one is spiced up by the wit and anecdotes the authors are so good at.

Book Far East Asia a Pictorial Guide

Download or read book Far East Asia a Pictorial Guide written by Bob Gibbons and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-06 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Far East may not have great swathes of desert or arid bush, but it does have a mix of mountain ranges. Both the Korean peninsula and Japan are in fact mostly hill country. Taiwan is also more mountainous than may be imagined, although nowhere across the Far East do the peaks rise to the heights of the Himalaya. Nature seekers can find solitude in limited corners of the Far East, with many National Parks set among the need for industrialisation, such is the dynamism of development. The island of Borneo offers wildlife lovers a lot of variety, with exciting fauna and flora to discover. The Philippines have as much diversity as anywhere, with a Spanish and American historical background. Much of the Far East is very well visited by Asian tourists, but surprisingly places like South Korea are not that commonly explored. North Korea remains an enigma that few can reach, although there are a couple of options most of the time despite the bad press. Japan, despite its high cost of living, is popular with students and well-heeled visitors and has a rich history to discover. Taiwan and Macao are not familiar to western visitors, although Hong Kong is on many stopover routes. The island of Borneo, which comprises Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, is another top destination for jungle and wildlife adventures. The Philippines should be a top destination - its beaches are some of the best in the region, but it does have a slightly shady image. The countryside is spectacular, with volcanoes, terraced hillsides and warm balmy retreats. Although modernisation has engulfed much of the Far East, it is the great cultural impact of Buddhism, Shinto and Taoism that have shaped its history, bringing a vast array of shrines, temples and historic remains. The people are a vast melting pot, encompassing Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Indians, Indonesian Animists, a smattering of Europeans and even Russians. There are wide variations in the traditions and cultures among the main groups - Chinese, Japanese and Koreans - that a first-time visitor might not immediately grasp. Like most of Asia, the Far East is evolving fast, as the people have an insatiable desire for the modern. It is set to become a leading region of the world, with burgeoning economies and technical innovation. This book is divided into the countries of the region excluding the most important influence on the region, China, which is covered in another book. Some of the images date back to the 1980s, an era of great adventure, others are more recent. The Far East may not have the same lure of adventure as Africa or South Asia, but because it remains generally less explored by travellers, it holds an engrossing fascination for the curious.
