Book Aircraft Inflight Ice Detectors and Icing Rate Measuring Instruments

Download or read book Aircraft Inflight Ice Detectors and Icing Rate Measuring Instruments written by AC-9C Aircraft Icing Technology Committee and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides information regarding ice detector technology and design. The SAE document AS5498 provides detailed information regarding the requirements, specifications, qualification, and certification of icing detection systems. This document is not meant to replace AS5498, but to enhance it by considering unique aspects of sensing technology and, in particular, those that may not be certificated at the time of this revision. To that end, an effort has been made not to duplicate information contained in AS5498. Icing rate information is included where applicable. The primary application is associated with ice forming on the leading edges of airfoils and inlets while the aircraft is in flight. Information related to detection of ice over cold fuel tanks and icing at low-velocity operation is included. The material is primarily applicable to fixed-wing aircraft. Unique requirements for engine inlets and rotorcraft are also provided. AIR4367 needed updates to incorporate new technologies and to align with the significant updates to AS5498.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides information regarding ice detector technology, and design and operating requirements. Icing rate information is included where applicable. The primary application is associated with ice forming on the leading edges of airfoils and inlets with significant forward velocities. Information related to detection of ice at static conditions, ice over cold fuel tanks, and icing at low velocity operation is also included. The material is primarily applicable to transport and light aircraft. Special consideration for rotorcraft is appended separately.

Book Response of Cloud Microphysical Instruments to Aircraft Icing Conditions

Download or read book Response of Cloud Microphysical Instruments to Aircraft Icing Conditions written by Morton Glass and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of passes on 6 December 1979 through multilayered-supercooled stratiform and stratocumulus clouds by the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory's instrumented C-130E cloud physics research aircraft is used to evaluate a Rosemount Ice Detector. The response of the detector to icing conditions is compared with measurements from a J-W liquid water content meter and the Knollenberg Axial Scattering Spectrometer Probe (ASSP). A procedure to adjust for zero drift of the J-W instrument is developed. Comparison of liquid water measurements from the J-W and from the ASSP indicate that these data are highly correlated and similar in magnitude. A procedure for extracting useful information from the Rosemount Ice detector has been developed. The icing conditions in the cloud systems studied are typical of the range of conditions in winter stratiform clouds. Liquid water (LWC) values of 0.3 g/cu m and median volume diameters of 15 micrometers were most frequently observed. The results of the analysis show that the Rosemount Ice Detector is a sensitive indicator of the fluctuations of liquid water in clouds with LWC not exceeding 0.8 g/cu m -3.

Book Field Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System

Download or read book Field Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System written by Paul Tattelman and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosemont ice detectors were installed at four New England locations to collect information on their response to icing near the earth's surface. Data were collected for 11 icing events during the 1979-80 winter season. These included, for each icing event, the recorded output o the ice detectors, the mass, thickness and physical properties o the ice on a control cylinder, and meteorological conditions pertinent to the field tests. The data were analyzed to determine how accurately ice amounts on the cylinder could be estimated from the output of the ice detectors. Results indicate that the detector would be excellent for objectively estimating icing amounts on a cylinder for in-cloud icing on mountaintops. A slight modification and further testing is necessary to best use the instrument to estimate icing amounts from freezing rain or drizzle. A method for making standardized observations of the mass and thickness of ice on cylinders with varying diameters is also presented. (Author).

Book Climatic Chamber Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System

Download or read book Climatic Chamber Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System written by Paul Tattelman and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic chamber tests of an off-the-shelf ice detection system manufactured by Rosemount Engineering Company were conducted to evaluate its capability to determine ice amounts measured on cylinders. One-hour tests were run for a variety of windspeeds, temperatures, and icing conditions. Some longer duration tests, up to 17 hours, were also performed. Analysis of the data indicates that the Rosemount system is highly correlated with the mass of ice measured on the cylinders when the data are divided into freezing rain and rime icing events. The Rosemount system is also highly correlated with ice thickness, but without the pronounced dependence upon the type of icing. In the light of positive test results, a method is proposed for utilizing the Rosemount system for observing ice accretion at the earth's surface. (Author).
