Book excerpt: This invaluable, well-illustrated book presents a carefully crafted, step-by-step programme which teaches the complete novice air pistol shooter how to attain a high level of marksmanship. Book Webley Air Pistols

Download or read book Webley Air Pistols written by Gordon Bruce and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a long history of involvement in the design and production of firearms, the Birmingham firm of Webley & Scott is probably better known to the general public for its manufacture of airguns than for any other product. Until now, there has been no published reference that concentrates exclusively on the history and development of Webley air pistols. This book has been prepared to offer a comprehensive guide for all those interested in the subject and who appreciate the traditional British craftsmanship entailed. It embraces all models based upon the same initial patent, which were produced between the years 1924 and 1999, commencing with the original 'Mark 1' and progressing through twelve other models to the final 'Webley Tempest' introduced more than half a century later. In addition to the pistols themselves, there are sections of the book relating to pellet styles and various shooting accessories produced by the same company. The whole work is divided into twenty-two sections, the text being accompanied throughout with 226 original photographs and over 70 line illustrations, each of which has been prepared by the author.

Book excerpt: Air-powered guns offer many useful possibilities for informed shooters. First, we can mail-order both airguns and their ammunition, which don't fall under the jurisdiction of BATF (check your local regulations). Airguns also tend to be quiet - a useful advantage if low-impact hunting is necessary. The right choice will have adequate power for small game, and possibly even deer. From here it gets better since uninformed people will lump them all together as simple BB guns. In fact, airguns still maintain social acceptance not only domestically, but also around the globe. As a result, sophisticated designs have evolved with outstanding performance. Some are even sold in head-turning calibers like 9mm, .45, or .50-caliber! On a smaller and more affordable scale, we can also improve our all-around shooting skills while having some low-cost fun. Since an understanding of the various power-plants is essential, this thorough and complete guide will provide the necessary information for its purchase and use.

Excerpt: 10 metre air pistol is an Olympic shooting event governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). It is similar to 10 metre air rifle in that it is shot with 4.5 mm (or .177) caliber air guns at a distance of 10 metres (11 yards), and the programme consists of 60 shots within 105 minutes for men, and 40 shots within 75 minutes for women. It is also similar to 50 metre pistol despite the shorter distance and the use of air guns, and most top-level male shooters compete in both events. There are some restrictions on the pistol, and it must be operated by one hand only from a standing, unsupported position. The shooter decides his or her own tempo as long as the maximum time is not exceeded, but in the final round for the top shooters, separate commands are given for each shot so that the audience may follow the progress of the standings. The major competitions are the Olympic Games every four years and the ISSF World Shooting Championships every four years. In addition, the event is included in the ISSF World Cup and in continental championships, as well as in many other international and national competitions. It is an indoor sport, and on the highest level electronic targets are used instead of the traditional paper targets. The air pistol target is 17x17 cm with concentric score zones, the...

Book American Pistol Shooting

Download or read book American Pistol Shooting written by William D. Frazer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate book for the gun enthusiast and the historian alike, American Pistol Shooting is a textbook of old-world techniques for successful shooting. The author Major William D. Frazer was an incredibly accomplished marksman in his day, earning the US Army’s Distinguished Marksman badge in 1922. Almost entirely self taught, Frazer knew that the world needed a comprehensive book on pistol shooting technique, and he was the man to write that book. Brilliantly detailed with sections on caring for your pistols, trigger control, defensive shooting and quick drawing, and even shooting psychology, there is something here for everyone. First published in the early 1900s, almost all of American Pistol Shooting is still relevant today, even despite the massive technological changes that have swept across the face of the gun industry. The techniques described will help anyone up their game and zero in on their aim. Whether practicing alone in the backyard or practicing at the shooting range, Major William D. Frazer’s book is a must have for anyone interested in the sport of shooting and the history of the gun. Book The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It

Download or read book The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It written by Walter Winans and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now no use learning revolver shooting. That form of pistol is obsolete except in the few instances where it survives for target shooting, or is carried for self-defence; just as flintlock muskets even now survive in out-of-the-way parts of the world. If a man tries to defend himself with a revolver against another armed with an automatic pistol he is at a great disadvantage. The automatic is more accurate than a revolver, as the “blow-back” does not vary as much as does the escape of gas past the cylinder in a revolver. The bullet in the revolver has to jump into the cylinder, whereas in the automatic it is already fitted up against the rifling, before being fired. The single-shot pistol is the most accurate of any, there being no escape of gas. The automatic has not only a much longer range than the revolver (although the popular idea that it can be shot accurately at a thousand yards or more is nonsense) but it cocks itself instead of having to be cocked by the thumb, or trigger finger. Cocking by trigger-pull is such a strain on, not only the trigger finger, but the whole hand, that, after a few shots, good shooting cannot be made. I won all my rapid-firing revolver competitions using the single action and cocking with the thumb, as this rested my trigger finger. With the automatic, cocking is unnecessary and, with its lighter recoil, good scores in rapid-firing are very much easier to make. The penetration of the nickel-coated automatic bullet propelled by its big charge of nitro powder is very great. A man brought me a “pistol-proof” cuirass to test; I put a bullet at twelve yards clean through it and then through two “bullet proof” ones, placed one behind the other. (I used a regulation U. S. .45 Automatic pistol.) This was before the war. The inventor was disappointed. He had experimented only with revolvers shooting soft leaden bullets and these his cuirass had stopped. Unfortunately, in its present comparatively imperfect development, the automatic is the most dangerous firearm of all pistols for a novice to handle. The long barrel of a rifle can be struck aside if a beginner swings it round and points it at the instructor or a nearby spectator, but the short barrel of a pistol is easily pointed at and with difficulty brushed aside by the unfortunate person standing near a “brandishing” and “flourishing” man who is learning to shoot. In spite of all warnings even those who ought to know better do this swinging about. In fact, it is the recognized way of handling a pistol; according to reporters, they always say So and So “was brandishing a pistol” if he happens to be armed.
