Book excerpt: These proceedings are based upon the review lectures, the re search talks and the accompanying discussion from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "The Dynamical and Chemical Coupling of the Neutral and Ionized Atmosphere" held at Spatind, Norway April 12-22, 1977. In recent years, in spite of the many subdivisions of atmospher ic physics it has become clear that a complete understanding of the subject matter requires an interdisciplinary effort of the scien tists working on a variety of atmospheric phenomena. This Advanced Study Institute was organized in order to meet this demand. A number of eminent scientists were invited to review the major subfields in atmospheric physics and expose the areas where the coupling between the neutral and ionized atmosphere is evident. These review papers were supported by current research results. However, the material covered here is by no means complete con sidering the range of subject matter covered by the title. Advanced Research Insti tute on Nonequilibrium Processes in Partially Ionized Gases was held at Acquafredda di Maratea during 4-17 June 1989. The Institute considered the interconnections between scattering and transport theories and modeling of nonequilibrium systems generated by electrical discharges, emphasizing the importance of microscopic processes in affecting the bulk properties of plasmas. The book tries to reproduce these lines. In particular several contributions describe scattering cross sections involving electrons interacting with atoms and molecules in both ground and excited states (from theoretical and experimental point of view), of energy transfer processes as well as reactive ones involving excited molecules colliding with atoms and molecules as well as with metallic surfaces. Other contributions deal with the basis of transport theories (Boltzmann and Monte Carlo methods) for describing the bulk properties of non equilibrium plasmas as well as with the modeling of complicated systems emphasizing in particular the strong coupling between the Boltzmann equation and excited state kinetics. Finally the book contains several contributions describing applications in different fields such as Excimer Lasers, Negative Ion Production, RF Discharges, Plasma Chemistry, Atmospheric Processes and Physics of Lamps. Book excerpt: The atmosphere can apparently be ionized to such a degree that the ground wave is disturbed, as a result of, for example, a nuclear event, and ionizing radiation of sufficient intensity to overcome the ion-ion recombination processes may cause the ions to accumulate near the surface of the ground. Gamma radiation from the fallout of a nuclear weapon may produce such ionization for a considerable time after the nuclear event. The problem is similar to that of terrestrial radio wave propagation via the ionosphere, except that in the former case the ionization has a maximum near the surface of the ground and decreases exponentially with altitude. In other words, we have an upside down ionosphere to consider. A new theoretical approach to such ground wave problems based on methods of numerical analysis has been developed for computer application. The computer computation concept is discussed and sample computations based on the fallout model profile are presented. A particular fallout model based on data given in the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s handbook on “The Effects of Nuclear Weapons” is considered in some detail, and the effect of an ionization profile (ion number density as a function of altitude) on the propagation of the ground wave is ascertained. A physically possible but not likely extra attenuation of 12 dB at 100 km distance is noted.
