Book Ain t No Whistle on This Here Train A Blowin

Download or read book Ain t No Whistle on This Here Train A Blowin written by John W Work and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An African-American Trilogy features three distinct stories based on historical figures. The first, "My Name Is Ida B. Wells," describes the late 19th- and early 20th-century battles forged by the newspaperwoman against racial discrimination, and the growing scourge of lynching around the nation, and especially in Memphis, Tennessee. A young reporter idolizes Ida and seeks to emulate her. In fear of her life from an enraged white mob, Ida escapes her home just hours before a mob burns it to the ground. The second historical fiction story is "Tulsa, 1921: The Granddaddy of American Race Riots." Two of the colored millionaires in Tulsa, Oklahoma, O.W. Gurley and J.B. Stradford, were business competitors in real estate. They decided to partner in building the finest hotel in Tulsa. Never dreaming their plans would evoke animosity from the white community, the hotel plans were put on hold. A seemingly innocent incident involving an elevator ride shared by a colored man and a white woman set off the worst race riot in American history. "When Miss Anderson Sang at the Met" is the final story. Set in 1955, it tells of a young man who simply must hear the great Marian Anderson perform at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, marking the first time an African-American artist would perform at the Met. John W. Work IV, Ph.D., has been a university professor of economics, a corporate executive, and most recently was a senior principal in a New York City-based management consulting firm. He resides with his wife in New York City, where he is an author and professional futures trader. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/JohnWWorkIV

Book Sterling A Brown

Download or read book Sterling A Brown written by Joanne V. Gabbin and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sterling A. Brown's achievement and influence in the field of American literature and culture are unquestionably significant. His poetry has been translated into Spanish, French, German, and Russian and has been read in literary circles throughout the world. He is also one of the principal architects of black criticism. His critical essays and books are seminal works that give an insider's perspective of literature by and about blacks. Leopold Sedar Senghor, who became familiar with Brown's poetry and criticism in the 1920s and 1930s, called him "an original militant of Negritude, a precursor of our movement." Yet Joanne V. Gabbin's book, originally published in 1985, remains the only study of Brown's work and influence. Gabbin sketches Brown's life, drawing on personal interviews and viewing his achievements as a poet, critic, and cultural griot. She analyzes in depth the formal and thematic qualities of his poetry, revealing his subtle adaptation of song forms, especially the blues. To articulate the aesthetic principles Brown recognized in the writings of black authors, Gabbin explores his identification of the various elements that have come together to create American culture.

Book The GHOST of HOMER LUSTA

Download or read book The GHOST of HOMER LUSTA written by BOB TAYLOR and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confederate soldier Homer Lusta returns to Earth 150 years after the Civil War, the War Between the States, or as Homer would say, the War of Northern Aggression. He remains invisible as he searches for an author to write the "real story" of that war. Finally Homer selects "Old Bob," materializes himself, and convinces Bob to write the story according to his memory. Homer's adaptation is reasonably accurate and loaded with "Homer humor" as he recalls his endeavors to save the South and protect underage brother, Lack, who illicitly has sneaked, early on, into the battlefield. The boys are deceived by a corrupt gang of Rebel deserters into thinking the War is over. Unknowingly, they join these renegades, but soon realize they are traitors involved in iniquitous activity. The boys decide to right this wrong. They search out and inform appropriate Rebel officers. Now having become heroes, the boys return home to accolades few in that war-torn land could ever imagine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is African American literary art? Is it functional, or propaganda, or is it art for art's sake? What are the responsibilities of African American writers to their art forms, to themselves, and to their audiences? And what are the responsibilities of the audiences? Who shall judge it, and by what criteria shall it be judged?" "In African American Literary Criticism, 1773 to 2000, Hazel Arnett Ervin has assembled 60 critical statements that address these questions, ranging from public addresses to literary manifestos and credos, letters, journal entries, interviews, reviews, and studies by thinkers who have analyzed and evaluated literature and developed theory. Authors include W. E. B. Du Bois, Charles Chesnutt, Langston Hughes, Ann Petry, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Amiri Baraka, Toni Morrison, Houston Baker, Henry Louis Gates, Alice Walker, bell hooks, and many others. Each statement is preceded by a short headnote annotating the writer's thesis and setting the tone for critical reading and thinking; following each statement is a list of sources for further study on the topic." "For scholars, students, and critics who are interested in ongoing discussions not only about the function of art, the role of the writer, and the artistic responsibility of the audience, but also about the epistemology, aesthetics, and methodology within a vibrant literary tradition, this reader is an essential source."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Time out of Mind

Download or read book The Time out of Mind written by Ian Bell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the 1970s, Bob Dylan’s position as the pre-eminent artist of his generation was assured. The 1975 album Blood on the Tracks seemed to prove, finally, that an uncertain age had found its poet. Then Dylan faltered. His instincts, formerly unerring, deserted him. in the 1980s, what had once appeared unthinkable came to pass: the “voice of a generation” began to sound irrelevant, a tale told to grandchildren.Yet in the autumn of 1997, something remarkable happened. Having failed to release a single new song in seven long years, Dylan put out the equivalent of two albums in a single package. in the concluding volume of his ground- breaking study, ian Bell explores the unparalleled second act in a quintessentially american career. it is a tale of redemption, of an act of creative will against the odds, and of a writer who refused to fade away.Time Out of Mind is the story of the latest, perhaps the last, of the many Bob Dylans.
