Download or read book Ahn s Third Latin Book Classic Reprint written by P. Henn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ahn's Third Latin Book Tjie present volume is the third of a Latin series which has been undertaken With the view of facilitating the study of the Latin language. In the preparation of this Third Latin Book the author's main object has been to provide a full course in Syntax and Prose Composition. The points which have received particular attention, and in stating which great pains has been taken, are to describe clearly and accurately, in language as plain as possible, the actual uses of syntactical forms, with abundance of illustration both in Latin and English, and, withal, to direct the pupil's attention first to that which most needs to be learned. Unencumbered with burden some detail. To enable the teacher to do this etficiently a careful distinction of the contents of the book by the use of various styles of type has been made throughout. Accordingly, the practice has been followed to present in the largest type principles so vitally im portant, that, in general outline, they should be grasped by every scholar, before the separate points (which are printed in smaller type) are taken up and discussed in detail. In using this book, the pupil should be required to commit to memory the Special Voca bulary preceding each exercise. This is of the first importance since words once given are not repeated in subsequent vocabularies. It should, however, be borne in mind that any word whose meaning cannot be recalled may be looked up in the General Vocabularies at the end of the book. Book Ahn s First Latin Latin Book

Download or read book Ahn s First Latin Latin Book written by P. Henn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ahn's First Latin Latin Book Special attention is invited to the following remarks explanatory of the system of instruction adopted in this Latin Course, and particularly in the present volume, the First Latin Book. Competent and very experienced authorities on the study of Latin have repeatedly adverted to the fact that the custom of tasking the beginner with a great mass of grammatical detail, introducing even scientific etymology and comparative philology into a mere school-book, must be considered a serious burden and harm to a young learner. Less of theoretical completeness and accuracy, and more of sound practical knowledge, and at the same time a greater familiarity with the classic authors, is the tendency of our time especially in America, and it is with due attention to these views and aims that the present Course has been prepared. The main object of the First Latin Book is twofold: first, to provide ample means for practice in Pronunciation, and secondly, to enable a beginner to fix the Declensions thoroughly in his memory, to learn their usage by translating simple sentences as soon as he commences the study of the language, and to accumulate gradually a store of useful words. Without entering into the discussion as to the best method of pronouncing Latin, it may be permitted to urge the great advantage and importance of knowing the phonetic system, either Roman or Continental. As this is an accomplishment which can only be taught orally and acquired by practice, the First Latin Book contains in its introductory pages a systematic collection of reading-lessons -exhibiting Latin words of every-day use, with their meanings, and illustrating at the same time Accent, Division into Syllables, and Quantity - which, in consequence of their practical arrangement, may be used with equal advantage for teaching either the Roman or the Continental Pronunciation. Closely based upon this part of the book, and possessing its chief features, are the Reading-Charts, which will be found of great service in class-instruction, even to those perhaps who think it most advisable "to leave Latin pronunciation as it is."
