Book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands written by Max Quanchi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Seas, as this region used to be called, conjured up images of adventure, belles and savages, romance and fabulous fortunes, but the long voyages of discovery and exploration of the vast Pacific Ocean were really an exercise in amazing logistics, navigation, hard grit, shipwreck and pure luck. The motivations were scientific and geographic, but at the same time nationalistic and materialistic. A series on global exploration and discovery would not be complete without this book by Quanchi and Robson. It is ambitious and informative and includes the familiar names of Laperouse, Bougainville, Cook and Dampier, as well as the intriguing stories of the Bounty Mutiny, scurvy, and the mysterious Northwest Passage, Terra Australis Ignotia and Davis Land. There are entries on first contacts, ships, navigational instruments, mapping, and botany. The scene is carefully set in the introduction, the chronology spans several centuries, and the extensive bibliography offers a guide to further reading. There are more than just dry facts in this book. It has a whiff of salt air, the clash of empires, cross-cultural beach encounters and personal adventure.

  • Publisher : Campus Verlag
  • Release : 2013-05
  • ISBN : 3593398729

Download or read book The Fiction of America written by Susanne Hamscha and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fiction of America juxtaposes classic literature of the American Renaissance with twentieth-century popular culture--pairing, for instance, Ralph Waldo Emerson with Finding Nemo, Walt Whitman with Spiderman, and Hester Prynne with Madonna--to investigate how the "Americanness" of American culture constitutes itself in the interplay of the cultural imaginary and performance. Conceptualizing "America" as a transhistorical practice, Susanne Hamscha reveals disruptive, spectral moments in the narrative of "America," which confront American culture with its inherent inconsistencies.

Book Ahab

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brad Huestis
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-05-15
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Ahab written by Brad Huestis and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrilling hockey? Check. Coming of age story? Check. Love interest? Check. Military connection? Check. Foreign setting? Check. A powerful story with hidden depths? Check and check! Ahab checks every single box and will stay with you long after you finish it. When Corporal Will Foley, a young U.S. Army paratrooper, is floored by life his hockey-wired brain does what it has been trained to do-get up and get back in the action! But it's just not that easy. Will escapes the monotony and pain of rehab by cheering for his home-town Bruins, and as he fights to save his military career, he finds safe harbor at the local rink. Hockey keeps Will afloat as he struggles to come to terms with his slacker roommate, his sexy girlfriend, and his hard-boiled Boston P.D. father. The story's Bavarian settings-including Munich's legendary Oktoberfest, Grafenwöhr's iconic water tower, and Weiden's raucous hockey arena-are vivid and unforgettable. This remarkable yarn grew out of the author's love of hockey, soldiers, and storytelling. Told from the heart, it's as riveting as a breakaway and as intense as a bench-clearing brawl, while still managing to go beyond being a thrilling hockey adventure by confronting tough, controversial issues head-on. Readers who fell for the brutal honesty of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk will appreciate the unflinching description of Army life, while puck-heads who loved the food, fun, and excitement of Playing for Pizza will revel in the colorful portrayal of Bavarian hockey, food and culture.

Book Trading Futures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Powell
  • Publisher : Pan Macmillan
  • Release : 2016-03-10
  • ISBN : 150980644X
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Trading Futures written by Jim Powell and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'With his gallows humour and observational wit, Jim Powell gives us a vivid portrait of a man in meltdown.' Daily Mail When I was small, my mother showed me how to grow a carrot from a carrot. She filled a jam jar with water, cut the top off a carrot, ran a cocktail stick horizontally through the stub and suspended it over the jar, just touching the water. In time, roots sprouted, and when they were long enough and strong enough, the plant was translated to the garden and new carrots grew. This was one of the many exciting ways in which I was prepared for adult life. This is Matthew Oxenhay at sixty: a stranger to his wife, an embarrassment to his children, and failed former contender for the top job at his City firm. Seizing on his birthday party as an opportunity to deliver some rather crushing home truths to his assembled loved ones, it seems as though Matthew might have hit rock bottom. The truth, however, is that he has some way to go yet . . . With forensic precision and mordant wit, Matthew unpicks the threads that bind him: a comfortable home in the suburbs, a career spent trading futures and a life that bears little resemblance to the one he imagined for himself at twenty. When he unexpectedly bumps into Anna (the one who got away), the stage is set for an epic unravelling. Darkly funny, Trading Futures forces us to confront how change, like death, is an inevitable fact of life: feared by most, it can transform or overwhelm us. This is a brilliantly observed novel, for fans of works such as John Lanchester's Mr Phillips and On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. It also featured as Radio 4's Book at Bedtime.

Book Resisting Denial Refusing Despair

Download or read book Resisting Denial Refusing Despair written by Walter Brueggemann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays constitutes an attempt to work faithfully at the generative interface of the Bible and our life in the world. This interface variously yields, in our attentiveness, assurances and summons and often empowerment for the work of faith. That work of faith is in our moment urgent, given the force of evil and violence among us, performed by willing thuggery, by dark money, and by the hidden manipulation of social power in hurtful ways. Given such social reality, it is Brueggemann's hope that these pieces may be a source of strength and support for those who resist and refuse those nefarious forces in our midst. Thus he intends that these pieces give voice to the assurance and summons of the gospel, so that we may be able to live differently in the world, differently in ways that are marked by forgiveness, generosity, and hospitality. Such living is in the face of great pressure toward scorekeeping, parsimony, and fearful exclusion. Such living is a way of joy and hope that is on offer nowhere else. It is Brueggemann's intent to contribute as he can to the "hopes that drive us onward," in resistance to "the fears that hold us back."

Book The Fruit of the Vine

Download or read book The Fruit of the Vine written by Carey Ellen Walsh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of viticulture--from planting vines to drinking wine--in Israelite culture is the focus of Walsh's investigation. Viticulture, no less than drinking, marked the social sphere of Israelite practitioners, and so its details were often enlisted to describe social relations in the Hebrew Bible. These features of everyday life offer important clues for the reconstruction of Israelite social history, the literary constructions of the oral transmitters, authors, and redactors and for thematic and theological meanings attached to biblical representations of the vine and wine imagery.
