Book Down Home

Download or read book Down Home written by William Mackey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-01-30 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 after 20 years living in New York City, Engineer, Photographer & Educator William Henry Mackey, Jr. returned to the rural Georgia backwoods where he had been raised. During the 20 years since he had left, the South had undergone drastic changes, from the Civil Rights Era to the technological advances in farming techniques, yet at the same time it remained the same simple place where he had grown up. Mackey proceeded to photograph and interview friends, family and other residents of the area in an effort to document their history and recollections of an era that was fast fading under the onslaught of 'progress'. The result is a fascinating look into the legacy of rural Blacks in coastal Georgia and the political, technological and social changes they underwent during the century since the Emancipation Proclamation.

Book excerpt: Come Back Home is a gripping tale about two young people who become engulfed in the toil of World War II. Walter Wilson meets Abby Walker during the summer of 1943. They fall in love, but there are two huge obstacles that could shatter their romance. First, Abby comes from an upper-class family, whereas Walter is born into the middle class. As a result, Abby's father doesn't want the relationship to blossom. He doesn't believe that Walter is good enough for his daughter and would prefer for her to date someone from the upper class. Abby's father will do what he can to ensure the relationship ceases to exist. Second, the United States has been dragged to war in Europe and the Pacific. Walter is young, patriotic, and naive and wants to fight for his country. This drive to fight overseas certainly has the chance to destroy the love between Abby Walker and Walter Wilson. Timing and circumstances couldn't be worse for Abby and Walter. World War II has wrecked the lives of many people. This is a story about two young people and how they navigate their love for each other during one of the most trying times in history.

Book Stick Together and Come Back Home

Download or read book Stick Together and Come Back Home written by Patrick Lopez-Aguado and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Stick Together and Come Back Home, Patrick Lopez-Aguado examines how what happens inside a prison affects what happens outside of it. Following the experiences of seventy youth and adults as they navigate juvenile justice and penal facilities before finally going back home, he outlines how institutional authorities structure a “carceral social order” that racially and geographically divides criminalized populations into gang-associated affiliations. These affiliations come to shape one’s exposure to both violence and criminal labeling, and as they spill over the institutional walls they establish how these unfold in high-incarceration neighborhoods as well, revealing the insidious set of consequences that mass incarceration holds for poor communities of color.

Book excerpt: Over 2,200 Jokes from America’s favorite live radio show A treasury of hilarity from Garrison Keillor and the cast of public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. A guy walks into a bar. Eight Canada Geese walk into a bar. A termite jumps up on the bar and asks, “Where is the bar tender?” Drum roll. The Sixth Edition of the perennially popular Pretty Good Joke Book is everything the first five were and more. More puns, one-liners, light bulb jokes, knock-knock jokes, and third-grader jokes (have you heard the one about Elvis Parsley?). More religion jokes, political jokes, lawyer jokes, blonde jokes, and jokes in questionable taste (Why did the urologist lose his license? He got in trouble with his peers). More jokes about chickens, relationships, and senior moments (the nice thing about Alzheimer’s is you can enjoy the same jokes again and again). It all started back in 1996, when A Prairie Home Companion fans laughed themselves silly during the first Joke Show. The broadcast was such a hit that it became an almost-annual gagfest. Then fans wanted to read the jokes, share them, and pass them around, and the first Pretty Good Joke Book was born. With over 200 new and updated jokes, the latest edition promises countless giggles, chortles, and guffaws anyone—fans of the radio show or not—will enjoy.

Against the backdrop of Westburn's doomed shipyards, they must confront the prejudices and hate of their society in order to be together. But will their love be enough to overcome the religious and social conflicts that threaten to tear them apart? The Music Room: Set in 1950's Scotland, Tim Ronsard is a student at St. Mary's School, feeling unfulfilled and ready to leave. That is until music teacher Isobel Clieshman arrives, a Protestant in a Catholic school. Despite the age gap, Tim falls for her, but it isn't until five years later when they meet again that their romance blossoms. However, with societal prejudices and personal struggles to overcome, their journey towards happiness is a challenging one. Westburn Blues: Dante Rinaldi, the son of Italian immigrants in Scotland, becomes entrenched in his family's homeland during a stranded summer with his grandfather in World War II Italy. As a young adult, Dante fights with a band of mountain partisans against the fascists. His experiences, including a delayed young love and post-war struggles in Scotland, lead him to cross paths with neglected adolescent Chris McCoull, who finds his own romance and purpose while working for a Greek-owned shipping line. This carefully researched and historically detailed novel depicts the Scottish-Italian experience with a cast of colorful characters, from sympathetic to truly evil.

Book excerpt: This is a portrayal of two plebeian families that lived far into the Appalachian Mountains. The fiery Jasper Burnine family, Caucasian, and The Moon clan, Cherokee, were across from the other on Clear Creek. Surprisingly, they became close. The hot-tempered Burnines became bitter over the ill treatment of The Moon clan. The Moon, the ex-Cherokee warrior, became an enraged madman. Privately, he declared war on those that came to molest his family. The intruders that couldn’t escape his wrath were left as food for the buzzards and foxes. The book has a powerful story. It is fast paced, violent, romantic, bawdy, hard bitten, comical, and haunting. Life was hard in the mountains. Half the children died young. In the new nation there was little law enforcement, so each family stayed on guard. The time, 1790 to 1840, was a period of crisis for the new nation called The United States of America. Would they remain a nation? The British were lurking, waiting for an opening. The Cherokees, beaten in war, saw their land taken as white people came to settle the new continent. The Indians worried over this for years. Would they have to move across the big river to the new country?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1928 in a tent on the shore of Loch Fyne, Argyll, Duncan Williamson (d. 2007) eventually came to be recognized as one of the foremost storytellers in Scotland and the world. Webspinner: Songs, Stories, and Reflections of Duncan Williamson, Scottish Traveller is based on more than a hundred hours of tape-recorded interviews undertaken with him in the 1980s. Williamson tells of his birth and upbringing in the west of Scotland, his family background as one of Scotland’s seminomadic travelling people, his varied work experiences after setting out from home at about age fifteen, and the challenges he later faced while raising a family of his own, living on the road for half the year. The recordings on which the book is based were made by John D. Niles, who was then an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Niles has transcribed selections from his field tapes with scrupulous accuracy, arranging them alongside commentary, photos, and other scholarly aids, making this priceless self-portrait of a brilliant storyteller available to the public. The result is a delight to read. It is also a mine of information concerning a vanished way of life and the place of singing and storytelling in Traveller culture. In chapters that feature many colorful anecdotes and that mirror the spontaneity of oral delivery, readers learn much about how Williamson and other members of his persecuted minority had the resourcefulness to make a living on the outskirts of society, owning very little in the way of material goods but sustained by a rich oral heritage.
