Download or read book Environmental Footprints of Crops written by Subramanian Senthilkannan Muthu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are multiple variants of environmental footprints such as carbon footprint, ecological footprint, water footprint, nitrogen footprint and so on. There are numerous developments in terms of measuring the environmental footprints of various products. Many new indicators are being developed in terms of footprints to measure the environmental performance of various products. The need to measure various environmental footprints of agricultural crops is obvious and does not need any explanation these days when the importance of sustainability is felt so much and being practiced in all industrial sectors, including agriculture. This book presents five interesting chapters pertaining to environmental footprints of crops.

Download or read book Governing Agrobiodiversity written by Regine Andersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant genetic diversity is crucial to the breeding of food crops and is therefore a central precondition for food security. Diverse genetic resources provide the genetic traits required to deal with crop pests and diseases, as well as changing climate conditions. Plant genetic diversity is also essential for traditional small-scale farming, and is therefore an indispensable factor in the fight against poverty. However, the diversity of domesticated plant varieties is disappearing at an alarming rate while interest in the commercial use of genetic resources has increased in line with bio-technologies, followed by demands for intellectual property rights. This important book contributes to our understanding of how international regimes affect the management of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture in developing countries. It identifies entry points to shape a better governance of agrobiodiversity and provides the first comprehensive analysis of how the international agreements pertaining to crop genetic resources affect the management of these vital resources for food security and poverty eradication in developing countries.

Download or read book Access to Plant Genetic Resources and the Equitable Sharing of Benefits written by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and published by Bioversity International. This book was released on 1996 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th session of the FAO Commission on Plant Genetic Resources requested that IPGRI study the feasibility of possible systems for the exchange of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA)1 and the equitable sharing of benefits. The following report is the result of that study. It seeks to provide the Commission with a set of options and their implications and thus to inform international negotiationsconncerning the revision of the International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Tesources. As part of the study process a wide series of consultations was held with major stakeholder groups. A fundamental justification for conserving and characterizing PGRFA is their potential for use in the development of improved crop varieties. These improved varieties are necessary to meet the food needs of a growing population and the demands of changing agro-ecological and social conditions.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the current status of the conservation and use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture throughout the world. It is based on country reports, information gathering processes, regional syntheses, thematic background studies and published scientific literature. It describes the most significant changes that have taken place since the first State of the World report was published in 1998 and describes major continuing gaps and needs. The structure follows that of the first state of the world report with an additional chapter on the contribution of plant genetic resources to food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Download or read book Rights to Plant Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge written by Susette Biber-Klemm and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the means, instruments and institutions to create incentives to promote conservation and sustainable use of traditional knowledge and plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, in the framework of the world trade order. It approaches these topics on a broad basis: it analyses in depth the option to create specific sui generis intellectual property rights of the TRIPS Agreement. It then discusses the ways to support the maintenance of information which cannot be allocated to specific authors, and examines alternative concepts within the trade of traditionally generated information and related products. This book will be of significant interest to those studying and researching biotechnology, plant breeding, genetic resources, intellectual property law and agricultural economics.

Download or read book Plant Conservation written by Alan Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the latest in the People and Plants series, plant conservation is described in the context of livelihoods and development, and ways of balancing the conservation of plant diversity with the use of plants and the environment for human benefit are discussed. A central contention in this book is that local people must be involved if conservation is to be successful. Also examined are ways of prioritizing plants and places for conservation initiatives, approaches to in situ and ex situ conservation, and how to approach problems of unsustainable harvesting of wild plants. Roles for botanists, foresters, sociologists, development workers and others are discussed. This book acts as a unifying text for the series, integrating case studies and methodologies considered in previous volumes and pointing out in a comprehensive, accessible volume the valuable lessons to be learned.
