This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Discontent in the Middle West, 1900-1939 Hicks) during the middle 1g3o's at the University of Wisconsin. At that time, neither the Old Deal nor the New Deal had reached satis factory solutions for the farmers' ills, and the evidence of discontent was apparent on every hand. Since then the three triple-a programs and the second World War have changed the situation materially, and the com ing of the war has supplied a terminal date for our study. What the future may hold in store for the American farmer is by no means clear, but there is much evidence to support the opinion that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats will risk another Populist revolt by withholding the sub sidies that now contribute so heavily to our agricultural income. The center of agricultural discontent during the first four decades of the twentieth century lay in what we have called the western Middle West, or that part of the Middle West which is bounded on the east by Lake Mich igan and the indiana-illinois boundary line. But the economic forces that contributed to the farmers' woes had little respect for state boundaries, so that it has seemed better to use in our title the more inclusive term, Middle West. Even that term, if restricted to the twelve north central states, is hardly adequate, but in common parlance the Middle West has come to include all of the central part of the United States, and thus defined, it suits our purpose reasonably well. Download or read book Crops and Markets Vol 16 written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 16: January 1939 Cash farm income and Government payments to farmers in 1938 are estimated by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics at $7, 632, compared with the revised estimate of $8, 574, for 1937 and with $7, 944, for 1936. The esti mates of income include receipts from sales of farm products, Government payments to farmers during the calendar year, and loans, minus redemptions, on wheat, corn, and cotton. Cash farm income estimates have been prepared annually since 1924 and have ranged from $4, 328, 000, 000 in the depression year 1932 to $10, 000 in 1929. The decline of $942, 000, 000, or 11 percent, in cash farm in come from 1937 to 1938 was due to a decline of 18 percent in income from crops and 9 percent in income from livestock and livestock products. Government payments in 1938 of $482, 000, 000 were 31 percent higher than in 1937, and helped to offset the decline in income from farm marketings.'
