Book Diversifying Food and Diets

Download or read book Diversifying Food and Diets written by Jessica Fanzo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently 868 million people are undernourished and 195 million children under five years of age are stunted. At the same time, over 1 billion people are overweight and obese in both the developed and developing world. Diseases previously associated with affluence, such as cancer, diabetes and cardio-vascular disease, are on the rise. Food system-based approaches to addressing these problems that could enhance food availability and diet quality through local production and agricultural biodiversity often fall outside the traditional scope of nutrition, and have been under-researched. As a consequence, there remains insufficient evidence to support well-defined, scalable agricultural biodiversity interventions that can be linked to improvements in nutrition outcomes. Agricultural biodiversity is important for food and nutritional security, as a safeguard against hunger, a source of nutrients for improved dietary diversity and quality, and strengthening local food systems and environmental sustainability. This book explores the current state of knowledge on the role of agricultural biodiversity in improving diets, nutrition and food security. Using examples and case studies from around the globe, the book explores current strategies for improving nutrition and diets and identifies key research and implementation gaps that need to be addressed to successfully promote the better use of agricultural biodiversity for rural and urban populations and societies in transition.

Book Healthy Agriculture Healthy Nutrition Healthy People

Download or read book Healthy Agriculture Healthy Nutrition Healthy People written by A.P. Simopoulos and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human health depends to a great extent on our nutritionally balanced food supply consistent with the evolutionary aspects of diet to which genes were originally programmed to respond. The publication at hand contains selected papers from the Inaugural Conference Healthy Agriculture, Healthy Nutrition, Healthy People of the World Council on Genetics, Nutrition and Fitness for Health held at Ancient Olympia, Greece, in October 2010. Topics include the relationship between architecture and agriculture, food production systems and urban agriculture, as well as physical activity, nutrition, genetic variation and other determinants of human health. The papers clearly show that optimal nutrition is consistent with ecologically and economically sustainable agriculture, and that there is a need for scientific and political institutions that can integrate research into urban planning and its regulation, agriculture and health care systems. This will contribute to normal development and health throughout the human life cycle, and prevent or delay chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.Scientists working in the fields of medicine, physiology, genetics, nutrition, dietetics, economics, architecture, agriculture as well as scientists and policy makers interested in environmental issues such as agricultural sustainability and climate will find this volume of great interest.

Book Megatrends in Food and Agriculture

Download or read book Megatrends in Food and Agriculture written by Helmut Traitler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights and examines the growing convergence between the food and agricultural industries—the technological, environmental, and consumer-related drivers of this change, and the potential outcomes This is the first book of its kind to connect food and the food industry with agriculture, water resources, and water management in a detailed and thorough way. It brings together a small community of expert authors to address the future of the food industry, agriculture (both for plants and animals), and water—and its role in a world of increasing demands on resources. The book begins by highlighting the role of agriculture in today's food industry from a historical perspective—showing how it has grown over the years. It goes on to examine water management; new ways of plant breeding not only based on genetic modification pathways; and the attention between major crops (soy, corn, wheat) and so-called "orphan crops" (coffee, cocoa, tropical fruits). The book then turns towards the future of the food industry and analyzes major food trends, the new food, and "enough" food; discusses possible new business models for the future food industry; and analyzes the impact that the "internet of everything" will have on agriculture and the food industry. Finally, Megatrends in Food and Agriculture: Technology, Water Use and Nutrition offers scenarios about how agriculture, food, and the food industry might undergo some radical transformations. Assesses the evolution of food production and how we arrived at today's landscape Focuses on key areas of change, driven by both innovation and challenges such as new technologies, the demand for better nutrition, and the management of dwindling resources Highlights the role of better-informed consumers who demand transparency and accountability from producers Is written by industry insiders and academic experts Megatrends in Food and Agriculture: Technology, Water Use and Nutrition is an important resource for food and agriculture industry professionals, including scientists and technicians as well as decision makers, in management, marketing, sales, and regulatory areas, as well as related NGOs.

Book Food Security Nutrition and Sustainability

Download or read book Food Security Nutrition and Sustainability written by Geoffrey Lawrence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the threats of food insecurity loom ever larger, the world faces the sad irony of food shortages in the global South alongside a purported 'obesity epidemic' in the global North. The twin issues of food production and food access are of particular concern in the context of climate change, 'peak oil', biofuels, and land grabs by wealthy nations. Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainability offers critical insights by international scholars, with chapters on global food security, supermarket power, new technologies, and sustainability. The book also assesses the contributions of diet and nutrition research in building socially just and environmentally sustainable food systems and provides policy recommendations to improve the health and environmental status of contemporary agri-food systems. The book features contributions from a range of social science perspectives, including sociology, anthropology, public health and geography, with case study material drawn from throughout the world.

Book Nutrition and Agricultural Development

Download or read book Nutrition and Agricultural Development written by Nevin Scrimshaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past thirteen years, symposia have been held either in South America or in Mexico on subjects of special interest to Latin American scientists. When the opportunity of holding the 14th International Biological Symposium in Guate mala was offered, it was most welcome, especially as the occasion was the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP). With the encouragement of members of the Ford Foundation staff and the National Academy of Sciences, the idea for a symposium on the broad approach to the problem of nutrition was developed by Dr. Moises Behar, the second director of INCAP, 1961-1974, Dr. Nevin Scrimshaw, fIrst director of INCAP, 1949-1961, and members of the INCAP staff. Because the availability of food has become a serious international problem, a discussion of the underlying problems was most timely. INCAP, one of the pioneer and leading institutions in the area of nutrition, has a profound influence on nutrition in Latin America. The meeting was attended by about 300 scientists from more than 20 countries. Because this was the fIrst symposium in this series to be held in Central America, it provided an opportunity to get acquainted with scientists from many of the Central American republics. It was especially rewarding that so many students from the Central American universities attended this meeting.

Book Building the evidence base on the agricultural nutrition nexus

Download or read book Building the evidence base on the agricultural nutrition nexus written by Duvivier, P. and published by CTA. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was carried out in the framework of collaboration with CTA) to undertake a rapid scan of policies, programmes, and interventions related to the agriculture-nutrition nexus. The Haitian agri-food system faces a variety of challenges, including strong pressure on farmland with small holdings of 0.62 ha on average, limited access to irrigation water, inputs and credit, and a lack of transportation, storage, and processing facilities. To improve food and nutrition security more investment in agriculture and nutrition services are needed. Farmers particularly need greater access to credits, agricultural insurance, agricultural extension and education, irrigation water, and inputs (seeds, pesticides, and fertilisers).
