Book The Agriculture of Cuba Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Agriculture of Cuba Classic Reprint written by P. G. Minneman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agriculture of Cuba As one of our nearest foreign neighbors, Cuba is located in a strategic position for the defense of the United States. It lies squarely across the entrance to the entire Gulf of Mexico, whose waters wash the shores of five of the Southern States, and it lies across the northern approach to the Caribbean Sea and the Panama Canal. Not only are good will and close cooperation between Cuba and the United States vital for defense, but Cuba is also the most important of all the Latin American countries from the standpoint of the volume of trade with the United States, particularly in agricultural products. During recent years, 1936 - 40, the total trade with Cuba averaged about 200 million dollars annually and constituted about one-fifth Of the total United States trade with all the 20 Latin American countries. The extent to which Cuba depends upon the United States is indicated by the fact that more than three-fourths of Cuba's total exports during recent years have been to the United States and, in turn, Cuba has obtained more than two-thirds of its imports from this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolution of Nicaragua and the United States The events of recent occurrence in Nicaragua that obliged me to come to Europe after having resigned the Presidency of the Republic, which I had held for sixteen years have given rise to various comments some of them unfavourable to myself. This fact renders it incumbent upon me to explain matters that the truth may be known in order that, the judgment past upon me by the public may be a just and fair one. Download or read book The Agricultural Situation in the Western Hemisphere written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation in the Western Hemisphere: Review of 1973 and Outlook for 1974 Agricultural output of the Western Hemisphere returned to near-record levels in 1973 and agricultural trade rose sharply because of higher world prices, larger exports, and from the need for imports to fill large food deficits in many Latin American countries. Changes in trade were reflected in us. Agricultural imports from the region, which increased from a 1972 value of billion to billion in 1973, and a rise in us. Agricultural exports from billion to billion. Canada's economic growth was almost 7 percent in 1973 compared with percent in 1972. Real gnp growth, estimated for 22 Latin. American countries, trended up advancing from a average of nearly 7 percent to more than percent. Growth exceeded the previous year's high rates in Brazil and Mexico and advanced sharply in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Venezuela, but was lower in Jamaica, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay, and Chile. Hemisphere foreign exchange reserves for December 1 973 were up more than 25 percent from the 1972 record of $16 billion, due to sharp build-ups in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and most Central American countries. Chile continued a sharp draw-down on reserves. Reserves fell off slightly in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Guyana. Advancing import costs added to inflation in most countries. Rates more than doubled in Canada, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, throughout the Caribbean, and in most Central American countries. The cost-of living rises continued with rates ranging from more than 50 percent in Argentina and Uruguay and to nearly 600 percent in Chile. Book The Socio Economics of Roman Storage

Download or read book The Socio Economics of Roman Storage written by Astrid Van Oyen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pre-industrial world, storage could make or break farmers and empires alike. How did it shape the Roman empire? The Socio-Economics of Roman Storage cuts across the scales of farmer and state to trace the practical and moral reverberations of storage from villas in Italy to silos in Gaul, and from houses in Pompeii to warehouses in Ostia. Following on from the material turn, an abstract notion of 'surplus' makes way for an emphasis on storage's material transformations (e.g. wine fermenting; grain degrading; assemblages forming), which actively shuffle social relations and economic possibilities, and are a sensitive indicator of changing mentalities. This archaeological study tackles key topics, including the moral resonance of agricultural storage; storage as both a shared and a contested concern during and after conquest; the geography of knowledge in domestic settings; the supply of the metropolis of Rome; and the question of how empires scale up. It will be of interest to scholars and students of Roman archaeology and history, as well as anthropologists who study the links between the scales of farmer and state.
