Book Agricultural Water Management Theories and Practices

Download or read book Agricultural Water Management Theories and Practices written by Keith Wheatley and published by Callisto Reference. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is an important input in agricultural production and contributes towards food security. Agricultural water management (AWM) aims to utilize water in such a way that the water requirement of crops and animals are met, while enhancing productivity and conserving natural resources. In addition to irrigation, AWM also involves soil, land and ecosystem conservation strategies, including fisheries management, drainage and watershed management along with technologies for lifting, storing and transferring water. Improvements in the management of water resources are based on the integrated management of nutrients, plants, water and soil. This can be achieved by optimization of irrigation scheduling and utilizing irrigation systems such as drip irrigation. This book contains some path-breaking studies on agricultural water management. It includes contributions of experts and scientists, which will provide innovative insights into this area of study.

Book Monitoring and Evaluating Agricultural Water Management Projects

Download or read book Monitoring and Evaluating Agricultural Water Management Projects written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing agricultural production is necessary to feed growing populations, raise the incomes of poor farmers, and boost national export revenues. But in poor, water-scarce areas of the world, it is impossible to raise production without first finding ways to get more out of limited supplies of water, the ultimate scarce resource. Increasing the efficiency with which water is used is one of the chief goals of agricultural water management (AWM). Continual improvements in the efficiency of water use depend on close monitoring and careful evaluation. But despite the scale and scope of AWM projects around the world, and their criticality to global efforts to reduce rural poverty and increase food security, the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of AWM projects need considerable improvement. The report stressed the need for greater emphasis on outcomes and impact measurement in project design. It also concluded that the effective implementation of projects was routinely compromised by inadequate supervision. M&E is strongest when there is a participatory quality to data collection and evaluation, so that stakeholders are invested in the project's successful implementation and aware of its successes and failures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various perspectives and challenges in agricultural water management have been discussed in detail in this book. Food security came up as a problem in the first decade of the 21st century, questioning the sustainability of humankind, which is certainly associated directly to the agricultural water management that has varied dimensions and needs integrative expertise in order to be dealt with. The aim of this book is to integrate the subject matter that deals with the modeling, auditing and assessment technique; and profitability, equity and irrigation water pricing in a single text. The book serves as a descriptive reference for professionals, students and researchers working on distinct aspects of agricultural water management. It is a comprehensive compilation of information regarding content revealing situations from distinct continents like USA, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. Several case studies have been elucidated in this book to provide the readers with a general scenario of the problems, challenges and perspectives on irrigation water usage.

Book Agricultural Water Storage in an Era of Climate Change Assessing Need and Effectiveness in Africa

Download or read book Agricultural Water Storage in an Era of Climate Change Assessing Need and Effectiveness in Africa written by Matthew McCartney and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By mitigating the vagaries of climate variability, agricultural water storage is widely anticipated to make a key contribution to climate change adaptation in Africa. However, if the planning of water storage is not improved, it is likely that many investments will fail to fully deliver intended benefits. This report describes the agricultural water storage continuum and some of the possible implications of climate change. A simple diagnostic tool which can be used to provide a rapid evaluation of the need and effectiveness of different water storage options, under existing and possible future climate conditions, is presented.

Book Agricultural Water Conservation

Download or read book Agricultural Water Conservation written by Aliasghar Montazar and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought and climate change have decreased water availability for agriculture in arid and semiarid regions, and therefore efficiency enhancements in irrigation water management aimed at conserving water are key to adjust to limits in water supply, as well as improve the profitability and sustainability of agricultural production. Agricultural water management tools and practices that reduce water uses with acceptable impacts on crop production are viable strategies required to cope with diminished water supplies and generate new sources of irrigation water. This Special Issue focuses on "Agricultural Water Conservation: Tools, Strategies, and Practices", which aims to bring together a collection of recent cutting-edge research and advancements in applied agricultural water conservation. It provides a broad overview focusing on irrigation decision support systems, drought management plans, deficit irrigation strategies, soil mulching, surface and subsurface drip irrigation, conservation tillage, and optimal water and fertilizer management practices.
