Book The Agricultural Exodus in the Philippines Are Wage Differentials Driving the Process

Download or read book The Agricultural Exodus in the Philippines Are Wage Differentials Driving the Process written by Mr. Eugenio M Cerutti and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-08-20 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lagging labor reallocations outside agriculture amid sustained low agricultural productivity have been a key feature in the Philippines over the past 15 years. An analysis of the labor adjustments in and out of agriculture shows that a variety of factors have influenced this process. We find that the widening of wage differentials with non-agricultural sectors, improvements in labor market efficiency, and better transport infrastructure are largely associated with growing outflows of labor from agriculture, whilst the lack of post-primary education and the presence of agricultural clusters hinder such outflows. In contrast to the traditional view that agricultural employment outflows are largely driven by productivity differences and wage differentials, our results emphasize the roles of education as well as transport infrastructure in facilitating labor reallocations from agriculture to non-agriculture.

Book Agricultural Policies in the Philippines

Download or read book Agricultural Policies in the Philippines written by Collectif and published by OECD. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyses Philippine agricultural policy. Agriculture provides 30% of total employment in the Philippines and represents 11% of its Gross Domestic Product. The Philippines has had notable recent overall economic success, yet improving agricultural performance remains challenging. Productivity growth lags behind other Southeast Asian countries, and a number of policy distortions hinder progress. With agricultural land resources also under pressure from frequent natural disasters, rising population and urbanisation, the report offers a series of recommendations to improve the sector’s performance and its ability to adapt to climate change.

As part of this process, governments are increasingly reaching out to taxpayers – current and future – to teach, communicate and assist them in order to foster a “culture of compliance” based on rights and responsibilities, in which citizens see paying taxes as an integral aspect of their relationship with their government.

Book Philippine Agricultural and Food Policies

Download or read book Philippine Agricultural and Food Policies written by Caesar Bucia Cororaton and published by International Food Policy Research Insitute. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite progress in recent years, poverty incidence remains very high in the Philippines, and poor households are highly vulnerable to the recent dramatic increases in food prices. In response to this problem, this research report investigates how Philippine policymakers can lower prices and reduce poverty. Using a dynamic-recursive computable general equilibrium model calibrated to a social accounting matrix of the Philippine economy, as well as other tools, the report simulates the effects of trade reform and increased rice productivity. The results indicate that diminished protection for major food items and investments in greater inbred-rice productivity have the potential to reduce prices and poverty in the Philippines. This report will be a valuable resource for policymakers, development specialists, and others trying to cope with the challenges of rising food prices.

Book excerpt: Rainforests are rapidly being cleared in the humid tropics to keep pace with food demands, economic needs, and population growth. The book includes: A practical discussion of 12 major land use options for boosting food production and enhancing local economies while protecting the natural resource base. Recommendations for developing technologies needed for sustainable agriculture. A strategy for changing policies that discourage conserving and managing natural resources and biodiversity. Detailed reports on agriculture and deforestation in seven tropical countries.
