Book Agriculture and a Changing Environment in Northeastern India

Download or read book Agriculture and a Changing Environment in Northeastern India written by Sumi Krishna and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s northeastern region, forged by a unique geological history and peopled by several waves of migration, is extraordinarily complex. Farming systems in the hills and the riverine plains are embedded in a heterogeneous environment, comprising forests, wetlands and fields, shaped over centuries by nature and people. Today, the environment and economy are undergoing rapid transformation, affecting peoples’ lives, livelihoods and methods of food production. The essays in this volume bring a multi-disciplinary perspective to critical aspects of the process of agricultural change, examine the gender dimensions of agriculture, and explore initiatives for sustainable livelihood and ecological conservation. Part I analyses the impact of policies and people’s own aspirations on the closely-intertwined ecology and economy of the region. Part II discusses the gender dynamics of farming, forestry and biodiversity in a socio-cultural context where women are primarily responsible for food production. Part III highlights some alternative farming interventions and community-based efforts for environmental conservation, sustainable resource management and improved livelihoods. This book will be useful to scholars and students of agriculture, economics, development, environment and gender studies, and to those involved in policy analysis, natural resource management and community organisation, as also general readers interested in India’s northeastern region.

Book Sustainable Development Goals in Northeast India

Download or read book Sustainable Development Goals in Northeast India written by Subhash Anand and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-19 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers themes related to the geosphere, biosphere, sociosphere and ecosphere dealing with changing geographical, environmental and socio-economic realities to plan a sustainable future for the northeast region (NER) of India. The NER consists of eight states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Sikkim—and they carry political, economic and social importance. The book integrates the past, present and future of geospheric attributes incorporating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to meet the demands for improving human wellbeing under diverse and challenging socio-economic, political and environmental conditions. The key SDGs, as in food and agriculture, health, education, water, energy and other overarching goals of the region, have yet to incorporate providing sustainable jobs and promoting equality and inclusive development, although there have been a few studies in that regard. The challenges to achieve SDGs in the NER are formidable compared to the rest of India. The NER has put a great deal of effort into achieving the SDGs, mainly in poverty (SDG-1), good health (SDG-3), education (SDG-4), gender (SDG-5), decent work (SDG-8) and reduced inequalities (SDG-10), similar to the rest of the country. However, the standard development indicators such as road length, access to health care, power consumption and other measures are far below the national average. A multi-pronged strategy has played a pivotal role in the region, but development strategy to attain the SDGs 2030 must be more inclusive in empowering people with maximising self-governance, considering the resources, needs and aspirations of the people. This book evaluates the performance of the SDGs and fills in the gaps. It includes case studies focusing on different SDGs using advanced cartographic, statistical and GIS techniques and methods. It also provides unique findings that serve as valuable resources for planners and policy-makers so that a sustainable future in Northeast India can be achieved.

Book High Value Plants

Download or read book High Value Plants written by Thangjam Anand Singh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-value crops are non-staple plants that give much higher return per unit area than staple crops. Diversification and investing towards high-value crops can potentially increase farm incomes, making them more attractive to new and small-scale agricultural farmers. This new volume explores the biotechnological applications for the unique high-value crops in response to the impending high-value agriculture revolution. The book discusses traditional knowledge, nutritional value, phytochemical activity, value addition quality, and postharvest management of some select unique high-value crops, including black ginger, bastard oleaster, Swertia chirayita, Garcinia, Parkia timoriana (or tree bean), king chili, Chenopodium (or goosefoot), sea buckthorn, broom grass, lichens, and others. High-Value Plants: Novel Insights and Biotechnological Advances provides important information for small-scale farmers and agricultural and horticultural professionals to consider diversifying into non-traditional, high-value, agricultural crops, an important area of potential income growth in rural areas.

Book Shifting Cultivation Policies

Download or read book Shifting Cultivation Policies written by Malcolm Cairns and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 1117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting cultivation supports around 200 million people in the Asia-Pacific region alone. It is often regarded as a primitive and inefficient form of agriculture that destroys forests, causes soil erosion and robs lowland areas of water. These misconceptions and their policy implications need to be challenged. Swidden farming could support carbon sequestration and conservation of land, biodiversity and cultural heritage. This comprehensive analysis of past and present policy highlights successes and failures and emphasizes the importance of getting it right for the future. This book is enhanced with supplementary resources. The addendum chapters can be found at: www.cabi.org/openresources/91797
