Book Agricultural Protection in Japan and Korea

Download or read book Agricultural Protection in Japan and Korea written by Leeann Hyunsoo Youn and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Japan and Korea have long protected their agricultural sectors, for many of the same reasons. However, trends in protectionism have diverged over time. Japan began a gradual policy liberalization in the 1970s, well before Korea did, but today, Japan maintains the more protective polices toward agriculture. Based on a literature review, this Master's Report answers the questions, Why does Japan have the more protective agricultural policy today? What makes sustaining protectionism more possible in Japan? Why did the Korean government move toward market-liberalization more aggressively than Japan did? The analysis shows that although there are many similarities across the two cases, political-institutional differences, such as parliamentary vs. presidential systems, and the different role as well as power of agricultural cooperatives (Nokyo in Japan vs. Nonghyup in Korea) go far in explaining the divergent agricultural policy liberalization trajectories. This Master's Report has also found that current research lacks a balanced comparison between two countries. Since most of the research has been done by Japan specialists, analysis on the Korean side remains weak. In particular, the role and characteristics of Korea's agricultural cooperatives are often misunderstood, due to a lack of understanding of Korean regionalism, and of the purposes of political mobilization in the countryside under authoritarian government in the 1970s and the 1980s. In addition, although comparing the political-institutional differences also offers an angle on understanding the divergent policy developments, it is important to emphasize that these two countries' constitutional structures are quite distinctive, compared to other systems (especially, the Japanese MMD electoral system experience, and the Korean military authoritarian regime). Thus, quite a bit of further research is necessary not only to understand changes in agricultural policy in these two countries, but also to build generalizable models that include other comparative cases.

Book Agriculture and Economic Development in East Asia

Download or read book Agriculture and Economic Development in East Asia written by Joanna Boestel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative study which describes and analyses the contribution of agriculture to the economies of East Asia. Until now, little attention has been paid to the agricultural sector which actually underpins industrial and commercial development. Recently, this sector has become the focus of increasingly bitter economic disputes, especially over protection and the use of import tariffs. A comparative framework is used, employing case studies from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea to highlight both the common characteristics of agriculture's role in East Asian development, and features particular to the political economy of agriculture in each country.

Book Macroeconomic Consequences of Farm Support Policies

Download or read book Macroeconomic Consequences of Farm Support Policies written by A. B. Stoeckel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural protectionism is a basic factor underlying the U.S. trade deficit, Third World debt, and global underemployment. Yet despite the seriousness of the problem and attention given to it by many researchers, little progress has been made in formulating and implementing policies to deal with it. The scholars and experts here assembled present for the first time a quantification and analysis of the impact upon the world economy of reduction or elimination of agricultural protectionism. They question why, give the magnitude of the problem, inferior policies endure despite the weight of evidence that they have failed. The answer they derive is that there is no general understanding of the true cost of the failure, and therefore it is necessary to initiate reform from outside agricultural circles.

Book Rice and Agricultural Policies in Japan

Download or read book Rice and Agricultural Policies in Japan written by Nicole L. Freiner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles Japan’s rice farmers who live in mainly rural areas in the west and south of Japan through original interviews conducted in Japanese. It argues that current agricultural policy as well as the tightening relationship between the US and Japan is a death sentence for a traditional lifestyle that is vital to Japan’s notion of national identity. The project covers recent agricultural policies, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement and its potential consequences on Japan’s food sovereignty and documents the effect of these policies on rice farmers. This volume is ideal for those interested in Japan’s agricultural policies and rural and traditional Japanese lifestyle.

Book Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in Japan Korea and Taiwan

Download or read book Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in Japan Korea and Taiwan written by Masayoshi Honma and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of agricultural policy in Northeast Asia over the past 50 years illustrates the dramatic changes that can occur in distortions to agricultural incentives faced by producers and consumers at different stages of economic development. In this study of Japan, the Republic of Korea (the southern part of the peninsula, hereafter referred to as Korea) and the island of Taiwan, China (hereafter referred to as Taiwan), the authors estimate the degree of distortions for key agricultural products as well as for the agricultural sector as a whole over a period when these economies transitioned from low- or middle- to high-income status the beginning of the so-called East Asian economic miracle of dramatic industrial development. The three economies in terms of the nature of their economies, including their resource endowments that determined the course of their modern economic growth and development. The evolution of agricultural policies in the three economies is then reviewed before discussing how to measure distortions to agricultural incentives using the methodology from Anderson et al. (2008), the focus of which is on nominal and relative rates of assistance. Implications of empirical findings for policy reforms in the three economies are discussed in the final section, where the authors also identify lessons for later-developing economies experiencing similar structural transformations in the course of their economic growth. Statistical observations are found to be consistent with the hypothesis that the success of rapid industrialization that advanced these economies to the middle-income stage resulted in declines in agriculture's comparative advantage associated with the growing income disparity between farmers and employees in non-agricultural sectors.
