Book excerpt: Head Trauma: Sonnets and Other Poems is Emmy-winning writer and producer Gary David Johnson's first book of poetry. Though he has published short stories in the horror-fantasy genre, poetry remains his passion. Until recently, however, creating the "perfect poem" seemed to be just out of his grasp. In 2005, Johnson realized that his poetic compositions were far from his former idealistic definition of the perfect poem. He wasn't even attempting to write a perfect poem; he was expounding, philosophizing, meditating, and reminiscing, but he wasn't writing what he had long ago defined as "poetry." Poetry requires discipline, and one of the definitions of discipline-in Johnson's dictionary, anyway-is the sonnet. With determination renewed, he set out to write one. After rewriting, polishing, and rewriting again, Johnson felt that he had at last found his true poetic voice. Johnson's poetry is immortalized in Head Trauma. His hope for you is that you enjoy it and maybe find the inspiration to discover your own "perfect poem" somewhere along the way.

Book excerpt: THE GREATEST ST0RY ever told is of course the Bible. The Bible describes the relationship between God and His people. As Christians we believe the Bible culminates in the person of Jesus Christ, the God Man. In Jesus we plainly see God at work among us. The Gospels tell us of Jesus birth and mighty works. Although the Scriptures contain all knowledge needed for our salvation, we read in the end of Johns Gospel that there are many other things to tell of Jesus and that the world may not be big enough to hold all that may be written. I for one certainly would be curious to have read some of these other tales of Our Lord. In Agnus Dei by Roger Schoenecker we are given that opportunity! Here we have the means to read in a consolidated form the writings of Maria Valtorta, The Poem of the Man God. This mystical work tells the untold stories of Jesus in five volumes. For many people, such a large piece of work would seem intimidating. Although I would encourage anyone who could to read these five volumes, for those who cannot, Rogers single volume puts succinctly the essence of Marias works. Agnus Dei has been a blessing to me in my own spiritual life, helping me to have a deeper understanding of the Scriptures in particular of the lives of the disciples and of our Blessed Mother Mary. I cannot tell how important that was for me. It has deepened my interest in the Gospels and in reading the five volume work of Maria Valtorta. I highly encourage all Christians to read this wonderful book. Fr. Steven A. Kunkel, Pastor, Christ the King Church, Mesa, Arizona>

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and ecumenical in scope, Poetry and Prayer offers theoretical discussion on the profound connection between poetic inspiration and prayer as well as reflection on the work of individual writers and the traditions within which they stand. An international range of established and new scholars in literary studies and theology offer unique contributions to the neglected study of poetry in relation to prayer. Part I addresses the relationship of prayer and poetry. Parts II and III consider these and related ideas from the point of view of their implementation in a range of different authors and traditions, offering case studies from, for example, the Bible, Dante, Shakespeare and Herbert, as well as twentieth-century poets such as Thomas Merton, Denise Levertov, W.H. Auden and R.S. Thomas.

Book The Poetry of Gottfried Benn

Download or read book The Poetry of Gottfried Benn written by Martin Travers and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of Gottfried Benn's poetry to appear in English. It covers the entirety of Benn's verse, from his early Morgue cycle (1912) and Expressionist poems through to the «anthropological» poetry of his middle period to the «postmodern» Phase II work after the Second World War. Against the background of the poet's theoretical writings, this study, drawing upon the classic texts of Benn scholarship, analyzes in detail the major themes of his verse and its distinctive idiom. In particular, this work focuses on Gottfried Benn's extended process of rhetorical self-fashioning, his use of classical iconography, color motifs and chiffres, his often confusing historical semantics, the seemingly self-constituting «absolute» poem, and the colloquial idiom of his late verse. The book also engages with the multiplicity of voices in Benn's work and their varied textual forms, the hermeneutically variable positions of speech that they articulate and the often contradictory notion of selfhood to which they give rise.

Book this need to dance this need to kneel

Download or read book this need to dance this need to kneel written by Michael P. Murphy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Denise Levertov (1923–97) was one of the most pioneering and skilled poets of her generation is beyond dispute. Her masterly use of language, innovative experimentations with organic form, and the political acuity disclosed by her activist poetry are well marked by critical communities. But it is also quite clear that the poems Levertov wrote in the last twenty years of her life, with their more explicit focus on theological themes and subjects, are among the best poems written on religious experience of any century, let alone the twentieth. The collection of essays gathered here shed vital light on this neglected aspect of Levertov studies so as to expand and enrich the scope of critical engagement. In a mixture of theoretical considerations and close readings, these essays provide valuable reflections about the complex relationship between poetry and belief and offer philosophically robust insights into different styles of poetic imagination. The abiding hope is to broaden the terrain for discussions in twenty-first-century theology, literary theory, poetics, and aesthetics—honoring immanence, exploring transcendence, and dwelling with integrity within the spaces between.
