Book excerpt: This study challenges the conventional view of Rétif de la Bretonne as a chronicler of eighteenth-century France and notorious exponent of 'la littérature galante', to provide both students and scholars with a fresh analysis focusing on two themes -- autobiography and utopianism -- which feature prominently in his writing. It suggests that each is the product of similar impulses, reflecting common polarities between public and private, self and others, past and future. In tracing Rétif's persistent but frustrated attempts to reconcile the conflicting elements of the world he inhabits -- rural and urban, old and new, stable and changing -- this volume analyses the failure of his utopian dream of a well-ordered and harmonious society. By exploring his absorption in the autobiographical project, and in particular Monsieur Nicolas ou le coeur humain dévoilé, it offers an interpretation of his work as a sustained reflection on selfhood and on the power of memory which enables Rétif to create, within the confines of the text, a utopian space where self and world are reconciled, and time and space no longer count.

Conservative critics of the time attributed the phenomenon of genius to masculinity and dismissed the work of female authors as “feminine literature.” Despite the efforts of leading thinkers, critics, and literary historians to erase women from the pages of literary history, Paliyenko shows how these female poets invigorated the debate about the origins of genius and garnered considerable recognition in their time for their creativity and bold aesthetic ideas. This fresh account of French women poets’ contributions to literature probes the history of their critical reception. Today, the Perraults are best remembered for their canonical fairy tales, such as "Cinderella" and "Puss in Boots," most often attributed to Charles Perrault, one of the brothers. While the writing of fairy tales may seem a frivolous enterprise, it was, in fact, linked to the cultural revolution of the seventeenth century, which paved the way for the scientific revolution, the rise of "national literatures," and the early Enlightenment. Rabinovitch argues that kinship networks played a crucial, yet unexamined, role in shaping the cultural and intellectual ferment of the day, which in turn shaped kinship and the social history of the family. Through skillful reconstruction of the Perraults’ careers and networks, Rabinovitch portrays the world of letters as a means of social mobility. He complicates our understanding of prominent institutions, such as the Academy of Sciences, Versailles, and the salons, as well as the very notions of authorship and court capitalism. The Perraults shows us that institutions were not simply rigid entities, embodying or defining intellectual or literary styles such as Cartesianism, empiricism, or the purity of the French language. Rather, they emerge as nodes that connect actors, intellectual projects, family strategies, and practices of writing.

Unfamiliarity and the sense of being alone, away from loved ones, plus the desire to go back home, constantly permeate your thinking. Knowing that it is not feasible is heartbreaking. It is the people you meet along the way that can unknowingly give you the strength to continue. Each new person you meet brings something to the table, each one like a piece of a puzzle that all together forms a beautiful picture; each one trusting that whatever they contribute is unique and important so things can go smoothly. This realization keeps you going, especially at work, performing tasks that you've never done before. My eyes are closed and my pen struggles to release memory to share the experience of climbing the stairs of life's lessons. If you are climbing, it is always good to look back without asking others to have pity on your struggle. Climbing the stairs of life requires courage to take the steps one by one with peace and love. The days go by and the silence is still there: we work, look, listen, meditate, and observe while there is time. Being an observer is like a lesson of wisdom with flexible rules, giving you the opportunity to become invisible while you learn and grow. I started my first job in the kitchen, carrying the food as well as washing dishes. Under the quiet gaze of my supervisor, while performing my duties, I observed and reflected about all the people around me - coworkers, supervisors, and the clients we were there to serve.
