Book excerpt: "Never in human history have there been so many people entering old age -- roughly one-third of whom will experience some form of neurodegeneration as they age. This seismic demographic shift will force us all to rethink how we live and deal with our aging population. Susan H. McFadden and John T. McFadden propose a radical reconstruction of our societal understanding of old age. Rather than categorize elders based on their respective cognitive consciousness, the McFaddens contend that the only humanistic, supportive, and realistic approach is to find new ways to honor and recognize the dignity, worth, and personhood of those journeying into dementia. Doing so, they argue, counters the common view of dementia as a personal tragedy shared only by close family members and replaces it with the understanding that we are all living with dementia as the baby boomers age, early screening becomes more common, and a cure remains elusive. The McFaddens' inclusive vision calls for social institutions, especially faith communities, to search out and build supportive, ongoing friendships that offer hospitality to all persons, regardless of cognitive status. Drawing on medicine, social science, philosophy, and religion to provide a broad perspective on aging, Aging Together offers a vision of relationships filled with love, joy, and hope in the face of a condition that all too often elicits anxiety, hopelessness, and despair"--Provided by publisher.

To provide examples of women between the age of 40 and, currently, 100, so that any woman can open this book and see themselves recognized.' Denise Boomkens launched the AndBloom project on Instagram in 2018, to create a 'happy place for women over 40' - a community where women can be themselves and where aging is celebrated instead of feared. Book Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Aging

Download or read book Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Aging written by Douglas C. Kimmel and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills a unique gap. Gerontologists seldom focus on special concerns of gay and lesbian older adults, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender aging organizations rarely address issues of aging, and the mental health field has demonstrated an ability to marginalize both aging and homosexuality. This book lays out the state of knowledge with respect to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender aging—physical health, sexuality, family ties, victimization, and legal and financial concerns. The references at the end of individual chapters and the bibliographical material at the end of the book provide an invaluable resource. For any gerontologist intrigued by the interplay of historical changes and individual aging, it is difficult to imagine a more powerful example than Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Aging. Evolution of attitudes toward homosexuality, the emergence of HIV/AIDS, and legal protections beginning to be afforded to same-sex relationships are all part of the changing world that has shaped and been shaped by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals who are now old.

Book excerpt: Aging: How Aging Works, How We Reverse Aging, and Prospects for Curing Aging Diseases explains the process of aging beyond mere entropy, exposing it as a complicated and dynamic process that undercuts maintenance and permits age-related disease. With a deeper understanding of the aging process, intervention becomes both easy to understand and clinically feasible. With a solid academic approach, this proposed book builds upon the substantial work published over the past 20 years, citing the newest data, up-to-date models based upon that data, and the implications for improved clinical intervention, including recent developments in gene and cell therapy. Coverage of age-related diseases includes neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, bone and joint, immune system, renal, pulmonary, and skin aging. Future directions of the field focus on interventions, including a summary of previous attempts to intervene in aging and age-related disease, the status of current research, and proposed biotech interventions, as well as their potential obstacles, risks, and benefits. This is the perfect reference for scientists, clinicians, and researchers interested in the translational research opportunities such as drug discovery, pharmacogenetics, and experimental therapeutics, not only summarizing where the field stands, but giving a clear and cogent view of where clinical medicine is going in the next decade. Provides a sophisticated, accurate, and clear explanation of aging Gives a clear explanation of the fundamental role of cell aging in age-related disease Offers a unified model for the role of epigenetic and telomere changes in cell aging Outlines effective approaches to intervention in the fundamental aging process Introduces upcoming interventions intended to both cure and prevent age-related diseases

Book Summary Report on Aging of Asphalt aggregate Systems

Download or read book Summary Report on Aging of Asphalt aggregate Systems written by Chris A. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report on the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of the aging of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Compared to research on the aging of asphalt cement, there has been little research on the aging of asphalt mixtures. Binder studies are considered as well as mixture sutdies, the relationship between laboratory aging tests and field performance, and the relationship between chemical composition and field performance. Recommendations are made for aging procedures which show promise for laboratory investigation. Test methods to evaluate aging are also considered. It is noted that extended heating procedures show the most promise for short-term aging and pressure oxidation and/or extended heating the most promise for long-term aging.

Download or read book Biology of Aging written by Roger B. McDonald and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Aging, Second Edition presents the biological principles that have led to a new understanding of the causes of aging and describes how these basic principles help one to understand the human experience of biological aging, longevity, and age-related disease. Intended for undergraduate biology students, it describes how the rate of biological aging is measured; explores the mechanisms underlying cellular aging; discusses the genetic pathways that affect longevity in various organisms; outlines the normal age-related changes and the functional decline that occurs in physiological systems over the lifespan; and considers the implications of modulating the rate of aging and longevity. The book also includes end-of-chapter discussion questions to help students assess their knowledge of the material. Roger McDonald received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Dr. McDonald’s research focused on mechanisms of cellular aging and the interaction between nutrition and aging. His research addressed two key topics in the field: the relationship between dietary restriction and lifespan, and the effect of aging on circadian rhythms and hypothalamic regulation.
