Book Aggregation and Dispersal Behavior of the Common Bed Bug Cimex Lectularius L and a Method of Detection Using Canines

Download or read book Aggregation and Dispersal Behavior of the Common Bed Bug Cimex Lectularius L and a Method of Detection Using Canines written by Margaret Pfiester and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female bed bugs dispersed from the aggregations, possibly to avoid multiple traumatic inseminations. The common bed bug is difficult to visually locate because of the many possible harborages where aggregations can occur. Detector dogs were expected to be useful for locating bed bugs because they use olfaction rather than vision. Dogs were trained to detect the common bed bug (as few as one adult male or female) and viable bed bug eggs (5, collected 5-6 days after feeding) using a modified food and verbal reward system. Their efficacy was tested with bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs placed in vented PVC containers. Dogs were able to discriminate bed bugs from Camponotus floridanus Buckley, Blatella germanica L., and Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar, with a 97.5% positive indication rate (correct indication of bed bugs when present) and 0% false positives (incorrect indication of bed bugs when not present). Dogs were also able to discriminate live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs from dead bed bugs, cast skins, and feces, with a 95% positive indication rate and a 3% false positive rate on bed bug feces. In a controlled experiment in hotel rooms, dogs were 98% accurate in locating live bed bugs. A pseudoscent prepared from pentane extraction of bed bugs was recognized by trained dogs as bed bug scent (100% indication). The pseudoscent could be used to facilitate detector dog training and quality assurance programs. If trained properly, dogs can be used effectively to locate live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs.

Book excerpt: Bed bugs. Few words strike such fear in the minds of travelers. In cities around the world, lurking beneath the plush blankets of otherwise pristine-looking hotel beds are tiny bloodthirsty beasts just waiting for weary wanderers to surrender to a vulnerable slumber. Though bed bugs today have infested the globe, the common bed bug is not a new pest at all. Indeed, as Brooke Borel reveals in this unusual history, this most-reviled species may date back over 250,000 years, wreaking havoc on our collective psyche while even inspiring art, literature, and music—in addition to vexatious red welts. In Infested, Borel introduces readers to the biological and cultural histories of these amazingly adaptive insects, and the myriad ways in which humans have responded to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bed bug colonies—even by feeding them with their own blood (ouch!)—and to the stages of musicals performed in honor of the pests. She explores the history of bed bugs and their apparent disappearance in the 1950s after the introduction of DDT, charting how current infestations have flourished in direct response to human chemical use as well as the ease of global travel. She also introduces us to the economics of bed bug infestations, from hotels to homes to office buildings, and the expansive industry that has arisen to combat them. Hiding during the day in the nooks and seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, wallpaper, or any clutter around a bed, bed bugs are thriving and eager for their next victim. By providing fascinating details on bed bug science and behavior as well as a captivating look into the lives of those devoted to researching or eradicating them, Infested is sure to inspire at least a nibble of respect for these tenacious creatures—while also ensuring that you will peek beneath the sheets with prickly apprehension.

Book Bed Bug cimex Lectularius Defecation Behavior Following a Blood Meal

Download or read book Bed Bug cimex Lectularius Defecation Behavior Following a Blood Meal written by Courtney L. Darrington and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant barrier to successfully rearing bed bugs in the laboratory is their typical unwillingness to feed from an artificial system, which perhaps stems from the absence of host cues. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major host signal detected by bed bugs, but there are no studies documenting its effect on feeding behavior. We compared bed bug feeding success on an artificial feeding system when exposed to a high flow rate of CO2 (2700 mL/min) or no CO2 (control). We tested bed bugs from four populations: Harlan; Shalamar, a recently collected (2014) field population; and Cuyahoga and Marcia, both collected in 2010. Our study documented an increased feeding response of bed bugs from four populations when CO2 was present at a high flow rate rather than absent. Within populations, Cuyahoga and Marcia had the greatest feeding response, with Cuyahoga significantly so. Exposing feeding bed bugs to a high flow rate of CO2 may be a useful solution for rearing bed bug populations that feed poorly from an artificial system.

Book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects

Download or read book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

Book excerpt: Parasitology: A Conceptual Approach focuses on the conceptual basis of parasitology, with the goal of providing students with an enriched view of parasites and their biology. Concentrating on concepts will enable readers to gain a broader perspective that will increase their ability to think critically about all kinds of parasitic associations. The interfaces between the study of parasitism and prominent biological disciplines such as biodiversity, immunology, ecology, evolution, conservation biology, and disease control are highlighted. Studying individual parasites is an essential part of parasitology so Parasitology: A Conceptual Approach contains an appendix which provides a concise overview of the biology of important human and veterinary parasites. End-of-chapter questions are provided, as is an instructor manual.

Book Public Health Significance of Urban Pests

Download or read book Public Health Significance of Urban Pests written by Xavier Bonnefoy and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed important changes in ecology, climate and human behaviour that favoured the development of urban pests. Most alarmingly, urban planners now face the dramatic expansion of urban sprawl, in which city suburbs are growing into the natural habitats of ticks, rodents and other pests. Also, many city managers now erroneously assume that pest-borne diseases are relics of the past. All these changes make timely a new analysis of the direct and indirect effects of present-day urban pests on health. Such an analysis should lead to the development of strategies to manage them and reduce the risk of exposure. To this end, WHO invited international experts in various fields - pests, pest-related diseases and pest management - to provide evidence on which to base policies. These experts identified the public health risk posed by various pests and appropriate measures to prevent and control them. This book presents their conclusions and formulates policy options for all levels of decision-making to manage pests and pest-related diseases in the future. [Ed.]
