Book Real time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction

Download or read book Real time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction written by Robert Otto Rasmussen and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R06E-RR-1: Real-Time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction explores real-time smoothness measuring technologies for concrete paving. For the purposes of the report, real-time smoothness refers to measuring and evaluating the concrete pavement surface profile during construction along the paving train while the concrete surface is still wet. The report also includes draft suggested specifications and guidelines related to the use of technologies that allow paving crews to measure smoothness in real time. The results of Renewal Project R06E will be incorporated into an electronic repository for practitioners, known as the NDToolbox, which will provide information regarding recommended technologies for the detection of a particular deterioration. The NDToolbox is in the process of being created by SHRP 2 Renewal Project R06A, which has released SHRP 2 Report S2-R06A-RR-1: Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration that identifies nondestructive testing technologies for detecting and characterizing common forms of deterioration in concrete bridge decks. Renewal Project R06E, which produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R06E-RR-1, is one of seven follow-on projects to SHRP Renewal Project R06 that produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R06-RW: A Plan for Developing High-Speed, Nondestructive Testing Procedures for Both Design Evaluation and Construction Inspection, which examines existing and emerging nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and their current state of implementation to satisfy the NDE needs for highway renewal."--Publisher description.

Book Rapid Test Methods for Asphalt Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete

Download or read book Rapid Test Methods for Asphalt Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete written by Woodrow J. Halstead and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to materials and construction engineers, and others interested in the use of rapid test methods for asphalt concrete and portland cement concrete. Information is provided on the various test methods in use for process control and acceptance of these materials, as well as methods under development. State experience with these procedures, as well as discussions from the literature, are presented. There is growing use of rapid test methods for asphalt concrete and portland cement concrete in highway construction. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of rapid test methods for these materials. Experience with short-cut and rapid test procedures for process control and acceptance is summarized, and a general description of the methods, their advantages and disadvantages, and their time and labor requirements are discussed based on a review of the literature and a survey of the states.

Book Recycling of Portland Cement Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Recycling of Portland Cement Concrete Pavements written by William A. Yrjanson and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, and others interested in economical methods for recontstructing portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. Information is provided on the processes and procedures used by a number of states in using PCC pavement as aggregate in reconstructed concrete pavement. Since 1975 a number of state highway agencies have reconstructed concrete pavements using the old PCC as aggregate in the new pavement. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the processes used on various projects in several states, giving details of construction procedures, as well as test results on various properties of the recycled aggregates and the resultant concrete.

Book Investigation of Use of Slag Aggregates and Slag Cements in Concrete Pavements to Reduce the Maintenance Cost

This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS), the by-product of the pig iron making process, is often used as coarse aggregate in portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements, especially in the areas located in the vicinity of the iron mills. The utilization of this by-product as an aggregate in concrete offers environmental and economic benefits in the form of elimination of waste, decrease in the disposal costs, and reduction in need for mining of the natural materials. However, concerns exist with relation of the influence of these aggregates on the long-term durability of pavement concretes, especially at locations exposed to freezing and thawing environment. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of using the ACBFS aggregate (slag aggregate) as a replacement for natural aggregates on the properties of pavement concrete designed to meet the standard specifications of the Indiana Department of Transportation. A total of eight different concrete mixtures, four containing air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS) as coarse aggregate and additional four containing natural dolomite, were used in this study. The mechanical and durability properties of these concretes were assessed by conducting series of tests prior and after the exposure to FT and WD cycles. In addition, changes in the overall physical appearance of the test specimens were also documented to aid in the evaluation of the effects of given exposure conditions on the deterioration process of concretes. In the case of a plain concrete, the analysis of the data collected during the study (i.e. the observed loss of strength, reduction in the dynamic modulus of elasticity, and physical changes in the appearance of the specimens) indicated that the calcium chloride (CaCl2) deicer caused the most severe distress, followed by the magnesium chloride (MgCl2). Specimens exposed to sodium chloride (NaCl) experienced the least damage and performed comparably to those exposed to distilled water (DST).The use of either Class C fly ash, slag cement or the combination of both as part of the binder was found to greatly increase the resistance of concrete to damaging effects of deicers.
