This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) is circumpolar in distribution and is reported to occur along the Labrador coast south to the northwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence (Leim and Scott, 1966). The Arctic cod prefers low temperatures and its distribution is often associated with ice (Hognestad,1968)"--Introduction.

Book Age Growth and Movement Dynamics of Arctic Cod Boreogadus Saida in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas

Download or read book Age Growth and Movement Dynamics of Arctic Cod Boreogadus Saida in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas written by Alyssa Frothingham and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) dominates fish assemblages in the Arctic and provides a valuable food source to upper trophic level predators. Little is known about several important facets of its biology and ecology in the Pacific Arctic, including in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The physical connectivity of these two biologically and hydrologically unique seas provides an excellent opportunity to explore differences in Arctic Cod life history characteristics such as age, growth, and movement dynamics in these two adjacent areas. To establish a current benchmark of Arctic Cod life history and movement characteristics for the Pacific Arctic, Arctic Cod otoliths collected from 2009 to 2014 during twelve research cruises conducted throughout the Chukchi and Beaufort seas were used to estimate growth and age structure for this species from the two regions. Ages of Arctic Cod ranged from 0 to 5 years with significant overlap in size at age. Growth of Arctic Cod collected in the southern Chukchi Sea and eastern Beaufort Sea regions were similar, suggesting freshwater-influenced regions may enhance growth compared to other areas. Additionally, microchemistry of age-0 Arctic Cod otoliths was analyzed to determine potential differences in elemental signatures between the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, and to infer movement between them. Otolith trace element concentrations were distinct between the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, indicating populations of Arctic Cod from the Chukchi and Beaufort seas can be differentiated based on otolith elemental signatures. Furthermore, elemental signatures from the cores of otoliths were significantly different from those from the edges in both seas suggesting early life history movement. As the Pacific Arctic faces warming sea temperatures and sea ice reduction, predicting a species-level adaptation to a changing environment is nearly impossible without establishing a benchmark for future comparison. This research will provide valuable insight into Arctic Cod across a broad portion of its distribution.

Book Arctic Climate Impact Assessment Scientific Report

Download or read book Arctic Climate Impact Assessment Scientific Report written by Arctic Climate Impact Assessment and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-07 with total page 1053 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social, and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels. Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was prepared by an international team of over 300 scientists, experts, and knowledgeable members of indigenous communities. The report has been thoroughly researched, is fully referenced, and provides the first comprehensive evaluation of arctic climate change, changes in ultraviolet radiation and their impacts for the region and for the world. It is illustrated in full color throughout. The results provided the scientific foundations for the ACIA synthesis report - Impacts of a Warming Arctic - published by Cambridge University Press in 2004.

Book excerpt: The joint management of Norway and Russia in the Barents Sea has been successful in conserving the living marine resources and is a major factor contributing to the present rich fisheries in the area. The basis for this conservation success is scientific research, which, to a large extent, has been conducted through a long-lasting co-operation between Russian and Norwegian scientists that has expanded greatly over the past half century. Based on joint Russian-Norwegian authorships, this monumental book celebrates the scientific co-operation by reflecting on the historical development and the scientific methods applied, and by offering a comprehensive presentation of the vast knowledge of the Barents Sea resources and ecosystem obtained through these co-operative efforts.
