Book Biological Invasions and Its Management in China

Download or read book Biological Invasions and Its Management in China written by Fanghao Wan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses invasive-species problems in agriculture, forests and aquatic ecosystems, highlighting the invasive mechanisms and management of the selected invasive species. Biological invasion has become a serious global ecological and economic problem that deserves particular attention from both government officials and scientists. This volume focuses on three key scientific areas: 1) population establishment and spreading mechanisms of the selected invasive species; 2) ecology adaptation, population growth, expansion and evolution of invasive species; and 3) impact of bio-invasion on the ecosystem structure and function at community and ecosystem levels. The presented research will result in techniques for better management of invasive species.

Book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia

Download or read book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia written by Jim Cullen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological control of weeds has been practised for over 100 years and Australia has been a leader in this weed management technique. The classical example of control of prickly pears in Australia by the cactus moth Cactoblastis cactorum, which was imported from the Americas, helped to set the future for biocontrol of weeds in many countries. Since then there have been many projects using Classical Biological Control to manage numerous weed species, many of which have been successful. Importantly, there have been no serious negative non-target impacts – the technique, when practised as it is in Australia, is safe and environmentally friendly. Economic assessments have shown that biocontrol of weeds in Australia has provided exceedingly high benefit-to-cost ratios. This book reviews biological control of weeds in Australia to 2011, covering over 90 weed species and a multitude of biological control agents and potential agents. Each chapter has been written by practising biological control of weeds researchers and provides details of the weed, the history of its biological control, exploration for agents, potential agents studied and agents released and the outcomes of those releases. Many weeds were successfully controlled, some were not, many projects are still underway, some have just begun, however all are reported in detail in this book. Biological Control of Weeds in Australia will provide invaluable information for biological control researchers in Australia and elsewhere. Agents used in Australia could be of immense value to other countries that suffer from the same weeds as Australia. The studies reported here provide direction to future research and provide examples and knowledge for researchers and students.

Book Weed Control Methods for River Basin Management

Download or read book Weed Control Methods for River Basin Management written by E.O. Gangstad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic plants continue to create problems associated with navigation, flood control, agriculture, irrigation and drainage, values of lands, conservation of wildlife and fisheries, and water resource supply. While much research is being done to find more effective and economic control measures, there is now a great need to apply known facts to achieve a measure of control by the means available. It is the purpose of this volume to provide a scientifically documented treatise of the known facts as they apply to the control of aquatic weeds in river basins and their allied waterways with particular emphasis on alligator weed and water hyacinth.

Book Release of Potentially Cold Tolerant Alligatorweed Flea Beetles Agasicles Hygrophila Selman and Vogt Into the United States from Argentina

Download or read book Release of Potentially Cold Tolerant Alligatorweed Flea Beetles Agasicles Hygrophila Selman and Vogt Into the United States from Argentina written by Gary R. Buckingham and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alligatorweed flea beetles (Agasicles hydrophila) were collected from the Southernmost, or coldest, part of their range in Argentina and were shipped to the United States. They were reared in quarantine, and specimens from the F1 generation were examined for entomopathogens, none of which were found. Releases of adults and eggs were made at Gainesville, Fla., and at several locations in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama. It was hoped that these beetles would be more cold tolerant than those used in prior releases. Follow-up investigations at the release sites 1 year after release showed overwintering success on only 1 of 10 sites. However, factors other than cold appeared to have eliminated three of the colonies released, so it would be premature to make a determination of whether or not this test population of Agasicles is more cold tolerant than the populations previously released.
