Book Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban

Download or read book Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban written by Eric H. Arnett and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than three decades of on-off negotiations, a CTB treaty was signed in 1996. This book describes how the CTB will affect nuclear programmes and decision-making in the nuclear weapon states, the threshold states and the non-nuclear weapon states of proliferation concern. While some states will maintain their nuclear weapon arsenals and options under the CTB - and some weapon modernization may be undertaken - the CTB will foreclose a number of technologies and will probably be signed and ratified. Further the CTB will codify a norm against nuclear modernization and strengthen the norm against nuclear proliferation in a way that reinforces other efforts to restrict nuclear activities. The book examines the significance of treaty provisions that may be intended to accommodate existing nuclear weapon stockpiles or options and how these provisions may function as modernization or proliferation loopholes. It concludes with a review of practical steps that can be taken - both unilaterally and multilaterally - to further strengthen these norms and reinforce the CTB regime.

Book Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control in South Asia After the Test Ban

Download or read book Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control in South Asia After the Test Ban written by Eric H. Arnett and published by SIPRI Research Reports. This book was released on 1998 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the nuclear weapon states continue to reduce their nuclear arsenals and international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons are reinvigorated, South Asia remains a unique region almost entirely unencumbered by nuclear arms control. Despite the recent popularity of the notion that nuclear deterrence is stabilizing the Indo-Pakistani conflict, there is good reason to believe that the risks of war and the use of nuclear weapons are not fully appreciated. Nevertheless, the prospects for negotiated measures to improve the situation are not good because of the domestic politics on both sides. Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control in South Asia after the Test Ban sheds new light on the risks of the current stand-off, the hidden costs of the nuclear options, and the domestic sources of the region's inertia, bringing together Indian, Pakistani and Chinese perspectives.

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-02

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Malignant written by Rebecca Dresser and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You have cancer." Words no one wants to hear, but heard by millions every year. Millions more hear the equally shattering news that a loved one has cancer. Both are life-changing messages. For the people writing this book, cancer was not only a personal crisis, it was also an education. Experts on medical ethics, personal experience with cancer showed them how little they understood of the real world of serious illness. Despite years of teaching and writing about treatment decision-making and patient autonomy, they were unprepared for many of the problems they faced. They discovered that the rights and wrongs of cancer care were more complicated than they had anticipated. Ethics outside the hospital walls took on unexpected significance as they discovered the astonishing generosity, and the unintentional cruelty, that cancer provokes in others. Cancer was a test of personal character, too, as patients accustomed to control became dependent on others and caregivers shouldered unfamiliar and difficult responsibilities. In chapters on cancer diagnosis, treatment choices, and research participation, the authors examine medical ethics from the personal point of view. In chapters on family caregiving, cancer interactions, and cancer support groups, they consider ethics outside the medical setting. In chapters on mortality and survivorship, they reflect on cancers personal moral teachings. Cancer is an unavoidable feature of modern life. Readers will come away with a deeper understanding of what it is like to have cancer, better equipped to respond to cancer in their own lives and the lives of others. The book also offers insights to doctors and nurses seeking to improve cancer treatment and to medical ethicists seeking to make their work more relevant to patients and caregivers.
