Book News of Baltimore

Download or read book News of Baltimore written by Linda Steiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the media approached long-standing and long-simmering issues of race, class, violence, and social responsibility in Baltimore during the demonstrations, violence, and public debate in the spring of 2015. Contributors take Baltimore to be an important place, symbol, and marker, though the issues are certainly not unique to Baltimore: they have crucial implications for contemporary journalism in the U.S. These events prompt several questions: How well did journalism do, in Baltimore, nearby and nationally, in explaining the endemic issues besetting Baltimore? What might have been done differently? What is the responsibility of journalists to anticipate and cover these problems? How should they cover social problems in urban areas? What do the answers to such questions suggest about how journalists should in future cover such problems?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As evidenced in interviews included in this volume, many African American filmmakers consider themselves artists first, their ethnicity being only part of what influences their work. This is the first book by an African American on contemporary African American filmmakers. Here directors and producers speak for themselves, posing challenges to current thinking in the field. Special emphasis is given to the filmmakers' productions and their experiences. Essays on historic figures reveal the rich history of the African American contribution to cinema. From Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams to Neema Barnett and the team of George Jackson and Doug McHenry, this revealing reference work will enlighten scholars, students, and film buffs. As early as 1899, African Americans were involved in the filmmaking industry. Oscar Micheaux took directing, writing, and producing to a higher level with the release of his first film in 1918; by 1948 he had made more than forty films. Currently, by international world cinema standards, the African American tradition rivals cinema from anywhere in the world, but these filmmakers face a quandary: whether to make films through the Hollywood system or follow an independent vision. This book presents a cross-section of filmmakers from each camp and also focuses on those who work in both arenas.

Book Five Days

Download or read book Five Days written by Wes Moore and published by One World. This book was released on 2020 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kaleidoscopic account of five days in the life of a city on the edge, told through seven characters on the frontlines of the uprising that overtook Baltimore and riveted the world, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Other Wes Moore. When Freddie Gray was arrested for possessing an "illegal knife" in April 2015, he was, by eyewitness accounts that video evidence later confirmed, treated "roughly" as police loaded him into a vehicle. By the end of his trip in the police van, Gray was in a coma he would never recover from. In the wake of a long history of police abuse in Baltimore, this killing felt like a final straw--it led to a week of protests and then five days described alternately as a riot or an uprising that set the entire city on edge, and caught the nation's attention. Wes Moore is one of Baltimore's most famous sons--a Rhodes Scholar, bestselling author, decorated combat veteran, White House fellow, and current President of the Robin Hood Foundation. While attending Gray's funeral, he saw every strata of the city come together: grieving mothers; members of the city's wealthy elite; activists; and the long-suffering citizens of Baltimore--all looking to comfort each other, but also looking for answers. Knowing that when they left the church, these factions would spread out to their own corners, but that the answers they were all looking for could only be found in the city as a whole, Moore--along with Pulitzer-winning coauthor Erica Green--tells the story of the Baltimore uprising. Through both his own observations, and through the eyes of other Baltimoreans: Partee, a conflicted black captain of the Baltimore Police Department; Jenny, a young white public defender who's drawn into the violent center of the uprising herself; Tawanda, a young black woman who'd spent a lonely year protesting the killing of her own brother by police; and John DeAngelo, scion of the city's most powerful family and owner of the Baltimore Orioles, who has to make choices of conscience he'd never before confronted. Each shifting point of view contributes to an engrossing, cacophonous account of one of the most consequential moments in our recent history--but also an essential cri de coeur about the deeper causes of the violence and the small seeds of hope planted in its aftermath.

Book Afromations Declare and Decree Over Your Life

Download or read book Afromations Declare and Decree Over Your Life written by Kimberly Stratton and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is time to declare and decree daily positivity over yourself and your life! I am not sure about you but many individuals (family, friends - or so I thought they were -, those whom I thought loved me or that I loved; those in ministry, supervisors, coworkers, leaders, etc.) have spoken negativity over my life (and come to find out, some not so good words were spoken over my life before I was born - still in the womb). Numerous hurtful words, actions and expressions that to this day I sit back and wonder if the person(s) really understood the negative and harmful impact those words would have on me and on my life (mentally, emotionally and ultimately physically from eating my feelings). Some knew the long-term effects their poisonous words would have. Others, maybe not so much. At some point in life, I realized that I had two options: (1) I could allow their damaging and toxic statements to either destroy me or (2) use those venomous untruths to help raise me to a place where I needed to be elevated. I chose option two. It was at that place I hit the reset button and began to take back my life by declaring and decreeing positive affirmations. With God's Word, His help and His love, I began to blot out, overtalk and over speak over my own life. It took a few years but once in that place, I was untouchable because of who God said I am. I was unattainable because God's Word gave me such assurances. I was and still am inaccessible to such slanderous tomfoolery. I turned those positive affirmations into Afromations and walk now knowing my lineage and whose I am with my head held high, no looking back and walking into the calling the Lord has spoken over my life. With these Afromations, may you do the same and encourage someone else along the way. These Afromations are for everyone to help encourage, uplift, inspire, reassure, elevate and catapult you
