La décennie présente s'achève avec l'effondrement des systèmes répressifs ainsi que des économies de rente et l'apparition de nouvelles stratégies populaires de résistance et d'innovation. Car pour survivre dans une Afrique "conjoncturée", écartée des échanges mondiaux, il faut penser et réaliser des alternatives viables avec tout le génie dont chaque homme dispose et qui a été libéré soudain par la déliquescence de l'autoritarisme. L'on assiste ainsi à "l'irruption des pauvres" sur la scène africaine. Les dynamiques "de vie" à l'œuvre dans les villes comme dans les villages sont davantage qu'une réponse à la "culture de mort" des pouvoirs agonisants. Mais au-delà de ces nouvelles formes d'avenir, il est évident que l'argent et son culte doivent être contrôlés par un Etat protecteur des faibles cette fois. Comment répartir le nouveau pouvoir et les richesses sans retomber dans l'ornière mortelle ? La démocratisation est un pas mais s'imposent tout autant des contre-pouvoirs populaires forts. Il s'agit là d'une revanche de l'homme africain sur le sort qui lui a été fait et qu'il s'est aussi fait depuis des siècles. On est donc loin de "l'afro-pessimisme" tout comme de "l'afro-optimisme" d'ailleurs en vigueur en Occident ces derniers temps.

Defined as the phenomena of religious mixture, syncretism carries a range of connotations. In Christian theology, use of syncretism shifted from a compliment during the Reformation to an outright insult in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The term has a history of being used as a neutral descriptor, a pejorative marker, and even a celebration of indigenous agency. Its differing uses indicate the challenges of interpreting religious mixture, challenges which today relate primarily to race and revelation. Despite its pervasiveness across religious traditions, syncretism is poorly understood and often misconceived. Ross Kane argues that the history of syncretism's use accentuates wider interpretive problems, drawing attention to attempts by Christian theologians to protect the category of divine revelation from perceived human interference. Kane shows how the fields of religious studies and theology have approached syncretism with a racialized imagination still suffering the legacies of European colonialism. Syncretism and Christian Tradition examines how the concept of race figures into dominant religious traditions associated with imperialism, and reveals how syncretism can act a vital means of the Holy Spirit's continuing revelation of Jesus.
