Book From Bad Policy to Chaos in Somalia

Download or read book From Bad Policy to Chaos in Somalia written by Jamil Mubarak and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-06-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the economic policies of Somalia since 1970 is empirical in nature, employing political and economic analysis, economic theory, and econometric techniques, and argues that the governmental economic policy, policy responses to crises, and exogenous shocks have been bad for the long-term economic growth of the country. Despite significant foreign financed public investment, economic growth has been weak and real per capita income has declined. The intensifying economic crises contributed to the rapid deterioration of the political situation that led to the collapse of the Somali state in 1991. Since 1991, chaos and more destruction has followed as warlords scrambled for power, resulting in the resource base of the economy being eroded further and the country being reduced to warring clans.

Book Debt Development and Equity in Africa

Download or read book Debt Development and Equity in Africa written by Karamo N. M. Sonko and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1994 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the impact of the African debt crisis on poverty. The author studies the relationship between debt and socio-economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, Sonko analyzes the impact of debt-induced expenditure adjustments, including budgetary retrenchment in an African economy undergoing structural adjustment. Sustainable, self-reliant development, debt relief, and the redesign of structural adjustment programs to make them less controversial and more effective in Africa are required. The overall analysis is conducted with a view to what the author refers to as the "state of global interconnectedness," implying the need for global economic policy coordination and assistance in finding solutions to Africa's development problems. Book Economic Development of Caricom

Download or read book Economic Development of Caricom written by Winston H. Griffith and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been suggested that, if CARICOM nations wish to accelerate their development, they should embrace laissez-faire economic policies. However, laissez-faire economic policies have reinforced the very economic and social structures that have contributed to their low level of development; furthermore, laissez-faire economic policies ignore social attitudes that can greatly influence a nation’s development. Moreover, low-skilled labor-intensive production processes, which once propelled growth in CARICOM nations, will no longer perform a similar role because production processes are becoming more and more knowledge-skills intensive, and nations wishing to attract foreign manufacturing investment or high-tech services may not be able to do so without an adequate pool of the necessary knowledge skills. CARICOM nations must therefore try to accumulate a pool of knowledge skills that can help their economies become internationally competitive.

Book South Asia and Africa After Independence

Download or read book South Asia and Africa After Independence written by Bernard Waites and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-colonial South Asia and Africa invite comparison: along with their political boundaries, they inherited from colonial regimes administrative languages, a cluster of sovereign state institutions and modern economic nuclei. When they became independent, South Asian and African states were - for all their diversity - thrust into a common position in the international system, and embarked on a common history as 'emergent', 'non-aligned', 'developing nations'. This is the first book to offer a single-volume comparative history of postcolonial South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa in the first generation since independence. South Asia and Africa After Independence draws together the political and economic history of these two regions, assessing the colonial impact, establishing breaks and continuities, and highlighting their diversity and interplay. Waites sets out a framework for analysing the first generation of post-colonial history, offering an interpretation of 'post-colonialism' as a historical phenomenon, and provocatively challenging us to re-think this term in relation to South Asian and African history. This book is an important reference for the study of global, world, African and South Asian history.
