Book African Americans on U S Currency and Numismatic Materials Coins and Medals

Download or read book African Americans on U S Currency and Numismatic Materials Coins and Medals written by Sherrod Gresham and published by . This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for the purpose of informing the reader about African Ameri¬cans on U.S. Currency and Numismatic Materials: Coins and Medals. The definition of Numismatics is the scientific analysis and study of money and the uses to which people have put money throughout history. When coin collectors use the word numismatics, though, they generally mean the study of coins in particular. A wider and more correct definition includes the study and collecting of all money-related items such as banknotes, tokens, medals, bullion rounds, etc.As any devoted numismatist will attest, our coins, medals and U.S. paper money are tied to the American story, from the earliest colonial times to the birth of the United States, through the great gold and silver debates dominating American politics for much of the 19th century, and during generations of war and peace, prosperity and depression. This book looks at African Americans' contribution to American history on U.S. cur-rency, coins and medals. The depiction of slaves on confederate currency, and Southern States currency is a message of how the labor of enslaved Africans helped build the foundation of the United States' economy. Blanche K. Bruce and Judson W .Lyons signed U.S. currency during reconstruction.Bishop William T. Vernon and James C. Napier signed U.S. currency during the Jim Crow era. Isaac Hathaway was chosen as the designer of the Booker T. Washington silver half dollar coin and the George Washington Carver silver half dollar coin thus becoming the first African-American to design a U.S. coin. The Honorable Azie Taylor Morton was the first African American U.S. Treasurer. She was appointed by President Jimmy Carter and signed U.S. currency from 1977-1981. This book fo¬cuses on stories of these people of color whom we are not aware of in American his¬tory. Their stories are told and shown here so we never forget the importance of their lives and their contribution to history.I hope this book will encourage and inspire the reader to collect the rich African American heritage available through U.S. currency, coins and medals.WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR HERITAGE... YOU KNOW HOW GREAT YOU ARE...

Book The Magic of Things

Download or read book The Magic of Things written by Jochen Sander and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2008 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This excellent book is a painfully honest account of successive unwinnable wars. It is the text book Mr. Obama and others will need if Afghanistan is ever to be left to find its own peace and prosperity.” —Jon Snow, Channel 4 News (UK) Jonathan Steele, an award-winning journalist and commentator, has covered the country since his first visit there as a reporter in 1981. He tracked the Soviet occupation and the communist regime of Najibullah, which held the Western-backed resistance at bay for three years after the Soviets left. He covered the arrival of the Taliban to power in Kabul in 1996, and their retreat from Kandahar under the weight of U.S. bombing in 2001. Most recently Steele has reported from the epicenter of the Taliban resurgence in Helmand. Ghosts of Afghanistan turns a spotlight on the numerous myths about Afghanistan that have bedeviled foreign policy-makers and driven them to repeat earlier mistakes. Steele has conducted numerous interviews with ordinary Afghans, two of the country's Communist presidents, senior Soviet occupation officials, as well as Taliban leaders, Western diplomats, NATO advisers, and United Nations negotiators. Comparing the challenges facing the Obama administration as it seeks to find an exit strategy with those the Kremlin faced in the 1980s, Steele cautions that military victory will elude the West just as it eluded the Kremlin. Showing how and why Soviet efforts to negotiate an end to the war came to nothing, he explains how negotiations today could put a stop to the tragedies of civil war and foreign intervention that have afflicted Afghanistan for three decades.

Book Numismatic Archaeology of North America

Download or read book Numismatic Archaeology of North America written by Marjorie H. Akin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numismatic Archaeology of North America is the first book to provide an archaeological overview of the coins and tokens found in a wide range of North American archaeological sites. It begins with a comprehensive and well-illustrated review of the various coins and tokens that circulated in North America with descriptions of the uses for, and human behavior associated with, each type. The book contains practical sections on standardized nomenclature, photographing, cleaning, and curating coins, and discusses the impacts of looting and of working with collectors. This is an important tool for archaeologists working with coins. For numismatists and collectors, it explains the importance of archaeological context for complete analysis.
