Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on interviews and field research, the authors explore the sets of ideas Arab tribespeople from Ras Al-Khaimah had about tribe and community; social and economic networks, and jural contracts for livelihoods and profits; their uses of their environments; the moral relations of credit, debt and labour; ruling; economic and political transformations; and ideas of regional history where conflicts were regarded as disputes over sets of ideas, and informal accounts of tribal and local histories. Their lively descriptions and explanations of life before oil portrayed tribal societies whose relationships were moral rather than political and were between jurally equal persons. All lived from their own resources; 'wealth' was material self-sufficiency; 'riches' the richness of social relationships. Political arenas were decentralised and underpinned by common cultural and moral values. Published sources give a wider context to these ideas and events which show the great complexity and differing perspectives of 'life before oil' in the Gulf.

Book Cold Metal

Download or read book Cold Metal written by John Michael Corpuz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed with four academic degrees, including an MBA, Tito worked in banking and never worried about money. His comfortable lifestyle included traveling around the world, from the Florida Keys to Tokyo. Ultimately, though, he trusted the wrong people when he decided to start his own business, despite warning signs. Several bounced checks later, Tito was arrested in a street roundup for failing to produce identification, beginning an odyssey he never could have imagined, in a place where the stench alone nearly overpowered him. Enter Dubai’s Muraqqabat and Al Awir jails, where people of every race, language, and ethnicity—Chinese, Lebanese, Pakistani, Filipino, African, Syrian, Indian—are confined for crimes ranging from indecent exposure to financial misdeeds to homicide. Meet Joey, who loved to impersonate action stars from old movies; Neil, terrified and on the edge of a breakdown; Joseph, who reputedly earned nearly $10,000 a month while incarcerated; Khalid, the swaggering bully who tearfully recounted what happened to the woman whose love changed his life. Tito puts human faces on stereotypes of Christian and Muslim, gay and straight, Arab and Chinese. Stories of loyalty, small kindnesses, and selflessness unfold along with those of deceit and intimidation, and it is here that Tito learns about pure love, true friendship, and his ability to survive. Cold Metal opens the door to a world that is sometimes sad, sometimes harsh, sometimes heartwarming, and always fascinating—a world most of us will never see firsthand, but will never forget.

Book Fundamentals Of Practical Aberration Theory Fundamental Knowledge And Technics For Optical Designers

Download or read book Fundamentals Of Practical Aberration Theory Fundamental Knowledge And Technics For Optical Designers written by Yoshiya Matsui and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-06-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, although most of the optical design processes are automated with the aid of computer software, the fundamental question of how we can generate the initial optical configuration such that it can be dealt with by the computer remains. The answer can only be found in applying techniques based on the aberration theory. Previous works have explored this subject matter. None, however, has covered the full extent of first deriving the aberration theory and then illustrating with the help of various kinds of actual examples how it can be applied effectively to practical design problems. This book is significant in its attempt to put theory into practice for the first time to provide new insight and knowledge to its readers.

Book Astrology through History

Download or read book Astrology through History written by William E. Burns and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphabetically arranged entries cover the history of astrology from ancient Mesopotamia to the 21st century. In addition to surveying the Western tradition, the book explores Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. The field of astrology is growing rapidly, as historians recognize its centrality to the intellectual life of the past and sociologists and anthropologists treat its importance in a number of modern cultures. Despite the historical and cultural significance of the subject, most reference works on astrology focus on instructional techniques and are written by astrologers with little or no interest in the history of the topic. This book instead offers an objective treatment of astrology across world history from ancient Mesopotamia to the present. The book provides alphabetically arranged entries by expert contributors writing on such topics as horoscopes, court astrologers, Renaissance astrology, and comets. While it considers the Western tradition, it also treats Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. In doing so, it explores the role of astrology in shaping science, literature, religion, art, and other defining cultural traditions. Sidebars offer excerpts from various historical texts, while entries provide suggestions for further reading.
