Book excerpt: A Season Like No Other: AFL 2020 explores how the AFL navigated a season that changed day-by-day for fans, for the clubs, and for the players and coaches. The 2020 AFL Season was like no other in the game's 162-year history. As coronavirus struck down Australia during round one, in March 2020, the AFL was forced to take unprecedented steps to keep its season alive. The season was postponed at the end of round one, a round without crowds, and resumed on 11 June, a hiatus of 84 days. During that period speculation was rife as to whether the season could proceed, and where. 'Hubs' became the key word, and the fixture was rebuilt to allow for 17 matches -- with clubs playing each other once. By July, as COVID-19 ravaged the country and economy, teams were quarantined, under strict protocols, in NSW and QLD. By the end of July, the WA teams and SA teams were back in their home states, playing before reduced crowds, but all VIC teams had relocated to NSW, QLD, and WA. In one 14-day period, Collingwood was fixtured to play four games. This is the story of how the AFL, the clubs, the players, the coaches, the administration, and the fans coped with history in the making.

Book excerpt: In 1996, the 113-year-old Fitzroy Football Club played its final game in the AFL. Financial pressures brought about by the steady professionalisation of the AFL respected neither the worth of the club's history nor the passion of its fans. Out of time and money, on 4 July 1996 Fitzroy was forced into a merger with the Brisbane Bears - creating the League's first, and thus far only, merged club. MERGER tells the story of that fateful year, from boardroom drama and intrigue to the wind and mud of the Whitten Oval, capturing the profound tragedy of Fitzroy's doomed plight. 'The demise of Fitzroy is a deep wound rather than a scar. A tear in the fabric of the game that will never truly repair.' - from the Foreword by Gerard Whateley

Book Financial Management in the Sport Industry

Download or read book Financial Management in the Sport Industry written by Matthew T. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in a fully revised and updated third edition, this essential textbook introduces the fundamentals of sport finance and sound financial management in the sport industry. It is still the only textbook to explain every aspect of finance from the perspective of the sport management practitioner, explaining key concepts and showing how to apply them in practice in the context of sport. The text begins by covering finance basics and the tools and techniques of financial quantification, using industry examples to apply the principles of financial management to sport. It then goes further, to show how financial management works specifically in the sport industry. Discussions include interpreting financial statements, debt and equity financing, capital budgeting, facility financing, economic impact, risk and return, time value of money, and more. The final part of the book examines financial management in four sectors of the industry: public sector sport, collegiate athletics, professional sport, and international sport. It provides an in-depth analysis of the mechanics of financial management within each of these sport sectors. Useful features, such as sidebars, concept checks, practice problems, case analysis and case questions will help students engage more deeply with financial techniques and encourage problem-solving skills. This new edition includes a completely new chapter on international sport, reflecting the globalized nature of the modern sport industry, as well expanded coverage of current issues such as digital media finance, recent legal cases affecting collegiate sport, and the central importance of collective bargaining. Financial Management in the Sport Industry is an essential textbook for any undergraduate or postgraduate course in sport finance, and an invaluable supplement to any course in sport business or sport management. It is also an important reference for all sport management practitioners looking to improve their understanding of finance. The book is accompanied by updated and expanded ancillary materials, including an instructor’s manual, PowerPoint slides, and an image bank.

Book The NFL s Pivotal Years

Download or read book The NFL s Pivotal Years written by Brad Schultz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have been among the most challenging in NFL history, culminating in the 2020-21 coronavirus and social justice issues. Yet a complete understanding of where the NFL is today begins with a five-year period that was the most transformative for the league. From 1957 to 1962, the NFL saw: the advent of unionization, with a landmark Supreme Court decision; the legendary 1958 title game, the first to go into sudden death overtime; a challenge from the American Football League that would have important consequences for decades; the introduction of computerization and statistical analysis; the first steps towards globalization; and the hiring of legends Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, who both contributed to the league's growing mythology. This book describes in detail the key events that helped shape the modern NFL, and why this period was so momentous to the league and its fans.
