Book Afghanistan Iran and Pakistan

Download or read book Afghanistan Iran and Pakistan written by Human Rights Watch (Organization) and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2002 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Human Rights Watch report, "Closed Door Policy: Afghan Refugees in Pakistan and Iran," cautions against a hasty repatriation of Afghan refugees while conditions in Afghanistan remain unstable. Human Rights Watch interviewed many refugees, including members of various ethnic groups, and women and girls, who fear continuing human rights abuses inside Afghanistan. The decades long Afghan refugee emergency did not end with the fall of the Taliban. There remain three and a half million refugees in Pakistan and Iran, the vast majority of whom arrived before the current armed conflict. Although one hundred forty thousand Afghans went home from Pakistan and Iran in the past six weeks, fifty thousand new refugees fled Afghanistan to Pakistan during the same time period. Refugees interviewed by Human Rights Watch in Pakistan described the human toll caused by that government's treatment of the refugee population: With borders closed, most refugees had to resort to dangerous and unofficial routes into Pakistan. Refugees were beaten at unofficial checkpoints when they could not afford to pay extortionate bribes. At official crossing points, families were beaten back, or languished in squalor without food, water or latrines-hoping to be let in. Once inside Pakistan, refugees were harassed and imprisoned because they lacked identity documents. They also endured beatings by Pakistani police when queuing for food in camps."--Publisher website.

Book Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

Download or read book Afghan Refugees in Pakistan written by Hanne Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the second part of a report on the conditions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan after the emergency relief phase. Its goal is to find answers to four questions concerning the refugee situation in the two sample frontier villages of Barawal and Orakzai: a) where do refugees obtain their food and income; b) what social and economic links do they have with the community; c) does the provision of free food and relief deter refugees from engaging in productive economic activities; and d) what are the best ways of identifying and assisting vulnerable groups? The report is divided into seven sections: Introduction; The Refugee Intake and Food Distribution Experience; The Refugee Communities; Refugee Interaction with Local People; Summary Findings; Conclusions; and Photographic Documentation. The following recommendations conclude the report: 1) refugee-initiated income-generating projects which are appropriate to Pakistan's development policies should receive international and local support; 2) newly-arrived refugees should be given a hundred per cent relief while aid to those settled for more than two years should be phased out by gradual monthly reductions; 3) careful monitoring of the phasing out process must ensure that, at each step, refugee income is adequate; and 4) refugees should be well-informed about reasons for, and the modalities of, the phasing out with a trial period at the outset.

Book Sustaining Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

Download or read book Sustaining Afghan Refugees in Pakistan written by Hanne Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food aid distribution to the Afghan refugees in Pakistan is one of the world's largest relief operations. This report assesses the food situation and related aspects in the refugee settlements, with particular reference to the sources of food, links between the refugees and local communities, the division of labour between male and female refugees, income-generating projects, and vulnerable groups. The report is divided into four main sections: 1) background (history, former lifestyles and the situation in Pakistan); 2) general conditions in the refugee villages (including village organization); 3) the food situation in the villages; and 4) related social aspects (social organization, relations with aid administrators and with local communities). The author concludes that there is a vulnerable group (10-15%) which does not receive adequate food supplies. She found that the refugee women tended to suffer from depression and that tensions were increasing between the refugees and local communities. Her recommendations include: a) improved management and monitoring of the food distribution system; b) introduction of income-generating projects; c) search for alternative forms of energy; and d) more careful needs assessment of both food and non-food items.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Council on Foreign Relations sponsors Independent Task Forces to assess issues of current and critical importance to U.S. foreign policy and provide policymakers with concrete judgments and recommendations. Diverse in backgrounds and perspectives, Task Force members aim to reach a meaningful consensus on policy through private and non-partisan deliberations. Once launched, Task Forces are independent of CFR and solely responsible for the content of their reports. Task Force members are asked to join a consensus signifying that they endorse "the general policy thrust and judgments reached by the group, though not necessarily every finding and recommendation." Each Task Force member also has the option of putting forward an additional or a dissenting view. Members' affiliations are listed for identification purposes only and do not imply institutional endorsement. Task Force observers participate in discussions, but are not asked to join the consensus. --Book Jacket.

Book Body of Victim Body of Warrior

Download or read book Body of Victim Body of Warrior written by Cabeiri deBergh Robinson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fascinating look at the creation of contemporary Muslim jihadists. Basing the book on her long-term fieldwork in the disputed borderlands between Pakistan and India, Cabeiri deBergh Robinson tells the stories of people whose lives and families have been shaped by a long history of political conflict. Interweaving historical and ethnographic evidence, Robinson explains how refuge-seeking has become a socially and politically debased practice in the Kashmir region and why this devaluation has turned refugee men into potential militants. She reveals the fraught social processes by which individuals and families produce and maintain a modern jihad, and she shows how Muslim refugees have forged an Islamic notion of rights—a hybrid of global political ideals that adopts the language of human rights and humanitarianism as a means to rethink refugees’ positions in transnational communities. Jihad is no longer seen as a collective fight for the sovereignty of the Islamic polity, but instead as a personal struggle to establish the security of Muslim bodies against political violence, torture, and rape. Robinson describes how this new understanding has contributed to the popularization of jihad in the Kashmir region, decentered religious institutions as regulators of jihad in practice, and turned the families of refugee youths into the ultimate mediators of entrance into militant organizations. This provocative book challenges the idea that extremism in modern Muslim societies is the natural by-product of a clash of civilizations, of a universal Islamist ideology, or of fundamentalist conversion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century has seen people displaced on an unprecedented scale and has brought concerns about refugees into sharp focus. There are forty million refugees in the world—1 in 130 inhabitants of this planet. In this first interdisciplinary study of the issue, fifteen scholars from diverse fields focus on the worldwide disruption of "trust" as a sentiment, a concept, and an experience. Contributors provide a rich array of essays that maintain a delicate balance between providing specific details of the refugee experience and exploring corresponding theories of trust and mistrust. Their subjects range widely across the globe, and include Palestinians, Cambodians, Tamils, and Mayan Indians of Guatemala. By examining what individuals experience when removed from their own culture, these essays reflect on individual identity and culture as a whole.

Book US Pakistan Relationship

Download or read book US Pakistan Relationship written by A.Z. Hilali and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilali provides an excellent study into the US-Pakistan partnership under the Reagan administration. The book explores the causes of Pakistan's involvement in the Afghanistan war and the United States' support to prevent Soviet adventurism. It shows that Pakistan was the principal channel through which assistance was provided to Afghan freedom fighters; it also provided access to its military bases to use against the Soviet Union. The study looks at the consequences of the war on Pakistan and explains how it became enmeshed within its domestic politics. Furthermore, it evaluates the role of Pakistan as a key partner in the global coalition against terrorism and discusses how General Pervez Musharraf brought about Pakistan's development towards a progressive, moderate and democratic society. Ideally suited to courses on foreign policy.
