Book Aerodynamic Drag Mechanisms of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehicles

Download or read book Aerodynamic Drag Mechanisms of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehicles written by Gino Sovran and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings contain the papers and oral discussions presented at the Symposium on AERODYNAMIC DRAG MECHANISMS of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehides held at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, on September 27 and 28, 1976. This international, invitational Symposium was the twentieth in an annual series, each one having been in a different technical discipline. The Symposia provide a forum for areas of science and technology that are of timely interest to the Research Laboratories as weIl as the technical community at large, and in which personnel of the Laboratories are actively involved. The Symposia furnish an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and current knowledge between participating research specialists from educational, industrial arid governmental institutions and serve to stimulate future research activity. The present world-wide energy situation makes it highly desirable to reduce the force required to move road vehicles through the atmosphere. A significant amount of the total energy consumed for transportation is expended in overcoming the aerodynamic resistance to motion of these vehicles. Reductions in this aerodynamic drag can therefore have a large impact on ground transportation energy requirements. Although aerodynamic development work on road vehides has been performed for many years, it has not been widely reported or accompanied by much basic research.

Book Aerodynamic Drag Reduction of Bluff Bodies

Download or read book Aerodynamic Drag Reduction of Bluff Bodies written by Gargeshwari Suryanarayana and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamics of bluff bodies has gained the attention of aerodynamicists all over the world in recent times, primarily because of importance given to drag reduction by the automobile industry. Since pressure drag accounts for bulk of the drag of bluff bodies, any technique to manipulate and control the overall pressure field around such bodies to achieve base pressure rise causes reduction of drag. Interestingly, not many works are found on 3- dimensional bluff bodies such as spheres. Currently, interest in spherical airships is growing, triggered by the tourism industry. However, the high drag and management of highly unsteady wake of spheres are some of the aerodynamic issues that need to be addressed. This book offers the concept of passive natural ventilation as a potential solution. Natural ventilation occurs when the stagnation zone and the base are interconnected through an internal duct, which causes a jet flow through the center. Based on several years of experimental research, it is shown that natural ventilation of a sphere leads to substantial drag reduction and reduced wake unsteadiness at high Reynolds numbers.

Book A Method for the Reduction of Aerodynamic Drag of Road Vehicles

Download or read book A Method for the Reduction of Aerodynamic Drag of Road Vehicles written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is proposed for the reduction of the aerodynamic drag of bluff bodies, particularly for application to road transport vehicles. This technique consists of installation of panels on the forward surface of the vehicle facing the airstream. With the help of road tests, it was demonstrated that the attachment of proposed panels can reduce aerodynamic drag of road vehicles and result in significant fuel cost savings and conservation of energy resources.
